Star Wars destroyer droids and Metroid morph balls might be beyond modern technology, but their basic trappings are within reach. Norwegian engineer Kåre Halvorsen built this robot sphere in his spare time, with six retractable, expanding legs that let it dance when it's not rolling. Well, technically, it doesn't roll quite yet, as the prototype's 25 servo motors haven't been programmed to do that, but Halvorsen says that's next. Then, we just need a few propellers, some hydraulic jumping legs and a smartphone app to control it, and we'll be in business.

just wondering, what would need to be done from an engineering standpoint to make it able to roll?
Posted on Dec 11, 2011 | 3:35 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
From the looks of it, it’ll just need the programming to have the legs push off in a specific direction and then keep the momentum going as it rolls.

Im guessing it would not be able to maintain that kind of momentum for long, would there be a way to sustain that motion internally?

That thing is straight out of Aperture Labs. All they need to do now is give it a cute/creepy voice.

If you like that then you have to check out the A-Pod by Zenta.
In fact the world of this type of electronic art is addictive.
