China Telecom plans launch US network for frequent travelers using leased capacity
Very few companies have been successful leasing wireless service from the major carriers to run their own network (remember Helio?), but that's not stopping China Telecom from attempting to launch in the US next year. China Telecom's plan is to offer "competitive" pricing and catering to frequent travelers between the US and China, such as businesspeople or students studying stateside. China Telecom says the network will be a first step towards an increased North American presence that might involve purchasing or building a network here in the US, as well as expansion into Canada. We'll see if China Telecom can find a willing carrier partner — and if they can succeed where so many others have failed.
