Amazon just announced that it sold more than a million Kindle devices per week throughout December — that includes the Kindle, Kindle Touch, and Kindle Fire tablet. As usual for Amazon, no specific numbers were given, but the company says the Fire remains its best-selling and most-wished-for item, marking some 13 weeks that the Android-powered seven-inch tablet has held the top spot. The other Kindles didn't do so badly either: the Kindle Touch and basic Kindle were the second and third best-selling products in December, respectively. Amazon's foray into self-publishing also continues to yield success, as the number one and number four best-selling Kindle books in 2011 were published independently by their authors using Kindle Direct Publishing. All in all, a stellar holiday for the Kindle family, but we'd still love to see some specific sales numbers at some point.
Kindle Fire remains Amazon's best-selling item, million Kindle per week sales continue

Yup, I knew these things would sell like hot cakes. Amazon is really onto something with their pricing and built in ecosystem.

Vague hotcakes with no specific numbers sold. In other words, not even close to the numbers that Apple is selling.

seriously, why do you have to make us all look bad trolling amazon like that?

I’ve never understood why Amazon doesn’t release any sales numbers on the Kindles – but they’ve been on a hugely upward trajectory.
They may not be selling as many as Apple – so what? They’re selling well, and that’s what matters. Amazon has probably taken a pretty good chunk of the tablet market, and that is something that can’t be said for pretty much anything that isn’t an iPad so far.

Most tech media and business analysts are not as reasonable as yourself. They might draw pie charts and line graphs. It would be proper mental.

I’m just a fan of the phrase “proper mental”.

That’s great for Amazon and Android but I don’t think any hotcakes shop has ever had a demand for millions of hotcakes haha, that would suck for them :-)
P.S. I work at a restaurant

You should consider getting VPN – there are a ton of providers that tunnel into the US and it’s useful for many things…

Install a Custom Rom or Google Apps on the stock rom! Then you can download from Android Market. Theres a great utility over at XDA forums!

I had ordered the Fire to replace my Kindle2 but cancelled. After owning another Android tablet (Acer A500), I realized I did not want a Kindle that needed recharging every day or two. I bought the Kindle Touch instead. I wanted a reader that was very light and I could pick up anytime and read (like a book) without the constant worry of charging. I was also very disappointed in the Android tablet experience compared to my iPad, especially considering my Android Market apps are no good on the Fire – the Android Market is missing.

If you cancelled your Fire order, how can you say the apps on the Fire aren’t good?
Just curious.

He was saying HIS android market apps are no good on the fire. He has already paid for them on the android market and doesn’t want to then pay for them again on the amazon market
Posted on Dec 29, 2011 | 10:40 AM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
think he was referring to how downloads to your Android device from the Android market won’t show up on the Fire since the Fire doesn’t associate with your Google account, not that the apps literally are no good. The Amazon Appstore ecosystem is still pretty weak, and mostly it’s a subset of the Android market.

Every week millions of people are disappointed that they didn’t buy a real tablet.

There are no people I know who have a Kindle and are disappointed.
Naturally being in the UK I don’t know anyone with a Fire, yet.

Really? Anybody who bought a Fire for themselves knew exactly what they were getting. Not everyone wants/needs what you need. As soon as my galaxy tab dies it’s replacement will be whatever version of the Fire is out.
Posted on Dec 29, 2011 | 11:14 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I’m not sure what’s more strange.. That you expect your galaxy tab to “die” any time soon, or that you’d want a kindle fire (with much less functionality) to replace it…

Every day, I’m happy that I have an inexpensive thing that does all I expect out of a tablet.

Every week millions of people are glad they didn’t overpay for what they are using as a consumption device. Now they just have to figure out what to do with the $300-400 they saved…

My tablet has replaced my laptop, what has your Kindle Fire replaced? An older kindle?
It’s all about perspective. I saved money by buying a tablet instead of a newer laptop. You saved money by buying a consumption device and not a tablet.
Posted on Dec 29, 2011 | 2:03 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
No one buys a Fire to replace a laptop, its entrainment device. Amazon doesn’t market it as a regular tablet so i don’t see people getting disappointed.
Yes, you can do everything on tablet that you can on a Fire but if all you want to do is watch movies and read books whats the point of spending $300 more?

Not true at all. I have a laptop for heavyhitting, plus an iPhone. My fire is perfect for couch surfing. (And writing comments) for 200 I am not thecleast bit dissapointed. In fact more impressed than I thought. The simple usability is fantastic, it doesn’t pretend to be anything else.

Wrong conclusion, Its decent spec at a competitive price.
Try getting hold of a HTC Flyer at £200 in the UK.
Posted on Dec 29, 2011 | 2:28 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
You get the Flyer and twiddle your thumbs cause theirs no site or app for android with all the movies, tv shows and books as Amazon.
Its not a price issue its a ease of getting content or ecosystem problem.

I am pleased with my Kindle Fire and look forward to installing Windows 8 on it when the beta is released. Until then it is a paperweight.

The pricing is what did it. 199 is probably a sweet spot for a lot of people, even if it isn’t the best tablet. Same for the e-ink kindles. 79 is pretty damn cheap. They must have worked on their supply chain. I don’t think they ever had them on backorder.

I was given a Fire for Christmas, I’m actually surprised how nice it is. Amazon did a good job.

I want the Kindle Fire very much! Played with the Kindle Touch and its nice. If the Fire is similar its a great device!

Honestly, the fire is quite good and I’m used to using an iphone 4S. If you disable accelerated page loading and change loading flash to on demand the browser loads very quickly. Actually I find the 7" form to be really comfortable and it’s really fun to read magazines and books on. My BIGGEST complaint about it is that 480p is the max resolution for video and that netflix is totally broken and unusable on it. If they sort those issues out it’s honestly a steal at 199

I purchased 7 Kindle’s for Christmas. I kept 1 for myself (the Fire). The others were all e-ink readers.
I have enjoyed my Fire so far. It has a nice UI, and I am a Prime member. I enjoy watching some things for free via my membership. I do miss 3G so I tether it to my iP4 and use my unlimited data on my iP4 to get the Fire 3G access basically…. it works nicely while traveling in a car.
I will still by an iPad 3 though this coming year. The Fire is NO replacement for an iPad…. they go after 2 different audiences, which is obviously with their price points.

I’ve heard a few people talking about getting a Kindle Fire for Christmas, it definitely seems to be selling quite well! Finally some real competition for Apple, I’m sure they will lower the price of the iPad 2 to compete.
