Conversations between newborn parents meeting serendipitously on the city sidewalk tend to splinter along two threads: mothers commiserating over the tribulations of day-to-day care; fathers quietly judging one another's stroller selection. Really, a MacLaren? Yes, that's stereotypical but it's also true more often than not.
The 4moms Origami is a power-folding stroller guaranteed to win those sidewalk battles every time. It features two built-in generators in the rear wheels that recharge its batteries while you walk. Those stored electrons are then used to power a monochrome LCD, running lights, and even a USB jack for charging your portable electronics. A twist and push of the button on the stroller handle causes the buggy to automatically lower itself to the ground into a relatively compact package. Do it again and it'll stand back up ready for baby. Sensors in the seat prevent it from folding while baby's on board and it's light enough that Joanna can hoist it up the stairs of her double-wide while holding her illegitimate Bieberbaby. Origami costs $849 which is actually quite reasonable as far as premium strollers go.

So now wee need a battery in a Stroller? Even though it is charged by the turning wheels, why would i need this? I have a kid and a stroller an aim perfectly fine folding mine by hand. I don’t need power consuming Strollers. The world sure as hell doesn’t need this and here is me hoping its going to fail.
Sadly though i think its going to be a huge hit.

Pretty much nothing featured on this site is “needed” so I think you’d better find some other blog to read.
I suggest the following, about a person who gave up technology to move to a farm where they can do all the things “by hand” that they want, including churning butter:

gave up technology….and then started a blog about it.

I can’t believe I just read a whole post on that blog … about a duck. Back to work now!

The only thing that I would want from this on our stroller is the USB jack. How hard is it to fold most strollers? We have a city mini from Baby jogger and you fold it with one hand and it takes up less space than this. And 4moms? Not for dads as well?
Posted on Jan 16, 2012 | 6:53 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
No. Because dads are man enough to manually close a stroller and apparently, the company was started by 4 mothers. So there you go.

Oh, laugh, but I’ve seen strollers with iPads taped to the front…

They probably, initially wanted to go with one, but the stroller is going to a niche market anyway; don’t want to further deviate and restrict to moms w/ iPhones as well.

You guys obviously have no kids….NO STORAGE under the carriage ….epic fail, enjoy carrying your shopping bags in one hand and pushing the stroller with the other…

There is storage underneath.

The true test for this, or any stroller, is how easy is it to lug on a bus at Disney World. For that, you can not beat a $16 WalMart special umbrella stroller. For that price, they’re close to disposable. This thing looks cool, but not $900 cool.

Why can’t I just have both? I fail to see why I’d be opening and closing a stroller at all at a theme park, aside from the 1=2 rides I’d take an infant/small baby on.
From what I’ve seen, there’s always somebody staying behind with the stroller/baby if everybody doesn’t go. If they do go, there’s a station to park/lock the strollers.
Or you could just rent a stroller.

Interesting that the company is called 4MOMs, since my friend who works as a designer for a baby product company told me that the whole range of products is designed to appeal to Mums… apart from their strollers & prams, which are designed to appeal to Dads.
Apparently, just as guys are generally targeted with the design of premium vacuum cleaners, they are targeted with the design of strollers since they are a Dad/male led product buy.

All the tech in the world isn’t going to make telling your buddies that your 4Moms is cooler than his MacLaren.
Posted on Jan 16, 2012 | 11:26 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
u are aware there are strollers branded MacLaren, and that besides the cool name, nothing’s really great about them?
This comes from a father … MacLaren, Bugaboo … they’re crap … they’re just hip.
You can’t beat something from seriously experienced manufacturers like MaxiCosì etc (myself i use a Quinny, which is just a designer brand built by MaxiCosì, and i didn’t buy it because of the name/design, but because i had a very good price on something that usually would be much more expensive).
The comment above is partially right … although this thing has some storage, it’s nowhere near enough … no experienced mum/dad is going to even remotely consider this stroller, only firsttime parents will be blinded by the mighty USB charger port (sigh)

This comment is hilarious. You have it backwards…your Quinny is crap, but hip (glad you got a good deal on it tho) while the MacLarens are much cheaper and more durable. Have two kids and been through 4 strollers, different brands each time. The one we have now is a Bumbleride which is in between – premium design, midrange price, and satisfactory performance/durability.

I am aware. It was sarcasm.
The stroller has all this cool tech that’s supposed to appeal to Dad’s, but at the end of the day, it’s called a 4Mom Origami.

Bugaboo is far from crap. I’ve used two models through three kids and bought my first before it was popularized by HBO. Best of the best as far as I’m concerned.

Right, aside from the fact that this 4Moms pram is just a gimmick for people who have money to burn, prams such as Quinny’s and MacLarens are pretty mid-range and “ok”. I guess you can’t get a Phil&Teds in America? http://philandteds.com/en/products/push Nothing comes close in terms of quality, design and practicaility…ask anyone who has one. They’re like Volvo’s, well designed, reliable and go on forever.

Ahh yes the first baby stroller.
middle income couples expecting first child are a great target for grossly over priced products that baby will puke on, stink on and disfigure in record time.
The second stroller purchased is mostly cheaper better made and lasts longer.
Consumer reasearch has show that most fancy brand high end new model stroller have higer fail rates.

It occurs to me that the $700 saved by buying a normal well tested stroller instead, could be invested into a 529 at birth and give the kid a head start saving for school.

As a tech head, I love this thing. As a pragmatist and a parent, this looks like a waste of money. Tiny wheels, tiny pockets, etc. Give me a Bob stroller any day – take it to the market on Saturday, take it on a 10k run on Sunday.

I think this is my favourite video to date, the roping in of the couple to look after the baby, the beer in the beverage holder, the arm going around Joanna as they walk off… Brilliant.
‘She peed.’ Priceless.
