Last night, a little bird told us that Vizio's Rose Bowl ad wasn't for a TV: it was actually the company's first all-in-one PC. We didn't believe it at first, but that's exactly what Vizio is about to do: enter the Windows PC business. The company has a slew of machines in its arsenal, including a 24- and 27-inch all-in-ones and 14-inch and 15.6-inch ULV-powered ultrabooks, and Vizio told the Financial Times that they will "exceed ultrabook specifications." (In fact, Vizio tells us it won't officially use the "ultrabook" term to differentiate its machines — it's going with "thin and lite" instead.) On top of that, it will have a regular 15.6-inch laptop for "extreme portable performance."
We don't have any real details on the specs — all we know is that they will have DLNA for streaming to Vizio TVs, naturally — but Vizio is saying these will be out in May, which leads us to think they will be powered by Intel's forthcoming Ivy Bridge processors. We're digging up more details as we type, but in the meantime check out the photos and renders below. As you can see, the all-in-ones will be accompanied by matching keyboards, mice, external optical drives, and what looks like a Magic Touchpad too.
Update: Now that we've got real photos, we can see a few of the ports on tap: it appears that one of the ultrabooks will have only a pair of USB 3.0 ports, one on either side, a 3.5mm audio jack on the left and an HDMI port on the right.

They look really cool. But look at that dang keyboard! Looks almost like a solid flat surface. That type of keyboard drives me nuts! My fingers get lost.
My friend has an acer keyboard he pilfered and gaming on it is like pulling teeth.

Vizio makes cheap TVs that are borderline trashy but a good value—as long as you don’t have to mess with the interface—but I guess that applies to all TVs. The best thing about Vizio is the way they have helped accelerate HDTV commodification. Now they look to be entering on the low end of midrange computing—another value play through the commodification of “don’t-call-them-ultrabooks” and all-in-ones, something that HP should be wary of. In fact, maybe HP should get out of the hardware business.

I think the quality of their TVs is well above borderline trashy.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 1:30 PM EST reply Recommend (5) Flag actions
Would you prefer “borderline disposable”? And I don’t mean this as a knock on Vizio because it is a good value, particularly in difficult economic times. But no one is ever going to look at a typical Vizio TV and say that it’s fantastic without the qualifier for the price. These aren’t built to last. They are built on the cheap like transistor radios before them. And it’s possible that Vizio, like Sony* before them, can make the transition from cheap to high quality but still good value that lasts. But their current crop of electronics are not there yet.
*This would be the classic Sony, not the lumbering conglomerate that makes user-hostile blu-rays and puts malware on their CDs to prevent piracy.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 2:01 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Sigh..with or without qualifiers, your comment is misguided at best.. The panels used on all brands of TVs come from a small handful of plants. VIZIO creates the UI, firmware, and chooses a few other components, but they are essentially the same TVs per performance category as made by the awesome brands that you know and love. I have owned a couple, one for 5 years now and one for about 3 and they are very good – regardless of price. I know others that are very satisfied with them as well.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 6:23 PM EST reply Recommend (4) Flag actions
Exactly, after doing some research 5 years ago and finding out that the majority of components are the same used in the big brands and sold at a lower price I didn’t even think twice and its been a great tv.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 10:07 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Agreed with the not having to mess with the interface part, the worst part about a Visio is the OS and firmware, since the panels are exactly the same as other brands.

True. We have a 55" LED-lit Vizio we bought last year for around $1000. The picture compared to the $1500 Sony was nearly the same (and I know, it was in a store where lighting is horrible in general, but I haven’t had a bad experience with the picture quality). It’s probably not as thin, but it really doesn’t matter. A big TV with pretty good picture is all I need.

finally a 15.6" ultrabook! all the other ones are 13.3 or 14 inches..
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 12:03 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
We’re all so different with what appeals to us, I love the 13 inch netbook or whatever you want to call it, the 15 inch and up are . bigger than I want in a laptop, whatever, and I hate trackpads. I’m going to wait before purchasing any new model of any item to see how they rate. I was so ripped off with an HP model last year, and my Samsung Galaxy( former) started on fire, flames and all, I was put on oxygen when I was 38 and that is not something that was pleasant! That is when I traded it in, AT&T were very good and prorated a new Iphone4s for me and that was my first Apple device, so until this Vizio and the very newest items, out, I think we have Android, Apple and Windows all in this house now, no hating on anyone because of their device. I think it would be great if they worked well and are as fairly priced as the TV’s. Is anyone else getting to the point that we are at, all of the PC’s, netbooks, tablets and phone’s that we will ever need for a long time?
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 3:39 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
We also have devices from several manufacturers, representing various OS ecosystems, in the house. iPod Touch, Mac Mini, Apple TV 2, 2 Android phones (LG and Samsung), an Acer Iconia A500, a custom built, HTPC/file server running Win 7 (along with virtualized Linux and OSX). We also have a Dell desktop, a MacBook Air, and Gateway and HP laptops as well. This isn’t even to mention all of the display, connectivity, productivity and backup peripherals in use around the house. We’re going to make a concerted effort to reduce the number of these devices this year and I’m anxiously awaiting what tricks the innovative people from many companies have coming down the pike that will allow us to consolidate and whittle them down to only a couple of low-power consumption (yet still powerful enough) devices that will truly serve all of our needs.
For both work and entertainment, we’re a bit overloaded on devices now. I’ll make a bet that a lot of the households of the readers of The Verge are very much like ours and are device brand agnostic or at least willing to get whatever best gets the job done, feels good to use, and economically makes sense at the time of purchase. That’s why I often sit back and have to laugh at these “device brand wars” and comments from cultish zealots from whatever camp they feel like they need to represent… :-)

Vizio realized that after doing an Android tablet, jumping into the PC market isn’t too different. Just this time, they need to license Windows, the cost of which all manufacturers pass on to their customers anyway. They do look a little Apple-like though, but from my experience with Vizio TV’s, if they make their PC displays the same they will have nice displays.

Don’t be sensitive. It’s not about claiming others are “ripping off” Apple, it’s about recognizing that Apple’s dedication to clean lines, minimalism, light colors, and elegant curves has clearly influenced other brands. No, Apple didn’t “invent” any of this stuff, but you can’t deny that they’re responsible for making it popular.

Very nice designs. I hope Vizio finds success.

They actually look nice. The ultrabooks remind me of some super-thin Dell laptop concept a few years back.
The chrome on the back of the AI1 looks a bit cheap, but yeah, these seem fairly competitive.

since the smallest size they’re selling is 14 inch, i don’t think it can be officially classified as an ultrabook. still, it looks really thin and the design looks great. here’s hoping that it also feels great!

They do look nice. I really like the 12 to 14 inch models for myself, my husband needs the bigger one’s. Nice variety here.

Just skimming this article, noticed the last sentence seem to have gotten cut off, at least on my screen:
“The AIO, meanwhile, gets a USB 3.0 port, SD card slot and what appears to be”
Appears to be…what?

Also, can I say that if this thing is decently priced (especially if it’s priced fairly low), it looks pretty great (aesthetically speaking).

People seem to love knocking on vizio tvs. From my personal experience, my family has owned many large flat screens in the last few years, our Vizios have never broke and the picture has always been the best. My sharp gets so hot it has to turn off, my Panasonic freezes and has to have the power pulled, my Samsung tv has to get a full board replacement which took 2 months. My friends have said similar things and for the most part now only buy vizios.

How well did their tablet do? What about their GoogleTV? Does anyone remember? No thanks, I’ll stick to my MB-Air & iMac.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 2:58 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
I didn’t know they made a tablet. We have an android and an Apple tablet to share in the house. We could use a good not too expensive one for the kids and we didn’t like the Kindle Fire. Maybe a first generation Ipad that are going for really low prices now, that would be good for them?
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 3:50 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
“Apple tablet” “Ipad”… 0 for 2 ain’t bad.

I don’t think you have give up one to have another.
Using the same logic: Hoe that Apple HiFi do? What about their Apple TV (1)?
It’s not a zero-sum game.

Honestly, if the internals actually match the attractiveness of those exteriors, they’d be definite sellers – price dependent, of course.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 5:05 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
“if the internals actually match the attractiveness of those exteriors”
why would you ever make that assumption? and by the way, newsflash, it runs Windows. It’s not a cheap Mac.

These look really attractive.
The only question now is “Intel or ARM?”
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 5:46 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Intel. I’m not sure they would risk their debut on some untried stuff like Windows on ARM.

I have a 32" Vizio and I love it. I’m impressed with their entry into the PC market, but if you think they’re not ripping off Apple, you need to step outside of yourself for a moment and take a look. What you see here are uglier, yet verbatim versions of Apple products. These are sketches of ideas that Apple scrapped as they pushed their better and more refined ideas forward.

They look really nice, I just hope they are aluminum and not plastic.
Thanks,

Judging by the pictures these look pretty good. That’s exciting. I’m not sure about the keyboard, it is stylish but I’m not sure how comfortable it would be with the individual keys so close to together. The colour appears a pretty unfortunate metallic grey but I guess one might still hold out hope that it’s due to the chassis being actual metal.

Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 9:09 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Sincerly, give me the cheapest stuff with the best possible specs, and I will buy it with double the warranty on an AMEX card. I don’t give a crap about the “design and beauty” as much as I care about the thin and light and function. And if I have a problem with it, all I need to do is throw it down a staircase, and get another one under warranty. I’m good with that.

Vizio actually makes some pretty solid LCD TVs for the money. They might not be quite on the level of some of the nicer Samsung or Panasonic displays, but they’re in the same ballpark for a fraction of the cost.
That said, I’m not thrilled about Vizio entering the PC market. It should continue to focus on the home theater segment and just do it well. Branching out like this isn’t likely to be great for anyone.
Posted on Jan 07, 2012 | 11:25 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Doesn’t it sound like they’re taking a gamble w/this? I agree they should stick to the home theater. They didnt do well with their GoogleTV and their Android tablet, so why take another risk? This might just the product that makes or breaks this company. Good luck Vizio, you’ll need it.

Looks great, but the keyboards look unusable. Way too flat and close together for my liking.

These look gorgeous to me. I love that Vizio is creating something that is original and un-plasticy, but doesn’t look like a MacBook Pro/Air! One problem with these guys – they’ll be running Windows…. (you may have heard about its poison-like qualities) ;)

I can see Apple going after these guys if their products start selling well. Which sucks because these look as though their going to be a great combination of quality, performance and price.

IMO, hardware design-wise, finally a competitor to the MacBook Air. Sleek, no non-sense, nothing fancy-to-please-the-boss. Namely, no design by committee. At last!

Vizio, make the display stand thicker (wider) and non reflective and the sense of instability should be gone or make it completely transparent with only wires visible inside a thick and wide transparent bar.

I’m not one to speculate too much before the facts are available, but from those images, it looks good. I like the style. I know a lot of people are skeptical about the keyboard, and I am as well, but then again, I felt that way a year or so ago when the current style of keyboards came out, and now I adjusted just fine. So we’ll have to wait and see. I have no reason to hate these computers yet, so I’m pretty optimistic. Besides, more competition fuels innovation, so even if Vizio’s computer’s aren’t the best, I’m sure they will be keeping other PC manufacturers on their toes. Winner = consumer.

It’s Sick. The Aesthetic is so inspiring minimalist without being a rip-off. the AIO were looking sick but would need more space at the back because of the port placement. maybe better of to be on the sides. as for the laptops, they made some nice looking one., also not a Rip-off. (I’m looking at you hp Envy.). well that’s just observation based on the pictures.
OK, Before i declare any comment. (I’m no apple fan or hater). So before someone flame me with trolling, i’m sorry i wont bother.

I like Vizio, they seem willing to partner with the technology companies to take on the service providers. Of course, its all in the name of differentiation, but I’m all for that if it helps bring paradigm change!.
