There's no shortage of rumors swirling about the iPhone 5 right now, but we've got some enlightening information (and an image) that might help paint a better picture of what Apple's next play in the mobile market could be. While the current crop of chatter on the internet suggests the iPhone 5 will be little more than a spec bump to the iPhone 4, that's not the story we've been hearing at all. In fact, the device could look something a little more like the image above -- an image which is our rendering based on information from a variety of sources.
Note: Yes, folks, that's our mockup -- not a real device.
For starters -- as I reported back in January on Engadget -- the design of the phone is set to radically change ("a completely redesigned handset"). Our sources say the new model (or at least one of the new designs in testing) looks "more like the iPod touch than the iPhone 4." The phone will be thinner than the iPhone 4, and may have a "teardrop" shape which goes from thick to thin (something along the lines of the MacBook Air profile).
In a sketch supplied to us by a source (on which the image above is based), the home button is doing double duty as a gesture area; this falls in line with testing we've seen for gestures on the iPad, and our sources say that gestures are definitely coming in a future version of iOS. The home button will likely be enlarged, but not scrapped altogether. Furthermore, we're hearing that the screen on the device will occupy the entire (or near to it) front of the phone, meaning almost no bezel. Our source says the company is doing very "interesting things" with bonded glass technology, and has been exploring designs where the earpiece and sensors are somehow behind the screen itself, making for a device where the display is actually edge-to-edge. Regardless, the sketch we've seen suggests the screen will go up to 3.7-inches while keeping the current resolution, and at that size, pixel density goes from 326 to 312 (a drop of 13ppi). That means that Apple can still tout Retina Display technology (the claim is that anything above 300ppi means the pixels aren't distinguishable at 12 inches). Rumors have been suggesting that the size would bump up to 4 inches, but at that size with the current resolution, pixel density drops to 288, making it harder for Apple to use the RD branding.
While the art we've seen shows some form of inductive or touch charging, our sources can't confirm whether or not Apple's working on its own version of cable-free juicing. There's also a "swipe area" shown in the drawing which appears to be on the bottom and / or top of the device -- that could very well be an NFC point, but that's pure speculation on our part.
Another interesting note about this phone: this week the tech community has been abuzz over comments Verizon's CFO Fran Shammo made in reference to the next Apple phone. While answering an analyst question over changes in the company's margins, Shammo stated:
"The fluctuation, I believe, will come when a new device from Apple is launched, whenever that may be, and that we will be, on the first time, on equal footing with our competitors on a new phone hitting the market, which will also be a global device."
This information falls perfectly in line with news I outlined in that same Engadget post, meaning that this next phone could be the first to really utilize Qualcomm's dual GSM / CDMA Gobi chipset (the Verizon iPhone 4 has the MDM6600 inside, but does not work in both modes). That would be a smart play for Apple, since the company has just made huge inroads into the Chinese market, and a world phone that did double duty would mean a simultaneous (or nearly simultaneous) release.
Now, keep in mind that this info isn't fact -- we're getting lots of threads from lots of places and trying to make sense of the noise. The versions of devices our sources are seeing could be design prototypes and not production-ready phones. Still, there are strong indications that Apple will surprise a public that's expecting a bump more along the lines of the 3G to 3GS -- and this is some insight into where those designs might be headed. We're working on a couple of other intriguing pieces of information concerning future Apple products... so stay tuned for much, much more.
Update: One quick note worth pointing out -- the taper is probably a little exaggerated in the mockup (that's thanks to our so-so Photoshopping skills), and we're not saying the backing will be metal, like the iPod touch. That's simply the basis for this image.
Update 2: A friend of the site, Corey Daniels (@CDugD) mocked up a more Unibody-style version of the phone (above) -- this might give you a better impression of what a production model could look like.

Nice, but I think it’s too thin!

Thin is good. Makes me wonder how the f they get the battery in there though. Looks like a gesture area on the home key now :D

I agree – I love thin and hate bulky things in my pockets. But there is a line where it just doesn’t feel comfortable in your hand.

That’s the problem I have with my wife’s iPod Touch. It looks really nice, but so hard to use without a case. If it had a soft touch back, that’d probably make it easier to use with one hand.

Is it just me, or are those mock-ups F-U-G-L-Y? I mean it, seriously.
The design of the iPhone 4 was like meh IMO; this is just garbage.
These mockups are so bad, they make the Nokia N8 look good. (I use an E7 for work. Other phone: Nexus S)

It’s far too thin for my liking, I like to feel like there’s something in my hand of some sort of substance. (twss)
Having said this, it isn’t beyond Apple’s capability or inclination to do this, they love changing the form fact slightly each year (a cynic would say that it is because they sell more docks that way).

I agree that the initial rendering was a bit extreme, but the second one seems a bit more practical, though I’d still have concerns regarding the ‘top heavy’ look, and wonder how it the angled back would work when used flat on a surface in landscape mode?

I think this is the iPhone Air I have been hoping for!
From the picture mockup it checks the boxes I have been expecting (slimmer, smaller bezel) – this will not be the iPhone 5, as I don’t see how a phone of this thickness would allow for a 8mp camera and a battery thick enough to power LTE phone, or a fully clocked A5 SOC.
iPhone Air (slimmer, slower, 3G only): $399 (8GB) – free on contract & $499 (16GB) – $99 on contract
iPhone 5 (faster, 4G/LTE, HD camera): $599 (32GB) – $199 on contract & $699 (64GB) – $299 on contract
I think this combo will be VERY attractive, and also allow people to purchase the iPhone Air unsubsidised for a reasonable price (good for gift giving season – no contract to sort out)

That’s not a bad point. They’d probably end up dropping the last-gen iPhone unless they want to go for a 3 device set-up (which I doubt, but who knows). Although I also don’t know if they want to make the Air devices to seem “less advanced” than the other devices, the MBA has an SSD to give it an edge over the MBP (beyond the size).

I see the Air brand (for MacBooks) as a trade off in specs (slower processor, less storage & connectivity, no optical) for the desirable form factor (very slim & light).
I think the imorovement from the SSD speed in the current macbook Air is actually an unintended but fortunate side effect from the move from a HD to the cheaper form of flash based storage. it’s probably why it’s selling so well.
Anyway, I can see the initial premise of less specs but more style being applied to the iPhone line, replacing the ugly “here’s last years model for $100 cheaper” sales model apple currently employs (they stopped doing this for the entry level iPod touch thank god)

Agreed. Remember reading that they wanted a cheaper version to better compete in the low end market.
I thought they could repackage the iPhone 4 internals (should be cheaper considering they’re an year old) in a metal body similar to the iPod nano 4G. And colors! That would rule!

I’ll admit is a very attractive prospect but I disagree with you. This would be very hard to achieve, primarily because it would lead to fragmentation. I know that term gets thrown around way too often but in this case it is valid. If you had a lower spec device then it wont be able to run the same apps that the better one can. This means that you suddenly have confused developers. Do they make an app for the high end device and lose a large portion of the potential market, do you make a worse app so you can have it on both devices, does apple make two app stores?
This is full of problems and could actually reverse innovation and app development that apple depends so heavily on. They like the idea of the iPhone being able to be a high end gaming device and won’t want to change this. My opinion is definitly one model like before, we may see a price reduction of a hundred dollars though if they manage to get their iTunes cloud service working that would allow them to reduce memory and then reduce cost. That is a major if though, I think they are happy with their current market share and pricing strategy. They can’t keep up with demand currently why reduce the price of something that is working?

Really not that big of a deal – definitely not enough to ask such a dumb question.

And on the iPhone 4 you actually have sides to grip onto. This TIMN mock does not, so you’d just be holding onto the thin tapered edges when it’s up to your ear. That’s just asking to be dropped, IMO.
It’s not so much a problem with the lack of bezel as it is the lack of a side to hold onto.

I can see what you mean, but even with large hands, I don’t have a problem with the iPod Touch which is much thinner than the iPhone 4…here’s a few Google images I found to sort of describe how I hold it, and why it probably won’t be a problem for many people:
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/iphone4main.jpg (but the thumb is usually hovering over the screen).

One point I’d like to mention: if you’ve seen the iPod touch 5 leak, the only visual difference is a capacitive home button instead of a physical button.
I think if apple is going to make the lower half of the device touch sensitive they’d probably have a capacitive home button instead of a gouge. That would also make it “more like the iPod touch”.
Also, the iPhone 2G was borderless and it was ugly, I really hope apple doesn’t go back to that style again.
Just makes sense to me.

We can’t really know that either way surely? Apple didn’t comment on it did they? And there have been rumours beyond that photo (fake or otherwise). Although I don’t personally think that capacitive is the way to go on the home button.

Posted on Apr 22, 2011 | 4:39 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
I think so, mainly because the home button side is longer than the earpiece side meaning your right thumb would have to reach farther (Or the other way around for the other landscape mode.)
The slant on the back might be a little strange, but I think if the top and bottom bezels were even it wouldn’t be too bad.

My guess is its a design concept that won’t make it that far. Apple is not one to change up a good thing when competition is hot. They have a great design now and I can’t see them ditching it for a risky concept design. They might make small changes, but they will likely work on new designs for years to come. But again, Apple doesn’t like huge changes like this. Seems too much to fast.

True but we have been hearing they are planning a big iOS change. I’m guessing this is going to be mac back to iOS to conteract last years event. For example I think we are going to see the dashboard widgets on that blank screen of space when you swipe to the left on the home screen on iPad. If they are gonna make this big and groundbreaking to try and flumux competitors acting like they skipped a cycle would be perfect. Let’s face it apple don’t have a great design right now, it is symbolic of bad reception whether that is true or not it has become a symbol of it, a hardware redesign would change this. It’s not slim anymore compared to competition and it feels thicker then it is due to the form factor. It’s not risky, the iPod touch has had this design and pulled it off successfully for ages.
Another important point, most of the rumours we

i dunno, the iPod touch has it’s issues related to it’s thin form factor. the volume buttons are nearly impossible to use with one hand, and the dock connector is quite a pain to connect.

Do you have a 4th generation iPod touch? If so, are you missing fingers?
I just checked my email, scrolled through four pages of apps, opened the video app and started Sherlock Holmes, adjusted the volume with the buttons on the top, then flipped the iPod around and adjusted the volume with the buttons on the bottom. All with one hand.
If that’s “nearly impossible”, I think I deserve some kind of award.
Posted on Apr 22, 2011 | 8:05 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
Perhaps he was pushing it with “nearly impossible” but I can’t disagree that the volume buttons, by being on the backwards slope of the bevel, are more difficult to use than the 3rd gen iPod touch (especially in portrait mode).
Perhaps you don’t have an issue with it, but the difficulty is not an individual user’s problem, a lot of people have complained about this. I’ll say, with my case (Incase Slider) giving the device a bit more to grip, I find it a lot more comfortable than using it caseless.

The “fine German camera” look of the 4 has been mesmerizing me, while I save up to upgrade with my contract. This hideous bath tub look MUST GO. Am I going to have to settle for the current performance to avoid another Ive idiocy if I wait for the 5 ? Maybe I’ll wait and see what the choices really turn out to be.
Already Apple has locked me out of the iMac market due to the stupid “Rear-view iMac” glossy POS screen.
I had hoped the iPad2 would look like an iPhone4: they bath-tubbed it :(

Agreed, if the final design is similar to the mockup, I’d be disappointed. Too chrome-y, and the teardop shape seems like an aesthetic mistake. But it wouldn’t shock me if they went that way.
Remember that Apple has made plenty of ugly products over the last 10 years. But as soon as Steve Jobs gets on stage and says “we care about design” and “we put so much into the design” suddenly everyone immediately falls all over it, for fear of seeming like they can’t recognize good design if they don’t love it too.
There were a lot of people who hated the iPhone 4 design when it was leaked, but it got universal praise when the PR train ramped up. Personally, I’m sick to death of the “glass and metal” look, not to mention the “white and chrome” mismatch they seem to love for some of their products, but I did like the iPhone 4 design because it’s less “soft” than most Apple designs.

I don’t think you’re alone, and that would probably be why Apple just hired a molecular engineer to work with carbon fibre based composite materials for a new type of material all together. http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/11/apple-hires-carbon-fiber-expert-kevin-kenney-to-posit-composites/
I think it’s awesome. Prior to this Apple pretty much used “the best” off the shelf components like the glass used in touch based devices and of course they have been making their own processors for some time.
By pioneering their own Processor design while simultaneously stockpiling RAM through contracts with China, I think they will begin to once again focus on design, and harness near-total control over the hardware.
By making their own materials it will be extremely difficult if not impossible for competitors to create cheap knockoffs as the entire build quality and feel will be inherently Apple.

o’well, iphone has never been “revolutionary” as in changing the mobile phone world. Apple just added a sense of usability to it.. what apple need to do (to keep up?) is doing a lot more than just making something that just works good. my guess for the September launch is iOS5 with gesture control (without a physical home button) directly on the touch screen. swipe up-and-down, side-to-side, with two, three, or four fingers, and thats it. hardware will look just like the ipad2 with A5 processor and HD-camera. too late I’ll say, but better late than never..

That’s basically the same home screen I’ve been looking at for 4 years so since I’ve got retina I don’t really care if it’s a little thinner. I’m just not as excited about the new iPhones anymore and it’s gonna take iOS to fix that not an extra .1mm in my hand.

I think that’d actually be a fantastic idea, in the long run. Buy Sprint, pour money into beefing up the network, and offer affordable (but still profitable, of course) plans for the iPhone. It’s a win win for both Apple and the consumer, and an iPhone with more reasonable plans could do a lot to help Apple fight Android.

Landscape navigation! And I don’t think it would be hugely difficult to work the functionality in. This mock-up makes sense compared to the iPad 2.
Just like last year’s BeerGate photos looked like the original iPad, it wouldn’t be far-fetched for the next iPhone to look like this.
And I’m glad Joshua made the point that moving up to 4" screen and keeping the same resolution would remove the claim of Retina Display. After all, Steve did make fun of those “Hummer” phones.
Glad I found this site, strangely enough, through a ZDNet Playbook review.

Jobs will claim that “4.3” screens are too large and just don’t fit in your pocket. No one wants to carry these low resolution tablet phones that some other companies are selling. All of our years of research shows that 3.7" is the perfect size. When you combine that with Retina resolution, it’s just beautiful-amazing Magic. We’re really proud of this. "

4.3 is too large.
iPhone’s width is kinda perfect, if retaining the 3:2 display ratio, I don’t think Apple can comfortably go beyond 4" even they manage to shave the bezel.

Ugly render, but it gets the point across. Sounds pretty interesting what they’re doing so far. I’m actually looking forward to seeing what they have in store. The thinness and the lack of little to no bezel is a little worried some. I’m all for slim and minimal hardware, but when does it become too much? If its near as slim as the iPod Touch, then maybe it’ll be fine. As far as little to no bezel, I don/t know how it’ll be in real world use. Like I said, I’m genuinely excited to see whats going to happen.

Isn’t the point of this site to tell us the future of tech? I don’t see the problem of them doing a mock up based on their info. I’m really interested in the earpiece behind the glass. That will be a pretty cool innovation if they can keep sound quality.

I agree but sound quality was never the iPhone’s strong suit. I think the behind the glass tech is more a product of Jobs’ obsession with minimalism and sleek design. God forbid there’s a hole for a speaker/mic! Aha.

The A5 is like 4 times bigger than the A4. That may be the main reason Apple started making their own SoC’s: to make huge iPad-sized ARM SoC’s (as opposed to phone-sized) that have exponentially more GPU than everything else on market. Plus you’re putting the antennas back on the inside, where they take up space. And you need room for both the world chip and a SIM, not just one or the other, as in iPhone 4. So you would not expect the phone to get radically smaller.
If there is any truth behind this rumor, I would bet that this is a low-end iPhone, essentially an iPod touch with 3G, A4, and minimal storage that is free with $50 per month contract. Basically, a feature phone. Then iPhone 4 sells for $99 with $80 per month contract, and iPhone 5 for $199/$299 with $80 per month contract.
Posted on Apr 22, 2011 | 6:21 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
I see a few issues, for me at least… First, I think the “next” iPhone will be a 4S, not a 5. Similar to the 3GS speed and camera boosts. The iPhone 5 won’t happen until next year when LTE is a more viable option for the real world.
Second, (again, for ME…) if there is a gesture area below the screen, this will eliminate a lot of case designs that hold the phone by covering the top and bottom of the front. I work in a high-impact and dust-filled environment, so my iPhone is in an OtterBox case. Any case that adds any dustproofing or water resistance would interfere with the gesture area, no?
just my 2 cents…

I’m not really a fan of the bigger screen or the tear drop design. I would like the iPhone to be like this but without the tear drop. Anyways speculations aside I know that apple will put out something great that people will love because they care about the people that buy there products.

Awesome mock-up. I have owned every iPhone. I simply hold the phone with my pinky holding the weight from the bottom. three fingers balancing from the back and my thumb hovering above. With that posture, there’s no need for a wide bezel. The only thing that bothers me is the distance between the screen and edge differs between the top & bottom.

Josh I respect you and your sources; however, this the very same source (and report) that told you the iPad 2 would have a retina display, a GSM/CDMA combo antenna and an SD card slot where the speaker was? No way all those things were suddenly dropped from the final product between January 15 and March 2, as I think you tried to reason. There were cases floating around for months before that showed the iPad 2 design perfectly. Obviously it was locked in.
Just take a step back and re-evaluate this source, man.

I’m just saying it sounded like BS and I’m praying we don’t see a similar article on this website in late August reneging on these promised iPhone 5 features. And it’s not from a lack of want; the mockup above is exactly what I want to see.
Oh, and the CPU and RAM were pretty widely known or guessed at before hand, as I recall. As was the information that Apple was purchasing combo GSM/CDMA chipsets. C’mon even my mother knew the iPad 2 would go dual core and have more RAM.

well, i think it’s really cool that you replied so late into the comment stream.
But here are a few gripes/ obvious improvements to the mock-up:
The only way the iphone can taper, is if its top heavy, the camera requires thickness.
It can’t be dramatically thinner, cuz that would take away space for the battery, and they really don’t wanna compromise on that. Also, they could make it thinner, but larger, cuz then they can put a thinner but larger battery.
Also is it possible that you may misunderstand your source a bit?? I mean the whole 3.7 inch display thing at the same resolution. Could it be that they’re keeping the exact same display, but making it slightly longer, adding more pixels, and keeping the same ppi??
Anything about better cameras?
iPad had 256MB of RAM, iPhone 4 had 512, ipad 2 has 512, iPhone 5 has 1GB??
Obviously, it cant be all metal…
(That mock-up is so totally a mash-up of the iPad 2 and iPhone 4!)
Final guess, very slightly thinner than iPhone 4. Tapered edges, but the taper will be more steep. Everything the mock-up shows, but way less drastic in every way. Sound about right?
Any news on the iphone nano??

“No way all those things were suddenly dropped from the final product between January 15 and March 2”.
In all fairness to Josh; Apple has removed features from their products close to the announcement date. The third generation iPod Touch was rumored to have a camera:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/14/hey-maybe-that-ipod-touch-with-a-camera-is-real-after-all/
But when it was released; there was no camera (but there were indications that there was room for a camera in the chassis).

(Look at step 15).
Posted on Apr 22, 2011 | 8:54 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
Yeah I wondered when someone might bring up camera. But we’re not talking about a camera … we’re talking about a super high res screen and SD card slot. While I am certain that sometimes things do change last minute (like the camera, which left footprints) I doubt that either of these features were ever a part of iPad 2. If so, why didn’t all these models/cases floating around for a month before Josh published have a SD card slot? Oh, there were two places that seemed like mystery slots (speaker & SIM tray) which allowed people’s imaginations to run wild with possibiltes (HDMI, SD, min-USB, Lightpeak).
If these things were ever a part of the final design, which Josh’s source reported changed at the last minute, then where are the footprints? What happened with the camera was the exception not the rule. I think most of Apple’s products are pretty much locked in a couple months before release.
Anyway, I really didn’t mean to troll and won’t comment any further on the matter.

While not being an iPhone user, I would like to see the edge to edge with a larger at least 4" screen. Would make me possibly think about getting one. After having the EVO since launch, I can’t do the smaller screens anymore. As for the shape of the device possibly being like the iPod Touch, that I couldn’t handle. Just make the device too thin in my opinion. I think the current thickness of slab phones is thing enough to still be sturdy enough to not break when in the pocket. Especially the back pocket where i usually have my phones. Also, when holding the device as a good portion of people do by the finger tips on the edge, a la the reception issues, I could see that being a problem. You can make it a little thinner but rather that a tapered down bottom I would like to see it having more battery to make sure of the space.

Steve Jobs outted internally three months ago that after nine months of use with the iPhone 4 he had been unhappy with the feel of it for the last three or four; additionally he had said that the overall look had grown tired on him and he was hoping there was still time to push the envelope. Later adding that he didn’t like holding it without a case after a few hours each day, and that it’s unfortunate that other hardware manufactures have already released competitive devices. Meaning their hardware designers hadn’t pushed hardware technology forward enough for the phone to stand alone. He then went on to explain that he expects each new iPhone redesign will have the ability to stand alone until the launch of the, wait for it, next iPhone.
I don’t think anyone lost their jobs over Job’s disappointment but it certainly is taking affect. This was information that I got fourth hand: a friend who works at a Silicon Valley start up who has a friend who works at Google who has a friend that works at Apple. I was delivered this information back in January, near the buildup towards the launch of the iPhone 4 on Verizon.
This explains why the next iPhone4 won’t be the iPhone4S that had been reported. Apple doesn’t need to delay launch for a spec bump, and to be honest a spec bump doesn’t really need to happen. My iPhone4 is lightning quick, I don’t really see what a spec bump would do. However, the iPhone4 still behaves and functions almost exactly the same as the Original iPhone. There are a ton of improvements that could be made to how tasks are accomplished with the addition of a gesture area and a more ergonomic phone. Of course it’s Steve’s ultimate goal to rid his devices of the bezel completely, look for that prediction to come to as much fruition as anything in this article. I’m going to ping my sources on the teardrop design, I have a strong gut feeling against that particular design aesthetic, seems long in the tooth…

This makes me so mad. They would never make the screen come that close to the edge. If you add a case it would partially cover the edge of the screen. No way that would happen. There will always be a slight border around the screen (like the iPhone 4). Come on people.

Apple doesn’t really like the idea of cases as a rule. They don’t usually design a device to allow 3rd parties to develop accessories for their device. They made ‘bumpers’ for the iPhone 4 but in general they don’t seem too concerned about it.
So what I am saying is that I think they would totally try to reduce the bezel until it doesn’t exist. Whatever is sexier.

I honestly think Steve Jobs considers Palm/HP to be Apple’s biggest competition. They try so hard to keep WebOS out of the limelight by releasing and announcing devices around the same time as Palm. I know everyone will think I’m crazy here, but WebOS is iOS done right, and that scares the hell out Mr.Jobs. Well, maybe not scares…rather, he sees them as the biggest potential threat.

This hypothesis isn’t remotely defensible. WebOS failed to catch on because of horrible execution by Palm’s marketing people. They had the worst advertising ever, went exclusive with Sprint (srsly?) and the associates had no idea what the Pre could do and didn’t push it.
Palm’s engineers made a great phone and great OS but the company failed at every other turn.

The mockup would look a lot better if the bezel above and below the screen was the same size. I don’t see Apple going away from that design. They’d make it taller before they made it like that, which is hideous.

All very interesting stuff… especially “the earpiece and sensors are somehow behind the screen itself” part. The very small side bezel on the mockup certainly ties up with those old photos of the parts apparently destined to iPhone 5, and personally I think this speculation sounds perfectly plausible, but tbh the thing that I am actually much more curious to see about is iOS 5 and how Apple will integrate a new notification system into the mix… and will Apple even see fit to include (no doubt best ever) widgets??

No.

The tapered design really fits the hand better then then that of iPhone 4, but it gets rid of extra space for a larger battery. My question does this mean that they are 4 prototypes? This tapered world phone, iPhone 4 with new cam and gobi chipset, 3.5 edge to edge screen budget model and the one with a physical keyboard brings us up to 4 models when been constant rumors of only 3 protos.

It won’t look exactly like the mockup but I believe it will be more similar to the current gen iPod Touch. The iPad 2 got the same flat/contour design as the iPod Touch and there’s no doubt anodized aluminum is a more durable than glass.
Posted on Apr 22, 2011 | 9:48 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
Some thoughts….
Reason why thickness change unrealistic.
The iPad 2 can be thinner than the iPhone 4 because the camera in iPad 2 is awful. Yes it’s 720p but that’s 0.92 of a megapixel and useless for stills. With talk of using Sony’s new 8M CMOS sensors (Depth 5.67mm) (iPhone 4’s camera 6.5mm) less thickness is possible but nowhere near as much as an iPod Touch. We are talking less than a millimeter.
So, taking the camera thickness difference of .83mm off the current depth of an iPhone 4 would leave a new device at 8.47mm.
This is thinner than iPad 2 so that would make Steve happy. He can announce that at the launch but still far thicker than iPod Touch
Thickness of device
9.3mm iPhone 4
8.8mm iPad 2
7.2mm ipod Touch
Placement of Antenna means change of materia possible.
Given the issues with the iPhone 4 the only place the hand isn’t holding is the top. Either the phone would need to be made of non conducting material or if metal, the antenna would need to be in an upward position and 45 degrees spread to keep it away from the head. There would need to be a split horizontal line around the top of the phone for the antenna. Josh’s article doesn’t mention a split line..
…. and how thick are the radios…

Nice post Josh,
i like the rumor that the next iPhone’s going towards the iPod design, specially that design Mockup the nowhereelse guys did, (http://www.nowhereelse.fr/iphone-5-43523/).
I’ve never owned an iPhone, always found greater phones at much cheaper prices to satisfy the hunger (not Androids, not a fan of them) but if the Games are pushed as far as the Real Racing HD2 on the new iPhone than Shift 2 on my PS3 has a rival!
The i4 had a great design for the time, it did what it needed to do, end the i3’s and move on, but i think the people have gotten bored, specially after seeing mockups of larger phones and actual phones with larger screens (the Sensation), all that wasted space in i4’s probably gonna go away.

The fronts of these mockups lack symmetry… Its probably more likely the screen would be shifted downward in the event that this design was even imagined by someone at Apple… I don’t think Ive (or Steve Jobs for that matter) would stand for such blatant asymmetricity… Of course I could be wrong, but it’d still add some plausibility to this rumor…

Going up to a ~95 mm screen adds differentiation to a potential iPhone mini at ~75 mm with a non-retina screen and an A4 SoC.
This would replace/overlap the ipod touch category (basically ipod touch with sim/radios) targeting prepaid and lower end markets. With some flexibility on design they could easily ramp up supply to over 200 million a year.
Apple could build this phone today for close to $100, presumably selling it for $200 (no contract) or $149 (taking the reduced margin to bump the ecosystem).
More interestingly they could go really lean on the thing and build a cloudphone with only ~2 GB local storage. They could prolly get the costs down to around $60-$70 which could sell for under $100 at reduced margin.

This mockup will be lost in a bar and then sold to gizmodo.
Relax with the ugly comments. This mockup is generating identical remarks as last year when the early pictures of iphone 4 were on gizmodo. Everybody was saying it’s a KIRF
It’s not like there is choice. If the elitist in one wants the latest iphone, one will buy it and learn to love it, maybe it will get less ugly with time. Can’t imagine another year with the 3GS, no way.
The good news is that the screen is finally bigger.

Apple likes to play it safe with its design philosophy so I think this is pretty accurate. Look at the MAC monitors in the last few years. All have the same unifying design theme and this is in line with what they want to do in phones.

I can’t say that I think it will look like this… unless the tapering is extremely less dramatic. The i4 is dramatically thin as it is… There is not much “give” there to work with… All of this assuming that the “bulge” portion will be as thick or thinner than the thickest point of the i4. Which I doubt.

I just don’t see the point of a redesign of this current generation. What’s wrong with the iPhone 4’s design? Okay, maybe the antenna but no one’s talked about that in almost a year. Either people are over it or not. I could see them making a tweak to the current design to combat that issue but I don’t think it requires reinventing the wheel.
I’m all for a negative edge-like screen but I don’t think it requires tossing the current design for a new one. Either way I’m there but I think Apple should take a year off before throwing away the current design.

Posted on Apr 23, 2011 | 3:06 AM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
ALL handheld iOS devices (so far) have left-to-right symmetry in body shape, whether the device is being held vertically or horizontally. I’m referring to the SHAPE of the body and placement of screen, not to specific locations of smaller items such as Home button, side buttons, microphone, cameras, speakers, docking port, headphone jack, etc. The shape symmetry includes thickness of device.
I think this is a very intentional design “philosophy” for Apple, and I don’t see it changing. The symmetry is not only visually appealing, but has a very real purpose. For example, the equal areas above and below the iPhone’s screen serve as “handles” so that you can easily hold the iPhone horizontally (with one hand or two hands) without touching or blocking the screen area. When holding the iPhone vertically, the sides are used to grip with one hand, so equivalent area is not needed. However, on an iPad, a border goes around the entire screen because it is needed to grip the much larger and heavier iPad securely in any orientation.
Apple would never produce a product that looks like this “mockup.”

Hmm, also read this “”http://www.ifunia.com/news/engineering-images-of-iphone-5-leaked/" rel="nofollow">Engineering images of iPhone 5 leaked?" , but seems that is not an image of the iPhone 5, I will say that if the real iPhone 5 has a back of similar design (and gorgeous brushed grain), it will be the first iPhone that looks better than the original.
But anyways, knowing Apple, whether it has an Aluminum, Glass, or Liquid Metal back it will turn out great!

That thing looks fugly.
I’m really not sure what the edge-to-edge screen is all about. There’s gonna be some accidental touching and registering touches on the edges of the screen just be holding the phone. Especially when its that thin.
I don’t doubt that its going to be thinner and a different design on the back etc. but man that mockup looks hideous.
Posted on Apr 23, 2011 | 4:09 AM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
IMO if there’s no bezel on the side of the screen your palm will cause accident touches to the screen. For example the phone thinks that you are trying to pinch-to-zoom because it recognizes your palm pressing the screen from the side. “YOU ARE HOLDING IT WRONG”
As a current HTC Desire user the next iPhone starts to look like my favourite candidate for the demanding tasks my primary phone has…

I wonder why the mockup has the thicker end on the top and the thinner end on the bottom…
For there to be balance (and if this mockup is to be “believed”), the thicker end has to be at the bottom.
It would make more sense as it is supposed to “hold” the charging port and speaker grills.
That way, the phone should ideally still be able to stand on a flat surface like a flattened metallic beanbag.
Furthermore, the curvature might be better on the front (where the screen/glass is) to rest on the contours of the face.
Just thinking out loud on this mockup…

for the un tech NFC = http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_field_communication
Near field communication, or NFC, is a set of short-range wireless technologies, typically requiring a distance of 4 cm or less. NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and at rates ranging from 106 kbit/s to 848 kbit/s. NFC always involves an initiator and a target; the initiator actively generates an RF field that can power a passive target. This enables NFC targets to take very simple form factors such as tags, stickers, key fobs, or cards that do not require batteries. Why is it that Apple has such consistency in most of their designs (macbook, imac, ipad, ipod) but the iPhone seems to be all over the place? Look at the difference between the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, and now this. They all look drastically different. It flies in the face of the impression I get from their macbooks. That is, come up with an amazing design and make conservative, incremental changes to it.

It looks terrible. At least the top and bottom black border should be the same heigth, and I doubt that if it’s a teardrop design, the thicker part would be at the bottom.

Posted on Apr 23, 2011 | 9:55 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
It just looks like an iPhone 4 on steroids and a diet lol. Hmm I think the mockup looks kind of strange…like the proportions are just really weird. The screen is really big but the rest of it looks like its shrunke. Well i’m not going to hate on whoever made this mockup; its just a mockup after all. Good try! But why is there no mention of LTE?? That should be THE most important thing; Apple needs to catch up (as always) to the emerging 4G market and it’s not going to do that by sitting on its ass telling us 3G is fine.
Posted on Apr 23, 2011 | 9:55 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
I am really digging the back. I would personally prefer something along the lines of what the iPad looks like, but this looks nice too. The front, however…I will just chalk that one up to bad photoshop skills and wait for Apple to have the final word.

I would enjoy a larger screen. After using several “jumbo” phones for the past year, iPhone’s screen feels way too small.
Posted on Apr 23, 2011 | 10:12 PM EDT reply Recommend Flag actions
I’d say no way. Apple generally does NOT release two major redesigns one right after the other. Not to mention that the Verizon iPhone 4 just came out in February, so why would they replace that with a brand-new design only 7 months later?
I think this is going to be much like the iPhone 3G to the 3GS – a more “under the hood” upgrade that keeps the same form factor essentially intact. I’d believe the bezel around the screen getting thinner, but that’s it – that doesn’t change the overall shape or design.

I don’t mind the side of the unibody-style version but the front looks ugly. Interesting though.

i dont think the next iphone needs to be thinner. A drop in weight could be done by switching to carbon or even aluminum – that mixed with new internals is more than enough.
Hell, I’d be happy with just internals – a so called “3GS” update.

An wedge design will be great for when the phone is one the table. I find the angled wedge shape of the Macbook Air (11" in our case) to be very convenient, never mind sexy. It positions the keyboard perfectly, while for a phone, it will ensure the touch screen is angled correctly for viewing AND touching.
People need to stop paying too much attention to these mockups! Don’t confuse a mockup with a leaked photo.

asymetrical is the dumbest thing I can think of. Holding landscape would be slightly awkward. If the iPod touch is closer to the ipad 2 in design, THAT is very believable and more likely. The iPod is essentially a small version tablet, so it makes sense for Apple to match their aesthetics. The iPhone… well I’m sure will get a slight redesign or be made with the new metals Apple obtained exlusive rights to use.

Interesting, if true then other rumors about the next iPhone using a capacitive home button would seem to fit quite well. Im all for more screen and less bezel and i’m definitely down with some form of inductive charging. If they can build the phone with the technology inside then it would kill the need for those sleeves.

I’ve had my suspicions that the iPhone 5 may look like the most recent iPad and iPod generations. Apple need to realise that they need to distinguish their products more and not make them all look similar… It’s boring.

Hello and thank you for your comment. Lets start a debate shall we? First off I feel the cons out weigh the pros forv1080p in my opinion. Processor would be over taxed, battery consumed largely, HDD would be strained, and so on. I think these are a few if not all the reasons 1080p would not be welcomed. I personally cant tell the difference, but then again my advanced age(35) may be the reason? I look forward to having a larger screen to compliment the ios abilities! I came from exus one but had used iphone 4 and previous iphone models that i enjoy more than most cellphones! Im actually using the ipad 2 3G as a replacement until the ip5 is 0ut!

I respect you guys tons, but don’t you think it is a tad disingenuous to imply that this might be an accurate description of the next iPhone? I have little doubt that you have accurate information of an iPhone prototype — I just don’t think it’s an iPhone 5.
I think something similar happened with rumors that the iPad 2 would feature a Retina Display. Although I’m confident a high resolution iPad exists somewhere on Apple’s campus, it isn’t an iPad 2.
I don’t question the accuracy of your sources, but I am at odds with your conclusion. As much as I love the iPhone 4’s design, I would be happy to be proven wrong, though.

I have to say this is a lot like concept car. It’s great for ideas and sharing material potentials but as a true in the “real” world use case, it is just way too thin/dainty. This thing much like the Touches, is just too small for real world use as a phone. I myself love a thin design it looks great and very futuristic but trying to one hand a call or text with it seems far fetched. Even with some sort of plastic coated metal/plastic ala HTC on the back it still looks like it would either not feel substantial in your hand for fine or precision control, that, or you would be hitting all over the “gesture” area or bottom of the screen with your thumb and firing up apps or dialing people or whatever. Or you feel like you always have to squeeze a little hard on the sides just to keep it in your hand which may hit a volume rocker or camera button, not good. I have had Blackberries, Droid Eris, Epic 4G and iPod Touches and for one handed operation the title goes to the Blackberry Curve, after that the Eris (hard buttons on bottom), and then the Epic which has heft that allows for more controlled use of the device with one hand(keyboard closed of course) and last the iPod Touch (3rd gen. btw) it just doesn’t feel as safe/comfortable in my hand to text, surf, play games with one hand. I depend on a silicone skin for grip. I mean I can do it and will continue to but, our Touch is a secondary device, a game player/media viewer/toy for around the house. And even then, in landscape holding this little slice of heaven is not a real ergonomic experience, it never feels like it fully rests. Its just so damn light and thin. This thing you are describing will be a phone. Something I depend on an hourly basis if not more. I will be taking calls, firing off texts, searching maps and trying to take care of business and this looks like it would float right off my hand. The current IPhone has heft and feels good in hand. The size is good, it just needs a little more screen. Take the current hardware iteration and you add NFC, a solar panel on the back and a 4 inch Mirasol screen with that dual-core A-5, I might just bite.

So they’re going to add inductive charging and a gesture area. Does this sounds familiar? This wouldn’t bother me if I didn’t know that Jobs will announce it asthough he has invented it. Card system style multitasking next maybe? Personally – I think they should work on some kind of decent multitasking and an unobtrucive and intuitive notification system. Isn’t that what computing on a smartphone is about? Or maybe what Jobs means by Technology getting out of the way is that we should all have devices that aren’t really moving forward anymore. Like a blackberry or something. – Apple says “Buy a Blackberry”.

I like update #2, but I think the plastic interface between the glass front and metal sides is too pronounced. The metal might ride a bit higher without losing the look of a bastard child between an iPod Touch, A Triumph TR-7 and an extended Motorola RAZR. Which met an original iPad in a dark alley and was overcome in an orgy.
But I am more interested in the internals. Better GPS, and universal radio modem (CDMA and GSM technologies and the agility receiver over the 7 bands needed (though some overlap)) so I can buy an unlocked one, put it on Sprint in the US, and gleefully cancel my well overpriced “We have you by the short ones” AT&T service and sneer at the Verizon, sure we’ll raise or rates to match AT&T sales people. And still use Telus and Kyivstar when traveling.

Damn, well that’s a trend? Why to make iphone even thinner? I have the impression that the 5 model will break in half from the fact that it just watching. IPhone should not be a supermodel, it must be practical

I hope they go back to a similar style of the first one , as it was much more robust i have broken 4 of the iPhone 4’s it needs that metal surround to it to protect the glass, a lot of my friends have broken there’s to never had such a good phone though i can say that would not do with out it :-)

Just make the corners less rounded please. That’s too much exagerated. Try it, you’ll be more close to a real device.

You should hire a good graphic designer or Photoshop designer wink plus you can see most of the pics here.. even though they’re also fake :) http://entertainment-lobby.blogspot.com/2011/09/iphone-5-real-pictures-design-concept.html

I believe the side-view image from @CDugD:disqus is stolen from MacPredictions post dated 12/31/2010. Stealing stuff is not good karma, as Steve once said.

Hopefully this would be something similar to next iPhone design because I would love to get larger screen but still get the same size of the footprint

the screen looks ridiculous, if that’s what they have as the answer to bigger screen, then id take the smaller screen. that looks like Nobita (from Doraemon) with his head of hair
