If you missed out on the HP TouchPad fire sale extravaganzas of 2011, now's your chance to grab a WebOS tablet at a discount. Woot.com has refurbished TouchPads in stock, and it's selling the 16GB variety for $169.99, and the 32GB variety for $219.99, with a 90-day HP warranty. The prices are still a far cry from HP's original $99 and $149.99 sale, especially considering these are refurbished models. But we're now months beyond HP's announcement that it would stop making WebOS hardware, so the devices are only going to become more rare — that means now's the time to buy, unless you're holding out for the last TouchPad on Earth.
Update: That was quick! Woot's all sold out of the 16GB variety.

or maybe demand post Cyanogenmod 9 Alpha 0 aka Android ICS for touchpad. I’ve had it installed for a couple weeks now, and it works much more like a solid beta build then an Alpha 0 build. Almost everything works, and it looks beautiful. Sometimes I still can’t believe I got this thing for 99 bucks and it’s killing w/ Android on it. Ran linpack and quadrant scores and it absolutely buries my Galaxy Nexus and my Galaxy Tab 10.
When they get a final release going, it’s going to be pretty epic.
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 11:47 AM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
But why destroy WebOS with Android ?
Epic might be iPad 3 .
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 11:49 AM EST reply Recommend (5) Flag actions
Installing CM7/9 doesnt “destroy” webOS, it adds a partition so you can dual boot. webOS works great next to ICS.

I own an iPad as well (I know, tablet/gadget whore), and it’s pretty not epic. It’s the most expensive toy my 2 year old uses. high PPI is hardly epic anymore, and as far as we can tell, that’s pretty much the big feature of the iPad 3. Besides, “Epic” was in reference to ROI, i.e. 99 bucks for a dual core 1.5ghz dual booting Web OS/ICS tablet.

Instead of bashing an iPad that has not even been announced, try to contribute something to the conversation.

Instead of complaining hypocritically…
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 5:59 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
You should educate yourself. You can dual-boot both operating systems so you can use WebOS when you want, and Android (with its healthy app market) if you want. < $200 for an incredibly versatile tablet? Thats an amazing deal.

Last I heard, CM does not allow the use of the camera and does not allow video. Dual booting may be a fun hobby, but most people just want to pick up a tablet and use it.
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 2:21 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
You heard wrong. The latest version is still in alpha (Google if you don’t know what that means) and yet it is polished enough to be passed off as beta.
Not everybody has a ton of money like iFans. Some people want to spend less and get the same or more functionality out of their devices.

Actually c.hack’s is correct. ICS doesn’t have a working camera, and the video overlay doesn’t work yet, so you can’t watch Netflix or HQ Youtube videos. That said, I’ve been very pleased with my TP since I put CM9 on it.
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 8:26 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Correct for CM9 Alpha 0 and 0.5. CM7 doesn’t have this limitation.

while i love love love the differences between cm7 and cm9, without hardware video it’s useless to a lot of us. (including me)

It’s still in alpha. Wait for a couple of months.

oh i’m not complaining. I’m quite grateful for the work and progress so far. Sorry if it sounded sour.

now that cm9 is open sourced…. it will come very soon!
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 2:05 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
It works good, but they need to improve the video driver for it. I’ve noticed for all cyanogenmod’s their is an obscene amount of ghosting. It happened on my G1 and I saw it for both CM7 and CM9 on my touchpad. I hope they upgrade the driver. Since both webos and android and linux based, maybe they can port the driver from webos to android.

Yep, and people still want. Don’t cry, people.

The hardware on these things is amazing. It’s way too powerful for the puny WebOS. I put ICS on this thing, and it runs smooth like butter.

What are the bugs with the ICS release? I dualboot with CyangenMod now
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 12:08 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
HD video doesn’t work.
Camera doesn’t work
Microphone doesn’t work.
There are some other minor issues, but you have to take into consideration that it is still in alpha.
Overall, I’m very pleased with it. I’m using CM9 Alpha 0.5.
p.s. Are you the person with the same username on ubuntuforums?

Ha, I didn’t notice your username, yeah, that’s me :)

^Nevermind!
FORGET WHAT WORKS. WHAT DOESN’T WORK?
Yeah, let’s focus on the negative. Some (but not all) things that DO NOT WORK:
Hardware Video (OMX). As a result, Netflix does not work, YouTube works only only in non-HD videos. Use something like MXPlayer and SW codecs for your local media.
Audio is a mess. The microphone does not work. Work on the current libaudio solution has halted because we will eventually switch to a CAF libaudio.
Camera does not work. The only libcamera.so that we have is from froyo and its closed source. There is a wrapper for QCOM gingerbread libcamera libraries that could likely be used as a basis to get our camera working.
Market filters prevent some apps from being installed (this can partly solved by switching back to standard DPI settings(120, 160, 240). The current build is using 160 which fixes the market but makes everything look ugly and low resolution.
Titanium Backup crashes the kernel. There’s an investigation in progress…There are reports that older versions do work.(Fixed alpha0.5)
Most of the hardware problems from CM7 still exist in this CM9 alpha build.
Gapps intended for CM7/Gingerbread will not work in CM9/ICS. If you choose to install GAPPS then you’ll need to get an updated compilation
USB file transfers use MTP or PTP in Ice Cream Sandwich and Honeycomb. Traditional storage mounting is not supported in the Touchpad build.

You’re right. But I assume camera and HD support will be in shortly. Other than that, ICS makes the HPTP waay more usable, IMO.
p.s. Ima friend you on ubuntuforums.

No it doesn’t. ICS browser STILL lags when opening any image heavy website. Try opening theverge.com and scroll around while it’s loading. You can’t. It will stutter/freeze. ICS’s thread UI is locked to the same priority as all apps.

I bought my 32GB for $400, ($200 off through Staples that one time… BEFORE the stupid announcements and firesale) And I loved it.
I don’t see why people say it’s a bad tablet at $300. Just it’s hardware is better than anything else below $400.
Sigh… :-/
I at least hope webOS does awesome now that it is currently being open-sourced.

I’ve got this thing and an ipad2. I would save your money. WebOS is really nice but as you know there are a very limited amount of apps for it. I’ve loaded CM7/CM9 on the Touchpad as well. Besides the fact that Android is not nearly as polished as IOS, there are many problems with both cm7 and 9. Mostly pertaining to wifi. You can’t just pick up your touchpad and get on your network. Often you have to shutdown wifi, reboot, enable. Its sort of a pain. The device itself is chunky and the screen is a fingerprint magnet.
If something great happens further down the road, you can probably pick one of these up used on ebay for a similar price or lower. Soon this hardware will be obsolete anyways. The ipad 2 might come down to the $350 range when the ipad 3 is released. I would save my money for that. I will say ICS is a great improvement in UX.

You could flip the little toggle that keeps wifi on while it’s sleeping. It’s just slightly aggressive power management.
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 6:01 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
and it sounds like you haven’t upgraded to 0.5 yet.
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 6:01 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Strangely, I wasn’t having wifi issues with Alpha 0, but Alpha 0.5 seems to be dropping it when it goes into sleep, only to keep it off when I wake the tablet off. I’ll gladly take the wifi problems over the charging problem I was seeing.

Everyone loves a nice deal, even if it’s more than what the clearance prices were when they were new. I use my TouchPad 32gb model everyday. Even as an affirmed iPad 2 fan, this TP works for many of the things I do, including multitasking of email, Splashtop, Twitter and Skype. Perfect for meetings and all over the office.

I got my 16GB at release and I was a true web OS fan, but I must say that having ICS on this thing makes it so much more useful…worth much more than i paid for it that is for sure
Posted on Jan 27, 2012 | 9:02 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I own a touchpad. Not sure if this is a ‘good deal’. The only thing thing this tablet is good for is being a half-assed web-browser. And even then, it chokes on half the web-pages out there and flash videos are flaky/choppy as hell. Oh, and no apps. It will be useful once a rock solid version of ICS it out for it.
