Fossil has spun off Meta Watch as an independent company that will focus on popularizing its connected watch platform. The company won't be selling consumer products, but rather promoting its platform to other brands for use in connected watches and wearable electronics — sort of like a standard OS for wristwatches. There are several pieces that need to fall into place for this to happen, but this separation allows Meta Watch to work on getting watchmakers and developers into position without being distracted by things like watch design and fashion. Back in July, we immediately recognized the Meta Watch developer unit as a watch nerd's dream — let's hope this newly independent company can make it come true.
