Sony plans to upgrade its two Android tablets to Android 4.0, aka Ice Cream Sandwich, this spring, at about the same time that it delivers the update to its Xperia smartphone line. The Tablet S and Tablet P, we've been told, are already running ICS and are being tested behind the scenes, though Sony wouldn't be drawn on giving any more specific a release window than the spring. The company does plan to add "some really cool unique bits" on top of Android 4.0 especially for its tablet devices, but once again the details of what those additions might be were withheld from us. We don't mind a bit of mystery to our future and the most important news is now confirmed, anyway: ICS is coming to the Tablet S and Tablet P over the next few months.
Sony Tablet S and Tablet P to be updated to Android 4.0 in spring, alongside Xperia phones

Sony is one company that really tries updating its phones and tablets to the latest version of the OS rather than just putting up new tablets and phones with the OS…

Does this mean that the Xperia update will include ICS, or is the tablet update just happening at the same time? I was commenting to a friend just yesterday that I liked my Xperia Play, but couldn’t help wanting to upgrade to ICS. I’d be quite happy if this were to be the case.

The full 2011 Xperia line will get ICS. The news today is that the Tablets will get it around the same time as well.

Yes it means the Xperia update will be to 4.0 aka ICS.

I wonder if 4.0 can lift it up from a “6” review. It is pretty mediocre at the moment.

4.0.1, 4.0.2, or 4.0.3? Or Just 4.0.0?

Hopefully with ICS, we can remove the Sony “facelifts” on top of the Honeycomb interface… namely that ugly, eye-bleeding white background as opposed to the soothing black default background of the app launcher.

Not yet, promised by the end of this quarter (i.e. end of March). But keep in mind that the international Galaxy S II and the custom US versions might not get it at the same time. The US versions of the Galaxy S have tended to lag the global variant.

I really hope that Sony keeps the boot-loader unlocked. I am not sure that I can wait for the official ICS update as my Xperia Arc is so laggy on 2.3.4 – hopefully the future stable cyanogenmod 9 (ICS) will save my phone..

It’s the “really cool unique bits” that manufacturers add to their phones, that keep me from buying any non-nexus device.

Sony is probably the manufacturer that keeps updating its Android line the most, only if their phones costed less in Latin America…
