Now here's a hardware announcement we didn't expect to see this year: a new portable Neo Geo console. SNK seems to have licensed a handheld decked out in Neo Geo livery, with 20 classic arcade games from Metal Slug to King of Fighters '94 preloaded onto 2GB of internal memory. The system also has a 4.3-inch screen, an SD card slot of undisclosed purpose, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons, and (most importantly) appears to keep the digital stick from the Neo Geo home console's pad. Of course, it's not the first time you've been able to play these games on the go — a lot of them are available on SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 for PSP, and also as downloads from the PlayStation Store — but the device's retro appeal is undeniable. No word on pricing or availability as of yet, though. The reveal comes from Japanese game blog Famicom Plaza and is yet to be confirmed by SNK itself, so it's probable that, if real, the device has leaked ahead of its time.
Here's the list of games that come with the device:
- World Heroes
- Ultimate 11
- Top Player's Golf
- Sengoku
- Nam-1975
- Mutation Nation
- Last Resort
- King of Monsters
- Frenzy
- Cyber Lip
- Fatal Fury Special
- Art of Fighting
- Super Sidekicks
- League Bowling
- Metal Slug
- Magical Lord
- Baseball Stars Professional
- Samurai Shodown
- King of Fighters '94
- Fatal Fury

Its aspect ratio is wrong too.

It seems to have a black edge to edge front fascia with a black plastic surround.

Well, considering the Neo Geo portable has a 4.3 inch screen in addition to face buttons shoulder buttons, and a stick, they look very dissimilar if they are at the same scale.

Also, the Neo Geo portable isn’t a phone.

My TV looks just like yours, its black and its rectangle with a stand.

When I first saw the picture, I thought this would be an article about a pop-on game controller for the iPhone.

SNK didn’t go bankrupt a long time ago?

That was exactly my question!

Atlus publishing King of Fighters XIII helped infuse some cash into the company.

Day 1 purchase. Regretted getting rid of my neo geo pocket color since the day afterwards.

In all seriousness I want this, especially if they plan on adding more games in the future.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 2:39 AM EST via mobile reply Recommend Flag actions
Even if they want to add more games I doubt everyone will be bothered to develop for it.

Isn’t there an indie Neo Geo scene? Pretty sure someone did a new shooter for it recently

Retro cool or what! Man I wanted a Neo Geo so bad when they first came out… Wasn’t the original horrendously expensive?
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 2:46 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I remember them on grey import selling at about £1000 for the system and £1500 a game at launch.
Man grey import in the UK got insane, the first Playstation I saw cost £1400 and ran Ridge Racer which was well over £100.

Tell me about it! I remember looking for a Sega Saturn (don’t judge me…) on import was around £500 – £600.

Yup sounds about right, I bought my Super Famicom for £400 with Super Mario on release, and paid £110 for street fighter lol. The internet more or less killed grey import extortion dead thank god.

Utterly shameless ripp off. Apple should shut these clowns down without delay.

Waayyyy too many buttons to be an Apple ripoff.
Also, not a phone.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5:03 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
They should shut down something that has round corners, a shiny finish, similar size and… has no other similarities and isn’t even a phone? Really?

Why? Do you hate technology?

Man, talk about swing-and-a-miss!
How do you make it look so fucking ugly when you’re basically just ripping iPhone 4 design. Yuck.

dont listen to the haters snk – i think it looks quite nice :)

I remember thinking a Neo Geo would be the ultimate console – had to be for the price!
Then I read an article, ACE I think it was in, where they revealed the truth. The giddy height of cart memory in SNES/Megadrive games was around 26 megabits, Neo Geo carts were hitting 330! Wow! I hadn’t heard of compression at this point – meaning the only advantage they had was they didn’t have to decompress the data.
Hopefully, they won’t overcharge for this, simply because there’s no justification for it. I can justify the console, however. There’s something that bothers me about playing a machine’s games on something that was never expected to see them.

So cool. Now all they have to do is price it under a hundred dollars.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 7:22 AM EST via mobile reply Recommend Flag actions
I would definitely buy this for twenty British pounds. But no more! Maybe twenty-five. Certainly not more than thirty.
To all the people saying it looks like an iPhone – if you’re joking, you need to be more obvious. If you’re serious, well, you have no idea about industrial design. Black slab with silver edges is a pretty common aesthetic. And…IT’S NOT A PHONE.

Can it make calls?
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 9:55 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Why so much hate for a retro reboot lol. Anyway, it’s either real and all you apple lovers can hush (apple should feel no threat, its android that’s beating them in the market), or it’s fake and there is nothing to complain about……….OR this is a speculated design and not the actual

wow…must have! Fingers crossed its real

Neo Geo had 6 buttons, only four here.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 1:20 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
No it doesn’t.
I have an MVS board rigged up to a Supergun and use two AES sticks and they have 4 main buttons, Most games only use 2 or 3 of those, the fighting games use all 4.
Aside from the main buttons they have a start and select buttons at the top.
This little handheld has all the buttons it needs.

F**k yeah! Always wanted a Neo-Geo, but could never convince my parents to buy it for me (I was in 2nd or 3rd grade when it first released). Had to settle for an NES instead. This will be mine!

This looks sweet. Dying to know what the SD card slot can do, quite intriguing! I must get one, although a European release is surely unlikely

Does anybody else think this is something that should have been released years ago? l mean the technology isn’t anything new, l once bought a pre owned Psp with an entire SNK/Neo Geo library of games perfectly emulated on the system, that was back in 2006!
