Apple 27-inch Thunderbolt Display now available: FaceTime HD camera, 2.1 speaker system, and $999 price tag
New Mac minis? MacBook Airs? Apple knows what you're really wanting is an excuse to upgrade your almost-but-not-quite two-year-old Cinema Display — only now, it looks like Apple's opted for new naming convention. Say hello to the Thunderbolt Display. The 27-inch, 2560 x 1440 resolution, LED backlit screen has built-in FaceTime HD camera, 2.1 speaker system, integrated MagSafe charger for Mac laptops, three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port (someone reading this just clapped — it's okay, you're among friends), one Gigabit Ethernet port, and of course, one Thunderbolt port for daisy-chaining up to five additional Thunderbolt products.
The display works with existing HDMI, DVI and VGA adapters, but if you have a Thunderbolt port, you'll be able to run two external displays simultaneously. Better still, that one Thunderbolt port will act as your link to every device attached to the display, including the USB and FireWire devices — Apple is calling it the "ultimate docking device," and well, it certainly does take out some of the clutter. Target release window is "within the next 60 days" and asking price is $999. Pictures after the break!
