We just got a chance to check out Samsung's Smart TV tech at CES 2012, and we've got a hands-on video for you. The TV features Samsung's "Smart Interaction" tech, using two unidirectional mics and an integrated webcam for motion and voice control — users can turn the TV on or off, change the volume, activate apps, and search the web. The TV can also identify users with face recognition via the integrated webcam. Be sure to check out our Samsung storystream for more information on their showings at CES 2012.

Perfectly demonstrates why a Siri-enabled Apple HDTV isn’t that great of an idea. Too much sound interference.

Siri enabled would be fine, as long as it’s not the only method of interaction, just a secondary input method (like on iOS).

Could they have picked a worse phrase than ‘Hi TV’

They wanted Itv but that belongs to some British broadcasting company. So they probably wanted something to the tune of HI FI only HI TV. Yes it sounds horrid but hey, if it’ll be successful people will forget all about it.

It’s as close to “iTV” as they could get. I’m not even kidding.

Who uses this?! I’m 100% faster using a remote, but I guess some people just like yelling at their TV.

-“This is the IR blaster”
-“Hi tv”
-“My hand is the cursor”
How to use high-tech poorly 101.

Considering that this is basically 1st generation voice control, I’ll hold off until these TV’s allow you to customize the control phrases. With a bit of work, things devices could do more useful things, like change channels by network or show, instead of “Channel 14.”

“Utilize your face…”
I’d like to add one more to that list.

the gesture control is pretty impressive, but would like to see it perform with the use slouching on a couch with a non uniform background

Yeah, Nilay is 100% correct. Until someone masters UI nothing about the way we use TV’s will change.

microsoft provides a way better voice control on xbox with kinect.
if samsung had used a standard os like google tv or android it would be interesting. but at the current state its more a proof of concept.

this seems to sloppy to many boxes you cable box then the connection for the tv. All of these boxes only have one or two function. The reason I love the xbox it have multi function play game, watch streaming movies, dvds, social apps, netflix, and much. Microsoft just received a patient for a dvr function. The great things about xbox is the kinect hardware. If anyone needs to make a tv its Microsoft, image all of the xbox function built into a tv WOW!!! I would buy it.

So what happens when you’re in a crowded noisy room and you want to turn to “Channel 14”? I like that the demo was given in a sound proof room.

You grab the remote. Which what i would do 100% of the time. It took him about 9 seconds to turn the TV off. Would only take me no more then 2 seconds with a remote. All i want from a TV is a great picture. None of this voice, motion, apps ect.
