Gateway has long been known — yes, even in its cow spot heyday — for producing budget computers with mainstream specs. Even since the company was acquired back in 2007, it's remained a fairly run-of-the-mill line within Acer's computing empire. So, you know, it's more than a bit shocking to see Gateway's ID47 using brand new display technology and pushing the limits. And we mean the latter quite literally, since the laptop packs LG's extremely thin Shuriken screen, which extends very close to the edges and thus enables the 14-inch display to fit in what Gateway would typically consider a 13.3-inch chassis. Just like Digitimes reported back in April, Acer is using the new type of panel here to substantially cut down on the width of the system. It's a pretty neat trick in terms of actual display size and the edge-to-edge glass looks extremely clean, but unfortunately, it doesn't buy you any extra pixels — you're still stuck with an 1366 x 768 resolution.

Beyond the fancy new display, the ID47 keeps to its Gateway roots, meaning it houses a very solid  array of specs for under $800. The $700 configuration buys you a Core i5-2410M processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, integrated HD 3000 graphics, and a 500GB 5,400rpm drive. Jump on up to the $799 model and you'll get an NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M GPU with Optimus. And all that comes in a fairly portable .85 - 1.14-inch thick / 4.6-pound package with an optical drive and a speedy USB 3.0 port.

Naturally, Gateway (or Acer) couldn't just stop there — it's also releasing two budget 15.6-inch NV57 Series rigs. The first in that family comes in at $629.99 and packs AMD's new Llano quad-core A8-3500M APU. The second's got a Core i3-2310M processor / integrated graphics. Not bad for those college bound students shopping on a budget this summer, but that shrunken bezel ID47 seems like it's destined to be head of the class. Hit the break for the full press release and some hands-on shots of that crazy thin-bezel.
