Starting today, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be available to first- and business-class passengers on a number of American Airlines international and domestic flights as an option for in-flight entertainment. The Galaxy Tab will replace current entertainment systems and be loaded with 70 movies, plus unspecified TV and music options; the airline also plans to bring more content to the Galaxy Tab, including Wi-Fi, games, and reading material. American Airlines is claiming it's the first domestic airline to offer a "branded" tablet to passengers (though its pilots will have iPads in the cockpit as soon as this Friday).
There are a few catches, most notably the fact that the Tab is running a specialized interface apparently designed by American Airlines — everything but what the airline wants you to see will be locked behind this skin. Initially, the Galaxy Tab will be available on domestic flights in and out of New York (JFK), Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, and San Francisco; it'll also be available on some international flights to South American or Europe (we assume those departing from the aforementioned cities). We're looking forward to the first report of a passenger rooting this device mid-flight.

I’m curious to see what this is costing AA and what they’re doing to promote it.
With all the financial problems in the airline industry, it seems like an odd move. People in first and business class already have such devices on hand, or they have work to do. This would be better (maybe) for coach passengers.

I’m guessing Samsung gave them a boatload of money to do it.

you mean a boatload of money in the form of tablets? I’m sure Samsung just gave AA however many tablets they wanted.
What better way to advertise their product than placing it in front of a consumer who can’t go anywhere except down (30,000 feet) for 3-18 hours?

I’m not sure since these tablets seems to run a custom UI (not stock Android or TouchWiz) so except if there is a huge Samsung logo on it, customers won’t notice it’s a Samsung…
… most of them will probably think it’s the next iPad :$

Most people already think it’s an iPad :-P

Do most of them live in your head? It must be crowded there.

Most of them appear to live in Samsung’s legal team, unfortunately.

The better question is… How much will they make. Bussiness flights and First Class have been loosing customers… this may bring some of them back. Specially if you have kids, first class seems much more compelling.

Not mention that they will be retiring the maintnance of expensive custom software and equipment on their seats.
WHERE IS THE EDIT BUTTON!

I don’t think you’re going to upgrade your flight just because they have a tablet screen included and not a screen in the back of the seat in front. You probably have your own tablet, or laptop with you anyway. This is just Samsung offloading some stock. Good move.

I’d say it’s much cheaper than replacing their old entertainment systems.

This time there’s no excuse for the stewardesses to pretend they don’t know what “airplane mode” is.

Hmm, a Honeycomb tablet? So it should roughly be about as responsive as their current in-flight touchscreens? Maybe a little less.

it would be interesting if the flight attendant made someone who brought their own galaxy tab turn it off, but didnt care that these were on

what are you talking about? The airlines ones would turn off as well.

… because they couldn’t afford ipads ;)
sums up the android tablet market, really.

Seeing as the Samsung Galaxy Tab costs exactly the same amount as the iPad, you are not just a troll but ignorant. Not a good combo.

yea the same msrp but you can get them far cheaper.
Posted on Dec 14, 2011 | 10:40 PM EST reply Recommend (3) Flag actions
you can get one for $350 new or $310 refurbished.

But do you think the commenter I replied to knew that?
There are Android tabs that are much cheaper than the iPad, and you’re right you can get a Galaxy Tab for cheaper. But the SGT10.1 is officially the same price, so the comparison is ignorant.

Do you think AA went out and bought these tablets at retail store? Now that’s ignorant.

the pilots are getting ipads.

Wonder how much customization can be done on ipads. We’re talking a bit more than just changing a wallpaper. But i guess your little iBrain(Siri) couldn’t come up with a better suggestion (pun intended to iFans, not regular iDevice owners). Go and change the order of the app launchers icons if that makes you feel like a mod.
Also as stated, price hardly got much to do with it since they’re pretty similar. Also, i doubt that an airline would pay full price when we are talking about a BIG amount of tablets. Heck a good businessman would be able to see this as marketing and simply give them for free.
Damn i hate fanbois from any camp.

Its a Tab because it can be skinned by AA, you fool.

Well if they crash on an island, good old Sayid will have plenty of electronics to fix the transmitter that is being blocked by the french womans signal thats been on the loop for 16 years.

I’m guessing this is why they chose the 10.1. Can’t exactly put a custom skin on the iPad.

The Galaxy Tab is for first class passengers only. Coach gets the iPad.

As soon as I read the headline, I thought "I want to fly AA (which I would never do without good reason) just to get a Galaxy Tab and root it. Then I read the orange text and was disappointed.
