Dell's Inspiron laptops have long been known for their chunky size, bright color options, and easy-on-the-wallet price tags. It's been a rather stagnant brand in the company's consumer notebook lineup, but Dell may just be finding out that more than specs need to change. The new Inspiron 13z and 14z no longer look like they are just for youngsters — they've been considerably slimmed down, the glossy plastics have been ditched for an aluminum lid / palmrest, and they are available in only a "diamond black" and "fire red." No pinks, purples, magentas, or lime greens here. Sharing design cues with the recent XPS 15z, the Inspirons aren't as thin as that forthcoming crop of ultrabooks (the 14z measures just under an inch thick), but to their credit, both models house an optical drive and a slew of ports, including USB 3.0 and HDMI jacks.

Both the 13-inch and 14-inchers are available with your typical array of specs — Sandy Bridge Core i3 and i5 processors, up to 8GB of RAM, and a choice of both hard and solid state drives. Sadly, there aren't discrete graphics or higher resolution display options (yep, you're locked in at 1366 x 768), but we guess you can't expect much more for that compelling $599.99 starting price. The 14z will be available starting today, while the 13z will only be hitting overseas for now. Now, of course, we wouldn't blame you if you were holding out for something a bit more mobile and powerful, and considering Dell's press release reveals that more "mobile products" will be launching through the end of the year, you may just get lucky. Still, we're certainly not underestimating what's happening here: Dell's making real strides in tidying up the overall aesthetic of the sub-$600 laptop. Hit the break for a few hands-on shots and the full press release.
