OnLive's Windows 7 thin client for iPad is now available from the iTunes App Store. It's a 4.8MB free download, and you'll need an OnLive account to start toying around with the likes of Microsoft Office on the cloud service. Late last night, OnLive told us the app release would be delayed until Friday in order to deploy more servers to meet the expected demand, but it's out, it's working (at least for one of our non-press accounts) and you can find a link to the app at our source link. Read all about the free trial (and upcoming subscription Cloud Desktop services) right here, and see what all the excitement is about in our video demo below. Also, don't miss this gem in the included Getting Started guide:
"If you haven't used Windows 7 with touch before, we think you're in for a surprise."
Thanks, Jamie!

Still no gaming client, looks like Apple have killed that.

Which is really sad, cause their games target completely different audiences.

really? when did that happen?
Posted on Jan 12, 2012 | 11:55 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Well this has only been unveiled recently and is on the App Store. The game client was revealed (and on Android Market) in early December.

yeah i was just wondering if there was actual news of them being shut down on that front because of something stupid like duplicate functionality. The wait could be due to other things, and other companies.
I would imaging more than one onlive game has a weaker iPad counterpart that makes money for their parent companies. I would think the licensing would be pretty complex.

I played their iPad game client at PAX (August). It worked flawlessly and it was ready before their Android client. Apple probably wants a cut of each game sale.

Wouldn’t it be more logical to just have a remote desktop app that can connect to your own computer, for free?
Posted on Jan 12, 2012 | 10:57 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
that is what log me in ignition is for. The problem is the unreliability of your home internet connection, and to a lesser extent home computer. There are other subtle nuances, like audio streaming which hasn’t worked too well from a standard home internet connection upload, but onlive’s servers should be able to handle that with out issue.

if your upstream is 512k, then then will be a far better experience.
if your upstream is 5mb, you wouldn’t notice the difference.

It’s called Splashtop.

Yep, Splashtop is fantastic. It works as well as OnLive or better depending on your hardware and internet speed. On a modern desktop computer, you can stream the entire desktop to most dual core tablets flawlessly, and I’m talking flawless video playback with sound. Heck, on Wifi at home, when I’m browsing the web on the tablet, I browse with my desktop firefox/chrome browser through splashtop. And it works really well, it truley turning your android/iOS tablet into a Windows/OSX tablet.

I’m highly intrigued. So would you say Splashtop makes it seem like you’re running your desktop natively? If so I’ll buy this app right now!

Splashtop is nice but unencrypted:

Hi all,
Sorry for late response about this security issue.
If you connect within your home network, the streaming is limited locally.
If you connect with your gmail account. Splashtop Remote internet discovery feature creates a channel using the same technology as Google chat. Your key strokes are sent to the remote computer and the remote computers display is sent back. Any applications you run or internet activity is all going through your computer which is on your work network. So, it goes through any firewall your work has set up. We do not do additional encryption at this moment in order to maximize performance. Additional security is something we’re planning in the future.
Hope this helps you to manage the risk when you are using Splashtop Remote.

I would use Splashtop more but they don’t go to any length to encrypt the protocol that they use.

Although the interface isn’t as fluid, the splashtop remote app let’s you access your own desktop and the video/audio sync is perfect.

It’s ironic that now that people can experience this on a iPad, they’ll be saying, “wow, Windows 7 actually works with touch!”

especially the ribbon UI, that everyone loves to hates on..
as a replacement for menus, it works remarkably well across both touch and desktop..
that’s some major foresight for a GUI that was developed around 2003-2005 timeframe..

This could be interesting, particularly if you can access your own personal SkyDrive, Mesh or Dropbox account so that you can share documents with your “real” PCs.

The desktop cannot, somewhat ironically, connect to the internet. It’s a barebones Windows 7 desktop with Office and without Internet Explorer (or any browser).

It’s working fine for me, but other than the novelty or running windows on my iPad I don’t have much use for it personally.

Nor in Spain :( I have an online business and this could be a very interesting alternative for thin client deployment to our engineers who work from home like us, but no dice yet.

Another option for accessing Windows applications from iPads is Ericom AccessNow, a pure HTML5 RDP client that enables iPad users to connect to any RDP host, including Terminal Server (RDS Session Host), physical desktops or VDI virtual desktops – and run their applications and desktops in a browser.
Ericom‘s AccessNow does not require Java, Flash, Silverlight, ActiveX, or any other underlying technology to be installed on end-user devices – an HTML5 browser is all that is required.
You can choose to run a full Windows desktop or just a specific Windows app, and that desktop or Windows app will appear within a browser tab.
For more info, and to download a demo, visit:

Note: I work for Ericom
