We're hearing from people familiar with the matter that Samsung — which had originally planned to announce its 2012 flagship Galaxy S III phone at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona late next month — has now decided to delay the news. It's unclear when or where the new announcement will be, but we're told that it'll still be out there "before summer." Though MWC seems like a logical choice for the GSIII's unveiling (the GSII was announced there last year), the speculation is that Samsung was uncomfortable with another long lag between the global launch and US availability. The US is a key market for Samsung's mobile business, of course — particularly when the company is successful in getting most or all national carriers to pick it up.
While we don't know what exactly Samsung will be announcing at MWC in the GSIII's place, we understand the company will have "interesting stuff" — perhaps a Galaxy Tab refresh, especially since the 10.1 is getting long in the tooth and we're due for a round of quad-core updates in 2012. A new Windows Phone portfolio is another possibility; there have been rumors that Microsoft will make an announcement at the show, and Samsung is about as strong a Windows Phone partner as Microsoft has outside of Nokia. We'll be following this story closely as it develops.
Update: German blog BestBoyZ, which has been accurate in the past, is reporting the same thing.

HTC are getting a bit stale. Pretty much the same design language as when they launched the Desire. And they’re getting very predictable as well. Sense is also horrible (as Chris said on the latest Verge Mobile Podcast).

Replaces Google’s apps with it’s own. While this may not have been as bad on Gingerbread, ICS’s apps are a lot better, and according to the Sense ICS leaks, it’s still happaening.
Even on my HTC Sensation dual core, Gingerbread Sense (not including ICS Sense as it isn’t finished) lags. Stock Gingerbread/CM7 does not lag.
It’s very glossy and to my mind and design tastes, out of date. Stock ICS (which I am running on my HTC Sensation) is so much better, design wise. Matte colours, minimalist, and really nice icons, none of which Sense does.
It replaces everything to do with Android, which really isn’t needed, especially on ICS. OK, a few widgets, tweaks to the launcher, icons (on Gingerbread) and maybe an app or two, like Watch, but nothing more is needed.
Seriously, Sense needs to die.

I really REALLY hope not. Samsung hasn’t stayed true to the true meaning of a Nexus device. It’s supposed to be the pinnacle of smartphone technology, not a freaking year old GPU with no improvement in camera since the Nexus One.
I really hope the next Nexus is developed by either Motorola or HTC.
- Disclaimer: I own and love my Galaxy Nexus…but really, it could do with a 2.2f lens and a better GPU since it’s the freaking Nexus.

Google is always the one that gets to pick the exact parts in Nexus phones, Sansung just happens to be the manufacturer that builds them. Case in point, I cannot remember the last time Samsung used a TI chip in one of its phones when it has Exynos to use (high end), Qualcomm (LTE), or Tegra 2 (mid end) to pick from this year.

Uhhh, really? One time Americans don’t get a product first Samsung is gonna delay it just for the US market?
They make a butt load of money in Europe and in Korea and just because your stupid carriers don’t wanna carry the same phone, we non-Americans have to suffer? I really hope that is wrong. Or did it hurt that much that you had to wait a few months more for a Galaxy S2 variant?
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 4:59 PM EST reply Recommend (9) Flag actions
A global release would make the next phone much more effective though, plus when they release their competitors won’t be able to copy certain features of their next handset
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5:03 PM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
I beg to differ.
There isn’t much the others can copy and add without implementing it in a very shitty way – because they aren’t Apple cough “I want a glass screen instead of plastic!” /cough
If HTC needs nearly 2 month to send out some ‘security patches’ to remove Carrier IQ, then I’m pretty sure others can’t implement a bigger feature in a month or two.
Besides, devices are planned like a year ahead, so I don’t there there would be a lot changes in the last second.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5:12 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Saying others won’t copy features is basically saying there is no competition.
Samsung is a huge innovator regardless of what you think, and software is not something they tend to innovate on.
I am talking strictly hardware

“Will it hurt you so much if you have to wait a few months until US-carriers put their butt stamp on the devices?”
To be honest, not really. I just got a used Galaxy S2 but if the Galaxy S3 would get as fast cheaper as it was with the S2, I wouldn’t mind getting it.

Millions of users the world over waiting because the US carriers all want different versions? I think it is pretty unfair.
Oh, and I know the US market is important, but not THAT important for Samsung to delay a launch (the international market’s bigger for them)
If they’re just delaying the unveiling, I’m ok with it. But the reason, I feel, is something else
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5:15 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I think that Samsung should just tell the US Carriers: “Shut up and sell the phone we give you” like Apple says: “Shut up and sell the phone we give you”
Samsung likes copying Apple, right? ;)
(not trying to start a war, I actually love Samsung, I’m just pointing out that Apple is incredibly good at getting carriers to do what they want, and the major Android players need to make them do this so that their software is easier to update.)

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5:30 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Check your facts. The USA has like 300 million mobile subscriptions, Western Europe has more than 400 million last time I saw. And both make approximately just half of the global market. Neither are specially hungry for smartphones too, it’ something like 20% of all recently purchased handsets for both.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 6:27 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Some better stats, compiled by the great Tomi Ahonen.
http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2011/12/smartphone-penetration-rates-by-country-we-have-good-data-finally.html
USA has 111.8 million smartphones. uk+de+it+sp+fr = 110.4, pretty close, but other European countries (pl, nl, se…) add up at least more 50 million to that.
The smartphone penetration, actual number of smartphones per capita, is already 35% in the USA. In Europe it’s lower, about 29% in my calculations
-according to your pessimism or optimism, that can either mean they want less smartphones, or that there’s more room for converts.China and India together make another 110.3 smartphones, with a small penetration rate of just 6% and 3%
-something obviously related to the smaller resources of a large part of those populations. Brazil and Russia make a total of 163 million for the “BRICSs”. Pacific countries together (excluding China) make up another 80 million. The world total is 745 million, so that makes the USA only 15% of the installed base of smartphones. It’s the biggest single country on the list, yes. It is a very large smartphone population inside a single country. But it’s just a “tiny” part compared to the bigger picture.
I think the USA may be responsible for a larger share of profits, yes, and not just on the handset sales, but in app purchases and mobile advertising… But as far as smartphone units go, the USA is just another player, an important and big one, but as big as other pieces on the table. Concepts like “the American market is the key to the rest of the world”, or “the most important/prioritary”, etc, still go as complete fantasy to me.

samsung is delaying it probably because they want to take advantage of the hype.
The GSII came out very delayed in the US. Now there’s going to be the iPhone 5, the Nexus. I seem to remember reading the phone was delayed in South Korea as well. So it’s not too bad if they stall for a bit, and release the phone at once on every continent simultaneously to take advantage of all the hype surrounding it which = $$$

Additional rumor about it was regarding their processor. Some suggested they might delay it a bit to go with their Cortex A15 which was earlier scheduled for later half of next year. Announcing it at MWC would mean they’d have to be sure the chip would be ready in time for the launch.
Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5:04 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Ditto. If they launched with the Exynos 5250, they’d beat their competitors with a rival Cortex A15 implementation by about 6 months.

I hope they do this. An A7/A15 in a LITTLE.big configuration would be incredible.
Also, am I the only person who wishes they’d announce it right before actually releasing it to market, somewhat like Apple does with the iPhone? I wouldn’t mind building up some serious anticipation. The Galaxy S is a becoming a household name, it’s time we thought of it as such.

Shouldn’t the title of this article be “announced” or “unveiled”, not “launch”. I firmly believe that it’s not going to be launched next month.

I just hope that they skip this 40nm quad core ARM Cortex A9 madness, and head directly to big.LITTLE dual core A15 with A7 low power cores on 28nm for the sake of longer battery!
I know this would probably mean H2 2012… sigh

This, a million times this. Don’t forget, Galaxy S devices are always released to market around the beginning of H2 or the very end of H1 at the earliest depending on the market. Announcing it closer to actual launch wouldn’t really hurt anything, would it?

I really hope this doesnt happen, the early international launch actually helps samsung iron out some kinks before they make the US carriers happy, and if anything just builds up hype. That’s incredibly nice of Samsung to penalise everyone that isn’t American. Given the fact that the American’s don’t even call them Galaxy S 2’s but rather by the variant name, I’d say it’s time for Samsung to leverage it’s power and make US Carriers carry the base version as the same time as the rest of the world gets the phone.
