The BlackBerry PlayBook has just become the first rooted BlackBerry device, and developers xpvqus, neuralic, and cmwdotme are preparing to release their rooting tool, dubbed DingleBerry. Neuralic can be seen below demonstrating control over the backlight and other system features, and has shown the device running Hulu in another video.
The video shows the PlayBook running BlackBerry Tablet OS 1.0.8, but neuralic claims the root also works on the 2.0 beta, and that rooting the beta allows access to the Android Market. Rooting persists after the device is rebooted. Besides giving users access to new features, this could mark the first step towards getting the PlayBook to run a custom OS, making the PlayBook more attractive to people who agreed with our assessment of the current software.

DingleBerry as a name is a stroke of comic genius

If only RIM made a phone that attached to the Playbook like the ASUS Padfone…

I normally don’t read BlackBerry posts, but when I saw a name like that, I had to read on.

Meh. After DingleBerry it’s all downhill from there.

Saying “Rooting the Playbook is the first step towards running a custom OS on it”
is like saying:
“waking up and getting out of bed is the first step to murdering a family a cute kittens.”
Its kind of a leap. Just Sayin.

Totally agreed.
It takes a team of people working for no short period of time to get the drivers and firmware to a state where you can run Android or another OS on a device that wasn’t meant for it.

I didn’t think this was possible. Silly me :)

Once you’ve spend some time with webOS, rooting just seems so… antiquated.
All you have to do to “root” your webOS device (any device from Pre to Touchpad) is type in the Konami code. That’s your password for all kinds of homebrew goodness.

Google Nexus devices are just about as easy to root.

maybe but it’s still no ‘upupdowndownleftrightleftrightbastart’ in the searchbar like webOS :P

I used to hack to my hearts delight on the Pre. too bad it got stolen. Ive moved on to Android as their are no more WEB OS devices.

A fast, full featured $200 tablet running ICS is a sexy proposition. Make it happen, please.

It probably will, with the Fire.

I wouldn’t say the Fire is “full featured”
No GPS, Bluetooth, or Cameras… not to mention a total lack of physical buttons

Up in my office in Canada. like 4 guys on my floor got the Playbook. One guy got two rainchecks, one from Best Buy and one from Future Shop good for 30 days. I hope the supply dosent dry up like it did in the USA! Im holding off on a tablet for now. Seeing how ICS will migrate…
