There's a very good reason Amazon is blowing out the PowerShot S95 for just $229 as its Deal of the Day today: its successor — the S100 — is out. Be that as it may, the S95 is one of the consensus best pocket cams in recent memory thanks in no small part to its superb low-light performance, the innovative control ring around the lens, and a clean, simple, all-black design that fits just about anywhere. If you don't buy it at this crazy price, you probably either already own one, already have an S100, or don't take pictures. It's just that simple.

is it a ton better than my Powershot A640?

Yes

Depends: the 4s is ok in bright light: if you want crisp indoor or night time shots nothing else touchs the S95 in its size and price class. The S95 is a superb camera whilst the 4S is just great for a “Phone” . If you are totally satisfied with the I,ages the 4s creates then save you money. The S95 is really a pocket friendly replacement for a clunky DSLR. The S95 consistent produces much better images than any phone camera included the good one in the 4s

Depends. The canon is really good but I’d rather save up a bit and move onto the mirrorless cameras with bigger sensors unless you need the zoom. The image quality jump and especially the margin of control for depth of field are pretty significant over the S95.
On a related note my wife just ditched her mirrorless because she’s using her iPhone 4S most of time even though the mirrorless takes much better pictures. The 4S is “good enough” for her that it doesn’t warrant an extra camera and the added convenience is just too much for her. However your situation and needs might be completely different.

This is orders of magnitude better than even the iPhone 4S and GSII cameras. It’s actually kind of ridiculous how good it is given its size.

“If you don’t buy it at this crazy price, you probably either already own one, already have an S100, or don’t take pictures. It’s just that simple.”
I’ll go with option four. I have an iPhone 4S for when I want pictures and don’t care about the quality, and a Canon Rebel T2i for when I do. No way I’m carrying around a third camera…

Well, if you always have a bag with you of some kind (most men don’t), then this is a huge bump from your phone (I have the iPhone 4S, a Panasonic LX3, and Canon 5D Mk II).
the S95 is much closer to your T2i, then it is to your iPhone is terms of quality (depending on what you’re shooting, if you don’t pixel peep, you won’t be able to tell the difference)

This would have been a great cam to have while I was in NYC last week. That thing is tiny and powerful!

Thanks Chris, I had no idea I was buying a camera today. But there it is.

I had an old IXY DIGITAL 80 (ie japanese edition PowerShot SD630) that died about a year back. Haven’t gotten around to replacing it until now. Been wanting one ever sinc I read the S100 review :)

Is this much better than Panasonic’s Lumixes?
Posted on Dec 19, 2011 | 3:59 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
It’s like a DMC-LX5 but smaller and with no dedicated video button.
Posted on Dec 19, 2011 | 4:08 PM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
And no wide angle lens and shorter battery life and no zoom and focus in video (I think?)
Posted on Dec 19, 2011 | 4:26 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Don’t know about the battery life and video zoom/focus. I do like shooting at 24mm on the LX5, despite reviews saying it distorts too much.
Anyway, it seems to me that whichever is cheaper is the better buy.

I got the LX5 deal a couple of weeks ago. Sweet camera!

Gone, almost instantly. FFFUUUUU
Posted on Dec 19, 2011 | 4:24 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Nope. It was available since 12 AM PST and out of stock at around 1 PM PST. So I wouldn’t call that instantly (unlike last thanksgiving when it was sold for $299 at the old hen, it was sold out in 30 minutes at 3AM EST).

I really want to buy this because of how good it is, and the price. The problem is I have a Panasonic LX3, so the image quality is not better (smaller though).
I also have a 5D Mk II, but that’s not really the same thing :)
