Apple just announced that 100 million apps have been downloaded from the Mac App Store, in little less than a year of operation — it launched on January 6th and sold a million apps in just 24 hours, as well as a million copies of Lion in just a single day. It's impressive growth but still basically spare change next to the iOS App Store, which hit 100 million apps downloaded in just under two months of operation and now moves a billion apps a month with some 18 billion total apps downloaded. Even still, we're sure Apple's quite happy running two successful app stores — and quite happy to set a high bar for Microsoft to hit when it launches the Windows Store next February.

How coincidental that this would be released right in the same week Android is in the limelight for its 10 billion android app downloads. Good game Apple, good game!

Dude, it’s Mac not iTunes app store.

as a mass reply to all replied, I never said it was relevant to iOS. I’m just saying that Google is in the news with its milestone, now Apple are also releasing a milestone. Ignore the fact its android or mac or iOS, I am just stating the 2 companies releasing 2 milestones at a similar time.
Nor am I conspiring against Apple, its good advertising that’s all I’m saying. Don’t be so quick to pounce, take a deep breath and calm down!

I can agree somewhat with your argument. That said, it comes off far more like you’re looking for anything that is about Apple vs Google.
If you’re arguing that this is Apple’s intent then it is a poor one. It only brings further attention to Android’s numbers which are far higher than the Mac App Store.. If anything this press release is about how Apple is proving that a curated app environment is preferred by most people.

I’m really not trying to force a comparison between Google and Apple on purpose, it just so happens they are the 2 that have released milestone news recently.
Of course, the release is related to their pushing of a preferred app environment as you say, and that’s easily the way we can see most companies heading in (e.g. Windows Store). I disagree that this could spin them in a negative light however when compared to Androids recent release, as Google are saying they’ve had 10 bill totaled, whereas Apple are saying they’ve hit record downloads in a single year. I guess it depends how its read?
Thank you for replying in a constructive and reasonable fashion and not just getting all hot headed, its refreshing to see!

“I’m just saying that Google is in the news with its milestone”
It is? First I heard of it was when you mentioned it here. Not to mention that the two milestones have little in common; this Apple milestone was announced because its gasp talking about 1 years worth of app sales.

It is isn’t it. It doesn’t make me unbiased however, it’s just a picture, seeing as I currently use an Android. Glad to hear your not upset.

Well Apple hit the 10 billion apps downloaded long before this so what exactly is your point? That Apple rained in on Google’s parade by mentioning app downloads in a completely different product and OS? Would you stop crying if Google mentioned the number of app downloads for Chrome? Let alone Amazon gives free apps away every day.

Repeat yourself cause all i see are your little troll replies. Is your acne ridden face boiling up with anger because Apple released their numbers the same time Google did?
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 7:36 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
You’re suggesting that Apple has control over what people are buying on the Mac App Store, and controlled the purchases to such a degree that the 100 million milestone came at exactly the same time as Android’s milestone.
Do I really need to point out how incredibly stupid that is?
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 2:47 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Do you really think I suggested they released this milestone on the exact moment of the 100 millionth download?
I said it was a coincidence, and a happy one at that for Apple. That doesn’t mean I am suggesting it was fabricated, nor does that mean a coincidence is always a conspiracy.
Coincidence: A remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without apparent causal connection.
I would prefer you just ask me to clarify the meaning of my message, which I have done above, instead of trying to look cool. Thanks.

Here is what you said:
Yes, I know what a coincidence is. Your post looks like SARCASM. Are you really happy for Apple in this context? You, who has an Android icon for an avatar? Maybe you can explain your “good game Apple” comment, because the only reason somebody would say that in this context is if they’re insinuating Apple had some control over when they hit that milestone.
It looks to me like you’re just backpedaling because you know you suggested something very, very stupid. The only alternative is that you were not being sarcastic and were actually being serious, in which case it’s still a stupid comment because you’re congratulating Apple on something they had no control over, in the context of the timing of theirs and Android’s milestones.
Maybe you should work on making comments that are better thought out. If all you wanted to do was congratulate Apple, how hard would it have been to just say “Congrats Apple, that’s a lot of Mac app sales”?
See, the fact that YOU are tying Apple’s milestone to Android’s is why we are having this conversation. Next time, try not doing that.

I was saying it was a coincidence for Apple for this to happen. My reference to “Good game Apple” is just a figure of speech and a light hearted joke, I’m sorry you thought I was digging at Apple but in fact as I said, it was a joke. Its obvious Apple have no control over how many downloads they have, that would be ridiculous.
It’s true, my post could look misleading, clearly my British humor is lost to a lot of people. I can’t and won’t change who I am for you or anyone else here. Now please just accept that I was making a very small joke regarding the circumstances of this situation, I meant no harm.
FYI, Just because I have an Android Avatar doesn’t make me a troll. Don;t just assume that every comment on this place is trolling, I am very open to all brands of technology depending on what suits my style best at the time of release. I am not going to just post happy style comments to avoid people disagreeing with me.
As I said above, instead of kicking off about it, just ask me to clarify. Not everyone is a troll and its horrible to see that people can so quickly judge a person…
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 5:09 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Instead of asking you to clarify, how about you simply write things that are clear to begin with? That would avoid a lot of back and forth.
And please note that I am not “judging a person”, I took you to task on specifically what you said in the context of everything involved – your avatar, the oddness of your comment and the fact that you brought the coincidental timing into it.
For what it’s worth, I love British humor.

Troll smited. Well played. These Android fanboys seem to have nothing better to do than go in Apple articles and spread their nonsense. AHH Apple released their figures for how many apps were sold on Macs the same time Google did! It’s a conspiracy!

Do you even know what a troll is, because you are kind of being a troll here, I am actually constructing posts that are thought out and trying to cool off the situation, in no way am i inflaming the situation. You are the problem here.

Well I hope my points were cleared up for you on my replied. I have apologized for the confusion you received, I cant really do much more. When I made the comment, the humor was blatant to me, clearly now I see there are a numb er of ways this can be misconstrued, hence my apology. I cant really say much more, except I would appreciate you no tell me to “write things that are clear to begin with”, because as i said, it was clear to me, everyone slips up in their wording once every so often. I am only human after all! You will just have to trust that my intent was purely innocent and I am not trying to drop on Apple. As I said, I appreciate all technology for its features, and I utilize whatever suits me at the time.
For what its worth, I am glad you like British humor, its very under-appreciated and it tears me up inside when my terrible British jokes go unnoticed!

I’ve bought quite a few.
One beef I do have is that you cant go from a disc bought version to the apstore version without re-buying. I did it with Pixelmator as I’d only paid $12 for it in Amazon’s sale (and I think it is probably the best value software out there!) but I’m a little more relucant with Aperture and iWork

It depends on the developer, a couple have given me promo codes to download the app for free (after confirming I’ve bought it already) but very few do this.

If you check with boxed software, write to the developer site, you can click update in your boxed software and get the updates.

I’ve actually discovered many cool apps on the Mac App Store and even paid for some I wouldn’t have otherwise. The Apple ecosystem is a real benefit. I like not having to use Paypal (which I’m ditching because I can’t be bothered to send in my ID and bills to unlimit my account) or give my credit card out to so many companies when I already have an Apple ID which I trust more.
