We really did it, guys: we made a show. On Monday night, Joshua, Nilay, and Paul gathered in front of a live, studio audience, and, frankly, blew minds. Special guest Matias Duarte sat down with Josh for an in-depth interview, along with a little game we like to call "Rate That Skin!" We also got to do a live demonstration of the Lytro light field camera, and Josh and the boys ran through their favorite "New Thing," with 15 seconds apiece to share their hearts. And that's just scratching the surface. Basically, we made TV... er, web magic, and we'd like to share it with you; please join us as we unveil season 1, episode 1, of On The Verge.

Really great show!! But.. even though you had an in-depth Nexus demo with Matias the day before it was revealed, I was a bit disappointed with how little time you spent on it on the show..

For a man with a flower blouse, calling metro lavatry texts is like eating his own reclycled waste. ICS is clearly highly influented by metro at best. Just take a look at ICS photo “hub” and then look at WP7 camera roll, and tell me if matias is full of it.
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 4:13 AM EST reply Recommend (7) Flag actions
Although they are both modern in design, WP7 has that infatuation with silhouettes that ICS lacks. I think that’s where he gets the simile (picture the little lady and man shapes on bathroom doors).

Really? Meh…
I don´t care for it. I liked the old setting of “The Endgadget Show” more…
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 9:09 AM EST reply Recommend (3) Flag actions
As do I. I felt that it was more personal when they were all sitting around a table discussing things, rather than a talk show set up. Josh clearly has what it takes to be a great host, with out a doubt, but IMO the Engadget set up was a bit nicer.
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 10:20 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
No way, I like this format way better. Much higher production values. Also I like the variety of bits, I hope they introduce more. I already know all of the news b/c I read The Verge. I want some commend and something different from the show… Like Dungeons…
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 11:35 AM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
The format is great, dont get me wrong. The different bits are fun, Im just suggesting a round table format instead of a host’s desk and a couch. I felt the desk made Josh seem separate from the rest of the show, almost a bit distant.
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 12:27 PM EST reply Recommend (4) Flag actions
they did that for a reason…dungeon talk…..
Posted on Nov 18, 2011 | 11:19 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I think the talk show thing works better for guests… but it seems weird that he had to bring out Paul and Nilay as “guests.”
That setup doesn’t put Nilay, Paul, and Josh on the same level/in the same roles. It’s a little weird.
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 1:12 PM EST reply Recommend (6) Flag actions
I found that to be odd as well, that they were considered more as guests rather than equals. We’ll see what happens next episode, I suppose.

I loved everything about ti except for the fullscreen in another window. It like never buffers somehow, but now YouTube seems to have stopped having to always buffer for me too, so something happened. Maybe it really doesn’t matter to me, but vid.io was fine, and it was unique, something to differentiate The Verge

Matias’ comment about white balance etc. being crap was really Steve Jobs esqe. I agree, the camera should just do it, not make me worry about it.
Posted on Nov 15, 2011 | 11:44 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Imagined myself taking a picture of my slightly-less-than-totally-wasted friends in a bar, making silly faces, and saying: “hold on for a minute, white balance is slightly off”.
Duarte has a real valid point there. Pictures taken with a smartphone are taken for fun. If you’re so serious about photography that white balance is an issue, you should be bringing at least a P&S along.

great first show… was a little disappointed to watch pauls big phone spot because it was already released for a while now, and when i realized there was no on the verge last night i went and watched basically all the content on the youtube channel. Josh needs to drink more before the show, he’s always seem uncomfortable in front of audiences (mainly Jimmy Fallon) and i can’t help but feel like both late night appearances and this show are a slight bit dumbed down comparatively to vergecast standards… huge shot out to Chad Mumm great production quality, love the music transitions and as i type this I’m getting verge notifications thats he’s replying to people in this post, the verge = too cool.

Love it! Thanks for posting so quick, “Top Gear for gadgets” is something I’ve thought about for a long time and this is a great, far more original version of that.
A little first-episode awkwardness, but that’ll improve super fast of course. It’s all about the people/personalities, which are all here as always :D Maybe a little bit of teleprompter-ing for intros and transitions? I can see a lot of people disliking that but Josh, Nilay and Paul were a lot clearer and on point when they had a 15 second limit.
Overall in love with this. Music, intro, set, editing, segments— what you’re doing here isn’t “TV” like the site isn’t a “magazine”, but somehow manages to reach that quality but still be uniquely web-centric. I don’t even know how to word this, The Verge is just a next level media outlet. So exciting.

I couldn’t help but feel the older shows back with Engadget had a bit more charm to them. I’m not sure if it’s the venue or something else (too big? unengaged audience?). The production quality was top notch as always but that isn’t really the problem. I also cringed a bit during the interview with Matias; some of his strong points were kind of dismissed or not given enough credit. Maybe I got the wrong impression but I felt like Josh didn’t understand that the measure of security of the face unlocking feature is limited and is for the convenience of people who are less worked about a sibling or spouse getting access and more about a random guy looking through your stuff if you forgot your phone on the subway. It didn’t seem like an ‘intelligent’ conversation where it’s a two way kind of thing and more like a talk show-esque deal we’re used to on TV. You got some one on one time with Matias Duarte!!! Why not go in depth with some pet peeves you have with android or more interesting questions the more tech savvy readers would really enjoy. I’d say personally the highlight of the interview was way part about the different OSs and their respective overall look/design.
All in all very entertaining (awkward at times), funny and I really did enjoy it. Looking forward to the next one!

I think it’s time somebody gave some tough love: There needs to be more format. For beginners, have the logo show up with a slow start, introduce the host, give a quick rundown of what’s going to be on the show in list format, as to entice and keep viewers throughout the program. Lead into the first story by introducing co stars. For each story assign someone the lead, giving them rule over the stories introduction. Run a clip that coincides with the topic at hand and ease back into focus, and only then start to debate. Try to be informative, but with just enough simplicity to help both knowledgable and lesser informed audiences get a proper understanding on the fast paced coverage. Don’t be afraid to look at the audience and communicate to them, but don’t interact and ask for responses. Their responses disrupt and elongate the show, losing focus of those on stage. Make sure that when you have more than two people talking at once, that their comments don’t cross over one another. Again, have stories told by one person and ask for everyone else’s opinions in turns. Not to name names but Paul is such a bright mind, it’s a shame his perspective didn’t see through to the end more. At some points you self advertise, as though there isn’t a giant ‘On The Verge’ logo hovering right behind you. There was a moment where a joke was made about a fault, “Really? Didnt laugh at that one?” if I recall correctly. This is humorous but brings what could be considered a fault of the show into the light, making it clear for all to view. Even at one point you admit that you are in “extreme beta”, conveying you are unprepared in your position. Make up your minds and decide whether to hide this fact or use it as your selling point. “Always in Beta, Always on Top, Always On The Verge.” has a nice ring to it you know? Also, you could learn a few things from Vlad, as his diction is impeccable. A more intamite vocabulary could really impose professionalism and thus help gather a larger audience and a better overall image. The humor, although laugh out loud funny, is quite sarcastic. Not that sarcasm is bad, but after 45 minutes it becomes stale on the ears. There really is room to be a bit more tasteful and restrictive on your use of humor. For, it gives you an identity one could argue, but for how long? The discussion is the star of the show after all, and it isn’t getting the face time it deserves. If you just pose more questions, rather than plainly inform, I think that’s where newcomers will see your distinctive identity. But then again, questions like, “What’s up with the font?” don’t really count, especially when you continue asking it well after you’ve gotten your answer. And seeing how the majority of questions will be asked in the interview, I say play that up as much as you can. Let the interview be the main piece of your show, and let viewers actually look forward to something new every month. I mean you got a main freaking designer of WebOs and Android sitting on your couch for your disposal, and I felt I had no idea who he was, what was so important about him, and why it was an honor to even have him on the show altogether. And he really didn’t feel special when you had him stand awkwardly behind the camera demo with no input for what was going on. If I may suggest, show the demo in between the interview as to break the static flow, give the interviewee something to do, and keep viewers interested. And pardon my vietnamese, but what was with that 5 minute long giveaway? It’s cute and extremely nice, but I’m ultimately not getting anything out of watching a few faces not lighten up after getting a few Windows phones. Put it in the credits or at the very end, if you keep it at all. And not to salt the wound (any more than I already have,) but use those 15 second testimonials to summarize the casts favorite features of the show. It brings the focus right back into the program, shows the diverse personalities and opposing opinions of your team, and leaves the audience with a better grasp for what they just watched. Other things like the camera cutting to different angles too quickly putting focus on visuals rather than on what’s being said, reading notes off a stack of paper when you’re running a tech show, pointless underused robot voices, moving to stools when you have quite fine couches already on stage, and even “dungeons” can be excused, but if they persist after this show they will quickly begin to stick out and lower the quality of your news. I hate to sound so negative, but no one here really mentioned all of these gripes. If anything I’m trying to give you guys things to improve on, because your show truly deserves to succeed.
The set, production values, and the now famous intro, are all amazing. The quality of your observations are unnervingly accurate and the manor of how you convey them is equally excellent. Understand these are my opinions alone, and that it is hard to criticize something I’ve grown to love so much. But I’d feel ignorant not to voice these problems. In conclusion, ‘On The Verge’ needs an identity that can’t come from presentation or style alone. It needs to come from quality content. And you clearly already have that, you just need to show it more. If your podcast is your storyboard, then your show is your script. Streamline your content from the podcast, and present your findings in an easier to follow, better focused, much shorter, and noticeably more aggressive program. In essence, avoid using humor and plain awkwardness to retrieve answers, but rather confidence and plain persistence.
“You don’t score design!” “You obviously have never read The Verge.” are the lines that we love, and it is the same wit that will prolong your business into success.

I could be 87 years old and still not know what I’m talking about. Age has nothing to do with the quality of an argument. Although, you often get better at it as you grow. Don’t doubt yourself is basically what I’m trying to say. As long as you have supporting evidence for your opinions, your thoughts are always relevant.
WARNING: From another 16 year old who doesn’t mind being wrong, its all part of learning.

I liked the first show. There was some witty humor and interesting gadgets. I especially like the street cameras and other outdoor videos. The music was very good too, though you could have more. There are just two things were I think improvement is needed to make this an even better show:
1. More responsive cameras: Very often you want to show something up close, but we don’t get a close-up. You’re saying “are you guys seeing this?” and no, we’re not. You either need an on hand camera that you can pop out at any time or camera men who react faster. I would have loved to see the guy’s iPhone 3G but didn’t and the other close ups of gadgets just took too long to happen. This is about the gadgets after all so this is essential.
2. Less talkative host: Joshua, I think you’re really funny and have a lot of interesting things to say, but you just say them so much that the others don’t have enough room to shine. Remember that a good host is first an enabler. During the first part of the show, you would ask questions to Nilay and Paul but they would barely finish a sentence that you would cut them off to give your opinion. Because of this, Duarte’s interview lacked a bit of dynamism as his answers were mostly simple affirmations or short comments rather and I feel like he didn’t have the occasion to really show his design expertise and knowledge of the tech industry. Don’t get me wrong, I like your comments and witty remarks, but I get the feel that you’re too eager to throw them at the audience.
Other than these 2 points (which are not that bad really), I loved the show and am looking forward to episode 2. Keep up the good work and thanks.

Agreed. Josh has real potential to be a great host — good voice, delivery, wit — he just needs to let others talk.

Solid show, I also really liked the colors – there was a really good mixture of the tans and reds in Josh’s suit and desk with the greens and blues in the background. Also enjoyed the interview with Matias, but there was so much you guys could have talked about and I feel that the time was squandered a bit by going long on Roboto.
Also, you guys totally snubbed him when you went on to your iPhone giveaway – no handshake or a “thank you”!

Agreed, and that shot of Matias trying to give Paul a hand was kind of embarrassing (though I am sure Paul simply didn’t see it and was pumped with adrenaline during the show).
Great show, loved it, during the show I kept wondering “wow, they sure have a lot of staff if they can do this every week AND run their website”, then I heard it was a monthly show, too bad, but understandable.
Posted on Nov 16, 2011 | 6:22 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Also, and I don’t mean this in a bad way at all, but Joshua needs to learn when to shut up.
I love how he presents the show as a talk host, I enjoy his jokes, and really enjoyed the flow of the show, but when you have high profile guests on the show, you really should try to let them talk more and not answer questions for them you yourself asked in the first place or not invite them at all if they aren’t allowed to talk more (which I don’t think was the situation here).
Just my 2 cents.

Am I the only one who found the banter with Matias totally awkward? It’s like when you make a joke with someone and for whatever reason it doesn’t click, and the whole conversation gradually tanks like a train wreck in slow motion.
Not that this was quite that bad, but I didn’t get the sense there is a great vibe between Josh and Matias. Paul snubbing him as proof…

Great show, but I think there is a lot of room for improvement.
The interview with Matias was disappointing. Josh spent too much time trying to get info out of Matias that there is no way he would be able to give. I think asking Matias what he thought of specific devices of Google partners was a bad idea, the Grid 10 worked ok.. He could have just asked a general idea of what he thought about skins in general. It also seemed that whenever the talk was about to get interesting it got derailed by something like a dungeon reference. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a little humor, but that was a little too dark.
There were a few other points that I felt Josh was hostile towards Matias, and not letting him get out any complete thoughts. A good example of the kind of questions i would like to see is when they discussed Gingerbread and how much time/influence Matias had on that.
Another thing was the RAZR “review”. Basically, you guys just flashed the phone quickly and then bashed it. I would have liked to see some nice close up shots and some level-headed discussion.
Too much negativity brings everything down.
The Lytro segment was good.

Great show guys. Loved the video bits you add in there. Great guest, but as an interviewer, I would have liked to see Josh prompt questions and not interrupt the guest as much. Josh’s witty comments were very funny, but we get to hear him every week in the podcast. If you are going to bring in outside guests I would like to hear from them more, and for that segment the host should fade into the background a bit more. Other than that I really enjoyed it!

@J Tops, the show could have been better. Contrast this show with your “The Engadget Show” #1 to see what I mean. To me it seems the excitement and polish from the other efforts were more than what was present here (especially for The Verge’s first attempt). Great choice for a first guest however give him/them time to expound on your questions/comments without so much interruption. This site is awesome… miles ahead of the other guys. Good job on that! Now supplement that with a killer show (and lighten up the stage a little bit… little too morbid!)

I think Josh needs to brush up on his interviewing skills a bit. He interrupts way too often. Mathias really didn’t have a chance to speak much about anything. Great show guys. I can’t say Duarte impresses me too much since his history is a bunch of “almost hit” products , but regardless, at 38 years old the guy has certainly had a decent career and is somebody in the industry whose opinion is interesting to hear. That new camera rocks. Makes me wonder if Google should have used that new camera technology in the “Face Unlock” feature to check if the person unlocking the screen is a really there or if it is a photo of that person — with the ability to do 3D images off a single photo that would be impressive. It does not look like it is coming to mobile any time soon given the size of the device.

Really great job on set design, production, topics, intro visuals and of course – HAL 9000’s girlfriend introducing all the guests! That was a nice touch that was On The Verge of being funny!
I agree with a lot of the other readers here in that I’d love to have access to the entire video. I’d love to have seen all of the silent / awkward moments in between Josh’s dungeon references with Matias.
But, I can also understand that Chad has already busted his ass to edit this thing together once… Which is why he should definitely release any and all video evidence to The Verge community for highlight reels and mash-ups!!! No, SERIOUSLY!!
Oh, and while we’re on the subject of typography… Why is the font in this window I’m typing my comment different than the rest of the site? It looked like Notepad from Win 3.x and it feels like poison!!!

A little disappointed with the interview with Matias. Yes, it was funny. But, wish there was more depth to the conversation. I think it was a missed opportunity with a great opening guest, as I barely learnt anything new; Matias spoke no longer than a sentence or two at a time. Unnecessarily too much Josh humour (we have the podcast for that) and not enough Matias.

If you are looking for positive feedback, here’s mine. I love late night shows and technology and you guys deliver on something that feels like both. I look forward to more of these shows!

Really enjoyed the show. The street random questions bit looked great. What was it shot on? Were there and colour enhancements done in post production? And yes, asking random people on the street questions is a painful experience at best. It’s hard not to feel like a freak. Tip: Bring along a member of the opposite sex. It seems to put the mind at ease.

The Verge is based of D.C.? Why can you not do the show in D.C.! :p

Great first show! It was cool being there in person to see “behind the scenes” and how the show is really put together. Even though it was a little over an hour, it went by too fast. Chad since this can’t be a weekly show, maybe it could be two hrs. instead of one? Also shout out to Trent Wolbe for holding it down. Loved the robotic “New Thing” soundbite that was first repeated as a joke, but really fit in perfectly with that segment. I’d love to have that as my incoming email or new text message alert. Also Paul, IIRC before the show started, you were just in white shirt without jacket, and without glasses. That was a really good (dare I say “hot”) look for you. You should rock that next time.

Does anyone have more information on the special linear fluorescent lamp-like bulbs that were used all around the set to produce those cool color effects?
Thanks!

Posted on Nov 18, 2011 | 2:40 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
They are called iColor Accents – RGB LEDs. We used mostly 4’-0" fixtures broken up into 4.8" segments that allow for the type of effects you saw. Glad you liked it.

Matias must’ve been high when he made those comments about Windows Phone and iPhone’s UI because he totally didn’t want to acknowledge them in the show even though Josh pushed it.

Incredible first show! Love it, love it, love it! Hopefully someone’ll get smart and pick this up for network TV. You could have Fallon as your first guest :)
I’m sure the guys and gals at Engadget are happy for you but they’ve gotta be hurtin’ right now. The Verge is doing things I’ve never seen or experienced before and they’re still just a blog attracting the scum of the commenting community (with that said I leave comments on occasion) .
If you ever need a Phoenix correspondent I’m in the (Face) book.

Snap judgment: Matias is a douche bag.
Exhibit A: Robot is a mishmash of preexisting fonts, hardly original http://typographica.org/2011/on-typography/roboto-typeface-is-a-four-headed-frankenstein/.
Exhibit B: iOS and WP are still far ahead of ICSfrom a design perspective yet he feels the need to bash both.
Exhibit C: His shirt.

Cool retro futuristic set… very Tubeway Army. Josh jut needs Gary Numan’s coffin/car to complete the look:

Guys… Seriously. I cannot speak highly enough of the design/presentation of this show. I love the style…
Only like 2 minutes in and I need to say that. =) But it really applies to the whole site.

good job guys… i really enjoyed the show. look forward to future guests, comedy, etc.
even though i am an apple fanboy (to a degree), what matias has accomplished with
‘ics’ is impressive, and he does understand function & polish. you also nailed it with
the intro render segment and the set design, etc. keep it up… this site has everything.

Brilliant first show. Funny, informative and flat-out interesting. Especially enjoyed the bits with Matias Duarte. Roboto is gorgeous and he seems like he really knows his stuff. Keep it it up, The Verge is my new central tech news source.

On The Verge has the potential to finally bring the internet to character based programming. The people on the show become just as important as the show itself. In the fifties and sixties we had prime time game shows and talk programs such as Ed Sullivan and variety shows like Sonny and Cher. The internet has been waiting for truly professional programming like this to graduate from the monitor to the TV.
