iPad-controlled mixers were a big part of the NAMM show this year, and Mackie has put together one of the more innovative solutions we've heard of. The Mackie DL1608 is a digital mixer with full iPad control, but the real headlining feature is that this mixer can be controlled wirelessly. Once everything's hooked up to the DL1608, users can adjust the mix through the iPad while wandering the room, letting engineers easily tweak the sound from places besides the soundboard. The mixer even supports up to 10 iPads simultaneously, though we imagine it might get a little difficult competing with nine other soundmen over a mix.
Other benefits the iPad brings to the table include the ability to record the live mix directly to the iPad's storage and the ability to mix in pre-recorded audio stored on the iPad into the mix. There's also a number of software plug-ins and digital signal processing, again all controlled through your iPad. The 16-channel mixer should be available by this summer, retailing for $999, plus the cost of an iPad — there's no way to work this mixer without it. If you're at all interested in this product, we strongly urge you to watch the video below.

Why the hell would you pay for the privilege of not having REAL sliders?

I sort of agree. While I love using an iPad for DAW control as much as the next guy, it hardly is comparable to using a real controller like a D-Command. The problem Mackie has is keeping the price point low enough on a 16 channel mixer while incorporating flying faders.

I agree. The Presonus Studio live has iPad control and real faders as well as the ability to do 32 channel multitrack. It’s about the same price.

It would seem the benefit is being able to walk around with all the console’s controls. I doubt this is heavily intended for studio recording and more geared towards a live scenario.

What would be really nice is if it had USB or Firewire for studio use. It would then be any bands or sound guys dream. I could see a small to medium sized band using this for in ears instead of hauling around large boards like they do now, streamline it down to a nice single rack with the receivers and this board. I’ll see what the reviews are like in the summer.

How is Mackie still a company? No seriously. Has anyone seen a Mackie console lately that’s less than 15 years old?

This is all Zach Galifianakis’s fault.

I have absolutley no need for a mixer like this in my current life, but I feel strongly compelled to purchase one just to support the people who made that video. Seriously. Hat’s off! That was a total pleasure to watch.
