We did it again, people: we had a show. On Friday night, Joshua, Nilay, Paul, and Joanna gathered in front of a live, studio audience and had a grand old time. Special guest John Gruber sat down with Josh for an in-depth interview about the tech industry and the future of Apple, Joanna showed Josh a few ways to make Windows more tolerable, Josh got an exclusive look inside Microsoft Research, and Paul shared tales of adventure beyond the studio. And that's just scratching the surface — there's much more in season 1, episode 2 of On The Verge.

I have to say, I watched this hoping to be surprised about what kind of guy he is, but i’m unfortunately not surprised. He’s awkward, thinks of the world only in right/wrong, and takes personal pleasure is pointing out when other people are wrong.

My video is still loading, but from his blog I’ve never read anything at all that wasn’t supported by facts or, when it was just an opinion/hunch, that at least didn’t make sense.
Maybe one of you two can point out exactly what the problem is? Or maybe you are butthurt because he’s not shy about bashing people who purposefully misguide others?

I feel the dude is a regular blogger & doesn’t deserve the attention he receives anymore than I do with www.crazydopetastic.com or any other blogger sharing opinions or “facts” of their own. The interview, for me, proved he’s an overhyped, insecure, narrow-minded, condescendingly decent blogger. I was hoping for more & got less than my low expectations.

I’d go out on a limb and say Daring Fireball is a better blog or publication than what you have going there.

I’d agree at this point, being that I’ve been around for ohhh 3/4 months, but it takes nothing away from how I think he comes across as an individual & how I feel his blog is merely decent.

Not my take-away at all. He’s a big apple fan. I didn’t find him obnoxious about it. I’ve been reading his blog for the last few days and although he definitely gets slightly nasty about non-apple products sometimes, it’s not over-the-top, IMO. No better or worse than the android fans I see and read.

The Verge is full of differing views from the various writers and it doesn’t seem to be a problem. I think in this case, it has more to do with the way Gruber expresses his views. Personally, I find it to be more than a little bit obnoxious.

According to JG everyone Apple does is 100% correct 100% of the time. Everything everyone else does is 100% wrong 100% of the time. The problem is once you get the pattern, you don’t actually need to read his blog to know what his opinion will be on any given subject – just think ‘Apple good, rest bad’ and fill in the blanks yourself.
If I wanted to know why every single decision Apple make is so flawless I would subscribe to the Apple PR feed. His blog is well written, with well reasoned arguments, but if every single posting can be boiled down to ‘Apple good, other bad’ I have to wonder what is the point. I suspect he is mainly preaching to the converted as anyone who actually values a genuinely critical opinion will be looking elsewhere (here?).

damn…
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 7:25 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
This is ridiculous and I’m tired of seeing this opinion perpetrated. He’s just as quick to point out when Apple stuff fails to hit the high standards he holds them to as he is to point out when Apple succeeds. He’s also just as quick to point out competitors doing work he likes.
If his only opinion is that Apple’s competitors are 100% wrong all of the time, then how do you explain his positive entries regarding Windows Phone 7? For example:
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/11/17/nokia-lumia-
or
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/11/30/gold-lumia
As for the claim that Apple is 100% right, all of the time – well, you should probably take another look at some of his writing and you’ll realize that simply isn’t true. Consider this lengthy piece (pre-iCloud):
http://daringfireball.net/2011/04/cutting_that_cord
- He first outlines the major issue: Apple is behind when it comes to cloud technology. He then proceeds to explore various problems that Apple will have to find answers for before they can catch up to speed. The piece is critical of Apple’s status regarding the cloud, but doesn’t come across as overwhelmingly negative because it constructively explores the issue.
For another random example, consider this link to a negative piece about Final Cut Pro X:
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/06/24/harrell-fcpx
- Now, he did a number of posts about Final Pro X, which is particularly interesting to consider in light of the rampant “Gruber is an Apple fanboy” claims. Searching through his posts on the topic shows that he linked to a number of positive pieces about the software and a number of negative pieces. He never really writes about the software from a first person perspective, however, as he’s not a professional video editor. The closest thing to an opinion that he writes is that he predicts it will take a two year transitional period for the software to catch up to the needs of professionals. He also notes in another post that perhaps Apple should drop ‘pro’ from the title. Rather than jump on the negative bandwagon or jump to praise the software, he stays relatively neutral with describing the situation the way he sees it: Final Cut Pro X is a ground-up rewrite that over the next few years should restore the missing features from Final Cut Pro 7. (He also talks about how pulling Final Cut Pro 7 off the shelves was arrogant in The Talk Show podcast about FCPX. Clearly, he was right, as Apple would put FCP7 back up for sale a few weeks later.) Probably the clearest articulation of this can be found here:
http://daringfireball.net/2011/06/final_cut_pro_x_backlash
He’s also critical of Apple’s skeuomorphic design choices:
http://daringfireball.net/linked/2011/10/26/against-skeuomorphism
I also think a lot of people mistake him trying to explain how unpopular Apple decisions make sense from an Apple perspective as John Gruber irrationally believes Apple is infallible.

Textbook example of a straw man. You obviously have never read DF, or you would possibly say that. I don’t always agree with Gruber, but between him and Jim Dalrymple’s site, they pretty much have the corner on good Mac analysis with an opinion.
Posted on Dec 13, 2011 | 2:13 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Gruber is a mess in that he’s a defective human being that often gets cited as a news source.
- He says in the show that there is only right or wrong (and no room for in-between)
- He claims to be unaware of peoples opinions of him.
- He does use “facts” and diligent research to back up his opinion but when his facts fall through he rarely offers retractions
- His articles tend to be more about misdirection by laser focusing primarily on single negatives rather than the overall product/person in question
- He has a controversial site where he refuses to allow comments to ensure he remains unaware of other opinions or disputed truth
Dont get me wrong. Im an apple fan/user so i enjoy reading Apple opinions and expect them to be slanted. But I find that he doesnt deserve the attention he gets from the media and especially on the verge.
Posted on Dec 29, 2011 | 8:42 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
well.. it depends on how you define the term fanboy.. that’s exactly what he said.. he defines it as someone who blindly praises everything a company does.. and gruber does not do that.. he criticizes apple when he doesn’t like something.. it just does not happen all that often.. but that’s his personal taste.. and when he writes something about them.. as others have pointed out, it is backed by facts or labeled as speculation.. of course you can not go to his blog to get an objective view of the technology world.. but he never wanted to offer that.. so if you don’t like his opinion or style.. just don’t read his stuff..

After watching, I’m a bit surprised Gruber admitted that he thought Windows Phone was “interesting”. From what I gather, he’s a bit dumbfounded that Android is considered more popular than Windows Phone.
However, it’s pretty obvious that market forces are at work here, because Windows Phone is a more locked down experience than Android. Microsoft has certain rules about “crapware” on Android, especially considering it can be easily installed with one click.
Posted on Dec 15, 2011 | 2:10 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
There is little evidence that openness is the main cause of Android’s success. Microsoft’s negative image for Windows might be a much bigger factor to be honest.

Torrent is by far, FAR, the most effective way. How is it NOT an option.
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 3:29 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Because torrents don’t download the thing sequentially, which means I need to wait until it has finished downloading 100% of content.
I want streaming, and Youtube or others could handle the load just fine (Even though I think this player looks nicer!).
I agree that torrents should be provided as well, for those folks that don’t want to stream. It’s definitely the best and cheapest solution for non-streaming downloads. And is complimentary to the streaming solutions.

I see what you tried to do there with Gruber. Unfortunately, Gruber was dull, and insufferable. I applaud Josh, and the crew. You tried your hardest to crack that nut, and get him to say something controversial…he just wasn’t interesting enough.

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 7:30 PM EST reply Recommend (6) Flag actions
You’re praise of tech bloggers is a bit misguided. Sure, I think Josh and the others are doing an excellent job with The Verge, and I guess some people like John Gruber, but they are just tech bloggers. I mean, it’s really weird to me that someone like Dennis Ritchie can pass away without people really noticing it but at the same time people are cheerleading articles about the possibility of a greater resolution display on the next iPhone. But I guess “influential” and “knowledgeable” are relative terms.
Posted on Dec 14, 2011 | 9:23 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
And again, this wasn’t meant to crap all over tech bloggers, because I come here and read articles and reviews with great interest (and everything holds a level of quality that I have seen very few places else), but I think fans of this business could use some perspective.
Posted on Dec 14, 2011 | 9:26 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
In case you have trouble parsing the English language, “Knowledgeable”, “influential”, and “insightful” modify “tech bloggers”. I.E. that’s the domain I was addressing. Whether you think “tech bloggers” are important or not is irrelevant, I said nothing about them relative to any other group.
Posted on Dec 15, 2011 | 10:52 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
(Or to state it more clearly, knowledgeable, influential, and insightful apply to Josh and John within the domain of tech bloggers. At no time did I praise ‘tech bloggers’ as a group, which polter claims)

The LG Prada’s diaper doesn’t mean much. It’s different, and the innovation Apple took part in wasn’t focused on the dialer. It’s not the home of new ideas.
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 9:53 PM EST via mobile reply Recommend (6) Flag actions
no one cares about the dialer. you missed the point.
Posted on Dec 13, 2011 | 3:39 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Then why show us the dialer? The only major similarity is the dialer and the touchscreen.
Posted on Dec 15, 2011 | 11:17 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Apple’s interface is much more refined and was announced just a few months after so it’s obvious they were working on a touch screen phone long before as well. Eg. With the Prada, scrolling through lists was done with a scrollbar.
However, kudos to LG for making the first all-touch phone but it’s a shame they aren’t doing much these days.
Posted on Dec 13, 2011 | 3:07 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I’m gonna go out on a limb here: is there more to a smartphone than the dialer screen?
If you were looking for an aspect of the OS, where these two look similar, you still haven’t found it.

im not starting a flame war, my post was to illustrate the ridiculousness of referencing pre-iphone android sets and saying “look what they looked like BEFORE the iphone” as if that’s supposed to mean anything.
also in 8/10 situations, its not the software similarities people are referencing, but things like the all-touchscreen capacitive front.

no harm, anyone will agree apple has done great things in terms of innovation and no one can take that away from them. along with that, Android is very innovative as well and will be pressing on for the foreseeable future. i think if we had one with out the other, the innovation would be much slower and we wouldn’t be where we are today.

They used that above platform for the HTC Snap, lol. The iPhone pushed Android to do better.

I feel this was far more interesting than bringing a so called “Sprint CEO” for instance, and was much more engaging. I mean, this was extremely capturing. There weren’t moments were you would go like, “just go already” as it would be by bringing boring people into the mix.
My advice, make sure you bring other engaging people like him. I agree that Gruber is an avid Apple lover. However, bringing more design oriented people or very interesting people into this will be extremely interesting, People like Matt on the last episode are great too. How about bring Dan Benjamin? Or the Kevin Rose? Opinionated people always make good for conversation. Because, often times you don’t want a static show as it would be by bringing someone from General Motors where innovation has stagnated in time for our tastes.

You guys turned out a really excellent show.
The hour and thirty-three minute length was of satisfying duration. (I’ll admit, I wouldn’t be complaining if it had been longer; owing to an engaging interview with Gruber, and a general enjoyment of your public personas.) That said, I believe you-all found a nice balance. The whole production was just long enough.
Side note: I was already an enjoyer of “Daring Fireball”, and Gruber’s presence on “The Talk Show”, this interview strengthened that. I had been wondering how ‘present’ he would come off in a direct visual medium – largely because of the lackadaisical tone set by Dan Benjamin on “The Talk Show”. Low and behold, there is some animate-energy there. Double thumbs up to him.
Not that anyone asked, but I give episode 2 an unsolicited “A”.
(Slight points shaved, for a bit too much camera movement during the interview… and perhaps a tighter shot on Gruber would have been in order – to crop out his busy foot :)

I agree, this was a major improvement from the first episode. A nice length (could even be longer) and plenty of interesting topics and segments. I began to appreciate this as the interview progressed, rather than simply blurting out what he thought of at the time he instead gave it a deep explanation on what he was thinking. Obviously in a social setting it would be weird but that’s not what this was, it was an interview on a quite controversial writer so missteps was something he was most likely trying to avoid.

Not sure if i should comment on the show itself here or post some mindless bullshit about Gruber but i will anyway.
I watch TV, a lot of TV. Here in the UK we have some decent original programming, but nothing really does the trick for me for technology newstainment since they ditched Tomorrows World years and years ago. I’m sure other brits will agree Click and The Gadget Show are pretty bad.
Then the engadget show appeared, pretty good i thought but it wasn’t all i wanted from a Technology TV show (For the pedants im aware it isn’t on TV but i watch it on my TV so, stick it up your arse)
Anyway, what im trying to say is On the Verge is really really good. Right balance of news/humour without it being boring, if anything you could geek it up a bit more, but its your call. (Maybe the occasional TNG reference? LCARS? No, ok sorry) So keep up the good work.*

Look at the camera more. Tighten up moments of silence, at least in the edited version. Paul Millers video was a bit too goofy and less informative. I feel there was a missed opportunity with the trip to Microsoft, you really could’ve been less funny. When you’re going down news, try to assign a story to one person at a time to keep the focus moving. That Apple suggestion photoshops was too long of a segment for a single joke, could at least had a more elaborate conclusion. The New Thing feature is kind of ridiculous, you might as well add those lesser stories into the news section. The DJ is great, but his timing needs to be faster. And finally, there was no conclusion to the show, it needs a better exit. Otherwise-

I own a Windows Phone and think I would have noticed if Josh had been negative on it. Quite the opposite, Josh comes off to me as positive on Windows Phone in general and especially on Metro UI
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 10:56 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
I was more speaking of the general direction of Microsoft as a whole. Josh has never hid his feelings on MS. Some of it’s warranted but I would like to think he’s open to a company getting their act together.
Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 11:00 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Notice the difference? Gruber hate MS, he hates copycats. All ‘artists’ should think this way. Creativity is great. P. Diddy ripping off Sting or Led Zeppelin isn’t. Android is just fake iOS, that basically took off because Apple was ‘stuck’ on a single carrier in the US.

I’m guessing there was supposed to be a ’doesn’t’ in there? As in ‘Gruber doesn’t hate MS’?
Posted on Dec 13, 2011 | 6:15 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
He was right though on how the “Windows” brand is slowing the adoption rate of WP7, its just not considered cool any more so doesn’t get as much as a look in as other phones. Not saying Microsoft should ditch the Windows brands but it’s certainly holding them back. I mean Windows Box instead of Xbox? I can’t help but feel that it would have completely failed if they named it that.

Yo Willy, your reply makes no sense. Where do I mention Google?
My comment is in relation to the “Show” and an observation that Gruber is essentially an Apple fan boy, secondly i’m saying the guys did a good job in producing the show with my highlight being the Microsoft site visit.
So no clue what you are talking about!
Posted on Dec 13, 2011 | 8:54 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Replied from a phone with more typos than correct words, sorry. What I was trying to say was he doesn’t only like Apple. He gave due credit to WP7 and Microsoft because he thinks it’s good, but not to google, (which I can guess you probably prefer by your hate for Gruber), because he doesn’t like it. Gruber is a fanboy of quality, which Apple seems to care quite a bit about, and it’s why he likes them so much.
Posted on Dec 13, 2011 | 1:33 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Ok now you make sense – But to be clear, I have no hate for Gruber, was just an observation of him whilst on the show, almost forced by Josh to show some credit to anyone other than Apple.
In regards to quality, I have been an iOS user since the original iPhone (2007) and appreciate Apple hugely, I don’t think anyone disputes they bring quality to the market, but I think players like Google have really upped their game with the Galaxy Nexus and Android 4.0 ICS. I have one as well as an Apple device and am hugely impressed.
Posted on Dec 14, 2011 | 8:30 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I like ICS as well and am surprised that Gruber doesn’t like it more, but I think that’s just because he hasn’t used it really yet.
But I only think he was reluctant to credit google with innovation, not anything non-apple.

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 | 8:55 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Yeah, it felt at points he was just trying to get back at Gruber for calling him out in the past at points.
Posted on Dec 14, 2011 | 1:06 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Actually I thought the interview was great — Gruber could keep his current thought going while Josh was still trying to crack wise, and Josh could pull Gruber back to points he wasn’t so keen on. I would have been surprised if Josh didn’t bring past article vs. article disagreements up, since they play out so much more interestingly face-to-face.
My complaint really is with how he handles those who are obviously less confident than he is at presenting, so he over compensates by dominating the conversation instead of allowing them to find their voice.
He seems to quite often fall into the trap of asking something, then (possibly unknowingly) following up with statements that pretty much leave the other with nothing left to say. I think it’s a fear of silence from the other that seems to spur him to fill the void, but the consequence is the silence just perpetuates and he has to keep saying more to fill it. A good presenter doesn’t fear silence.
I’m exaggerating of course, and time and experience will solve it (the problem is more evident in episode 001) but I think it’s important to bring up.

I think he meant it more as a shot against Android, actually. It makes sense to me. I can’t see why the average, non-tech savvy consumer would pick Android over WP7 as most of Android’s strengths are lost on them and most of WP7’s strengths would benefit them. I think part of it has to do with Android being an established brand now, but if you were to give them both the same start, I think WP7 would come out on top with consumers.
Although, Josh’s is right in that WP7 was probably hurt by the Windows name. That and Microsoft’s awful marketing of the product.

Apple stores are incredibly low pressure sales environments, and they’re also pleasant spaces to be in so they’re something of a refuge on the high street.
They also manage to turn those high numbers of visitors into impressively high sales figures, with industry leading revenue/square foot.

I don’t think many people understand the importance of this. Being in an Apple Store doesn’t necessarily make it seem like you’re actually shopping. You’re just playing with cool stuff that happens to be available for purchase.

I find it interesting that you both make a big deal about the introduction of the first iPhone. That unveil was truly unique and unlike any subsequent event. It was a mixture of humor, seriousness and competitive flare — something that I feel is missing from recent Apple unveils. Ironically, something that I think Google has done a better job doing with Android. I also found interesting that you emphasized that the singular phrase to hallmark that release… that Jobs remarked at the iPhone being 5 years ahead of any smartphone. That was back in 2007. Four years later, he’s still right. Android (and others) are still catching up to the iPhone in facility and overall experience. Some may argue that they’re closer than ever. Again, interestingly, though, in those four years, iOS hasn’t changed much. Perhaps, Jobs was prophesying the state of iOS and the competition. 2012 might be the year that Android finally catches up and surpasses iOS. Or, on the five year anniversary, iOS6 and the iPhone 5 will revolutionize the world again! The half-decade mark is going to be tell-tale. For the pro-Jobs camp, who believe that he has never led them wrong, this might be a hallmark 2012 for the mobile industry.

The Verge guys (and gals),
I love the new site and show. While the site is a ball-buster to load on older machines, I can live with it. However, I do agree with others that you might want to consider maybe 3 versions of the show’s file to download (sort of like Revision3’s programs). With their shows I am viewing their “Large” MP4 option (I believe just one under their HD option), It still looks great on a big screen TV via PS3 but easier on the bandwidth (< 300 MB per 30-40 min episodes). Besides, with all the ISP’s capping our bandwidth now we’ll all soon be counting our bits and bytes.
Keep up the great work—you are on “The Verge” of excellence!

And the New Thing segment? Keep that going, it’s light and allows for items that might not otherwise get a mention. I mean, come on, flying sharks? Who doesn’t want one of those.

Grubber was amazing, great interview. I thought it would be a 4 or 5 min interview like some of the interviews on late night TV shows but 30 mins in the interview I was really impressed. You guys just keep packin’ them in punch after punch. Keep it up. And nice touch adding joana to the new things segament. The new things are not that interesting though. I liked Niley’s

That interview felt like Josh was trying his hardest to make Gruber say something controversial for 45 minutes.

gruber has little substance or depth. has he ever even written a book?

An interesting interview that didn’t really reveal that much I didn’t already know about John Gruber. He’s an interesting man for sure, but Joshua Topolsky seriously needs to stop interrupting his guests when they’re talking! Every now and then with a quip maybe but it’s a pattern and he needs to work on it. Despite that, it was a good interview.

i was thinking the same about his interruptions. considering that this wasn’t his first or second show in his life he should know better by now. also i don’t need that “late night talk show” kind of theme.
at engadget they had a real roundtable where each staff member was treated equally as it now has become a host-guest situation.

I enjoyed the first show but this one was boring to be honest. I got bored during the John Gruber interview, the audience seemed bored as well and the format generally is just way too similar to how it was at Engadget. In fact it’s Engadget in all but name. It needs to be freshened up in my opinion because keeping most of the same personalities again and bringing them over will only keep the video show interesting for so long. And better guests are needed. Hate to be critical but it’s just my opinion…

hilarious how gruber tries to qualify himself as an author because he has written in email double the number of words of an average book. josh called him out by asking the rhetorical "it (your email) wasn’t a narrative, was it?… lulz

Huh? John wasn’t saying that writing so many words made him an “author”, he was just saying that he’d written a lot and was getting better at it. Christ.

Exactly as I expected. Gruber confirms he is a shallow, non-accommodating, biased hack and to top it all – is proud about it. Seriously what’s this guy’s age – after gathering life experiences, looking and learning around even a less able human being learns to broaden perspective. Just sad that Gruber is stuck in his definitions of right and wrong concerned with friggin pieces of ever obsoleting technology that exists to make money to friggin pieces of $CORPs.

Also a big Talk Show fan… John found it ironic that, after being called a fanboy a few times by Josh (an Apple fanboy), Josh cut to a tour of the Apple Store, and then a segment about how Josh hates Windows and will never use it unless the UI is modded, etc. It’s obvious that people with taste prefer a certain fruit company, what’s not clear is why the hell Josh is calling out—- oh right, to appease the Android guys. That kinda makes sense. Misleading and totally lame, but, okay.

Really great show ! I loved John’s segment .. team of Josh, paul, Nilay and Joanna on the show is the killer combo! … I think Joanna added a nice zing to the entire show. I hope she gets to talk more Windows. Nilay on Apple, Joanna on Windows and Josh on his Android thing or whatever …

What an accessibility #FAIL on so many levels…. it was not captioned for the deaf and hard of hearing. Its not like I just sit in my wet diapers and wait for someone to entertain me, It is not hard to caption a show… especially for a bunch of geeks… i mean, seriously. The Verge is supposed to be about the latest, greatest cutting edge stuff, yet their social accessibility attitude sucks all the way back to Helen Keller times. Maybe itll change if perhaps Topolsky wakes up one morning and cant hear… thats what it takes to get shit done, either that, or judicial avenues, but the Verge is in clear violation of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1992. Period.

Why do I have the feeling that 95% of the people above calling Gruber a fanboy in a pejorative sense are at least equally bad “never gonna touch an Apple gadget” Android fanboys themselves? Way to go, double standards.
The show was great, more power to the verge!

@Joanna Stern; Sry to be late on this, but WOOOOOHHHHHHH ! ! ! you can borrow a windows dvd from anyone and use your license on the bottom of you laptop and if you don’t have a friend with a copy you can LEGALLY download a torrent file of a retail copy of Windows, or give them $10 and they will mail you one or give you’re laptop manufacture $10 and they will mail you one. The important part is the key at the bottom, there is NO reason to go out and buy a $120 copy of windows when you have a license already. Plus nicer systems come with a clean copy of windows.
I love the work and reviews tho :-)
Just want to add, if you get the dvd from the manufacturer they usually give you the drivers specific for your system as well :-) so you won’t have to go driver hunting on there web site.

The fact that he doesn’t “get” Facebook is a narrow-minded view for someone who is supposed to have valuable insights into new technology and the mainstream. It’s like Rubenstein refusing to ever use an iPhone.

Wow – what can I say?
It’s been a while since I’ve been that excited to watch something, and be so disappointed. The host of this show is so interested in one thing – pandering to his audience. He walks in a cool new building and could really show us some amazing things that are going on in Microsoft – and uses every opportunity to a) display his painted on jeans and b) interrupt the tour guide with meaningless “jokes”.
Then he has one one of the most successful writers of our time on, and seeks to defame him with this dismissive “fanboy” tag. Then, he persists on being an apologist for Google throughout the show.
I know – the vast majority of the audience would rather have something “edgy” than informative, but I thought these writers were better than this.

After watching the full episode it is a bit disappointing that Joshua attacked Grubber, the question “so, why are you not a fanboy?” is really not the kind of question do make to a guest. Besides that, it was a great show, thanks.

does the iTunes download really need to be 1.4 gb?
episode #1 was 850+mb.
Sure would be nice if you compressed those a little bit more.
