Define Retina Display

I'm just wondering what makes a display a "Retina" display - are there any numbers involved in the definition or is it simply a marketing term (I don't think there's anything wrong with that per se if it isn't tightly defined, since the iPhone 4 screen is clearly superior to the 3gs, so giving it a name seems reasonable). I'm just interested.
