13" MBA vs. 13" MBP

To start, I'm looking at...

A Macbook Pro 13" for $2,032 w/

  • 2.8GHz Dual-core Intel Core i7
  • 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM — 2x2GB (I'll upgrade to 8GB after the fact)
  • 256GB Solid State Drive
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000
  • SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
  • Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
  • AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Air / 13" MacBook Pro - Auto-enroll

Or, a Macbook Air 13" for $1,851 w/

  • 1.8GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7
  • 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
  • 256GB flash storage
  • Intel HD Graphics 3000
  • Keyboard (English) & User's Guide
  • AppleCare Protection Plan for MacBook Air / 13" MacBook Pro - Auto-enroll

With this computer I'll be traveling to Japan and teaching for a year, and this will be my primary computer, with which I'll be doing not only most of my work, but also just about everything else I need a computer for such as watching videos, playing simple games (TF2), and taking care of all of my social networking while overseas (such as using the Verge). The thing is, I also want this computer to be mobile, since I'd like to travel with it when I'm spending my free time traveling Japan.

So my question is, which Apple computer is a better choice for going abroad with for me? My primary concern is the weight of the computer and how that contrasts with the performance of the computer. With these goals in mind, I've selected the two setups that I listed above, and I'm wondering which would make more sense. I've selected the Air with its layout because it is very light and as powerful as it can be, while I've picked the Pro with its layout because the processor is a bit more powerful, I can have up to 8GBs of RAM, and I can afford loading it with a 256GB solid state hard drive.

I know these sorts of questions can seem inappropriate from one tech nerd to another, being that you don't know every aspect of what would be best for me, but I have really tried to list all that I can here that is weighing on my choice and I do not feel that I know enough about the comparison in performance to make a completely educated choice myself.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

Happy Holidays.
