Public relations - a systemic issue within Microsoft?

As Microserfs, we all know what it's like to love a company like this one, only to have those around us rubbish it in favour of flavour-of-the-month companies like Google and Apple.

We all know that within Microsoft there's a huge amount of great stuff going on, but no matter what happens it's as if they can do no right. Even when something as amazing as WP Mango comes out, or Kinect, there's a long line of people within and without the tech industry ready to knock them for whatever failing/s that are real or imaginery.

So, rather than look at the views of people who haven't used Windows since XP, and yet feel compelled to tell all and sundry that WIndows is a pile of tosh, let's discuss a more simple question - how does MIcrosoft fix their public relations image? How do they turn things around so that they are looked upon more favourably by the commentariat, and actually given more column inches than zero when companies like Apple can seemingly get front-page news for anything they announce...
