Cricket Wireless may not be the place to find the latest and greatest smartphones, but the company has made a name for itself by offering budget-priced plans with unlimited messaging and data. It's now expanding its reach outside the US with the addition of a global local number option and a pair of new international rate plans. Global local numbers take the sting out of friends abroad calling you stateside: for $10 a month, Cricket will provide you a local number in one of over 40 different countries. Residents there call you at local rates, and the call rings through to your phone here in the US. Global local numbers are also available in Mexico for $5 a month.

The new contract-free international plans look to keep costs low on the subscriber's side by bundling a global local number, 500 call minutes to international landlines, and 30 minutes to international mobiles, for $65 a month. A Mexico-only version is available for $55, and both plans include unlimited US calling, global messaging, and data. Unlimited global SMS and MMS is also included with any plan that costs $45 or more, or as an add-on for $5. With the bigger carriers pulling unlimited data, raising ETFs, and cutting SMS options, we love Cricket's consumer-friendly approach — we just wish they had the coverage and devices to match it.
