Just following the release of Minecraft 1.1, creator Markus Persson (AKA Notch) reported on Twitter that registered users for the world-building game-thing just passed the 20 million mark. That's an impressive stat for the indie project, which has been rapidly growing in popularity since its alpha release back in May of 2009 (the full release of the title took place in November of last year).
Notch joked in the tweet that if every user weighed 70kg (about 155 pounds), the total weight would equal 25 percent of the Great Pyramid in Giza. We can only assume that that set off a rash of Great Pyramid building projects in the game, of course.

I think once Survival mode comes to Minecraft Pocket Edition, these editions will explode in new users. Minecraft works really well on a tablet.

What terrain generator is that?

What does your comment have to do with his? Please don’t leverage the comment system for your own personal advantage- it’s bad enough already.

What the hell are you talking about? Seriously don’t even waste your time.

He’s talking about the fact that the parent was talking about Survival Mode in MPE. You respond with a comment about a terrain generator. Your comment had nothing to do with Survival Mode in MPE. Why on Earth did you reply to it???

Don’t overthink it. I asked a question.

Yeah, but in the wrong place, in order to get more attention..

The terrain gen for the current pocket edition is based on the alpha generator, although is tuned to always create certain types of terrain (sand, epic mountains, etc) in every map; it is also limited to a small square map, rather than the infinite maps of alpha.

I couldn’t justify the price for the iOS version yet. But I was actually talking about what was used to image it, I want to create a picture like that of my world, this one is a step above all the others I’ve seen.

I really hope these sales numbers are scaring EA.

If EA bought Mojang, I think I’d cry.

I watched a video of people playing this game. At first I thought it was Lego World or something..they were digging tunnels and they looked like Final Fantasy 3 characters but in first person. I totally don’t get it.

You probably don’t get it because you watched a video rather than play yourself

I didn’t either until I started playing. It’s a fairly addicting game – I also play with a group of 5-6 friends and we build different projects together. That makes it a lot more fun too.

Using TeamSpeak or some other chat software makes this game so so good.
There was talk on The Verge’s Facebook page about them setting up a Minecraft server. Really hope they do that!

That would be cool. My server seems to be permanently stuck on 1.8.1 beta. I would like to use the features in release or 1.1. I stay though because it’s a good private community.

LEGO is a very good comaprison. Think of it as a LEGO game mixed with RPG elements.

Bought the game last December and it’s been taking up all my free time ever since. It’s really good.

I love that world-building ‘game-thing’

Very cool stuff though. Nice to know that an indie game can still do so well in today’s monster game corp world.
I used to call it “Adult Lego” until my niece and nephew started playing on my account. This game appeals to just about everyone young or old.

I don’t get it either. I’ve played at various different times, each time encouraged with “Oh but they added X or changed Y so you might like it” just to find the same old java simulator. I guess it’s for more of the creative types or something but I’ll be sticking to my more “traditional” games.
Mad props to Notch though. I can really respect anybody that pulls off what he has!
