I needed a very tiny laptop to carry around when being at university. Without question, the Air is a beautiful device with some compromises.
Design, keyboard and touchpad are exceptionally good as on all of Apples laptops. The display however is not that great. On my unit, the bottom of the display is slightly darker than the top. It doesn't bug me enough to get it replaced but it's definitely there. Also, the resolution of 1366 by 768 doesn't provide enough space, coming from a 1680x1050 resolution on the MacBook Pro.
I upgraded to 4 GB RAM and the 128 GB SSD and I get along very well. I do not keep any photos or music on this device, and now since iTunes Match is available the music part is not even a problem.
The performance is better than expected, the 1.6 GHz i5 handles most tasks without problems. I have not tested Photoshop on this machine and probably won't ever do that.
Having such a small device also means compromising on some parts. In this case it's the screen - mentioned before - and the battery life. Apple says on its website that it'll get you working for 5 hours and I do find that quite accurate.
