Ahead of its press conference at CES, Acer has just announced the new Aspire S5 ultrabook, which the company says is the world's thinnest — it's only 15mm at its thickest point. It's a black, magnesium-alloy and brushed-metal 13.3-inch laptop, weighing 1.35kg (2.97 pounds) and featuring Acer's Instant On technology that brings the computer back from sleep in 1.5 seconds. It also uses Acer Always Connect, which lets users manage data on their computers even when the machine is asleep — the S5 can be woken up from a smartphone, and will immediately log into email and social network accounts. There's a Thunderbolt port inside, capable of 20Gbps speeds, along with USB 3.0 and HDMI ports — all are hidden below the S5's hinge, and can be accessed by pressing Acer's new MagicFlip key. The computer is powered by an Intel Core processor (though Acer didn't reveal which one), has SSD storage, uses Dolby Home Theater audio, and has a PowerSmart battery pack that Acer says will have a life cycle three times longer than normal batteries.
The S5 will start shipping in the second quarter of this year, though pricing was not announced. Its Thunderbolt support means this must be an Ivy Bridge machine, meaning we won't be seeing it until at least May or June.
Thanks, Babyfacemagee!

I guess we’ll see updated and thinner Macbook Air earlier

This is pretty cool but I don’t want to compromise build to make it thinner. We’ll see how the reviews go.

My judgement on this issue may be clouded, because my only computer is a MacBook Air, but I feel that it is thin enough for now.
It would be nice, ultimately, for the implied thickness to be a reality rather than a perspective trick (it’s thinner at the edges than the middle, a teardrop shape, etc), but for now I’d rather see ultrabooks focus on packing more battery life. Bring on a future where we can compute all day without even thinking about the charger.

Maybe one day when components get small enough it’ll be a reality. A laptop this think 5 years ago would have been pretty hard to produce. I picked a MBP over an Air because the Pros get slightly better battery life, in a laptop that’s my number one requirement too.

Looking forward to the keynote. This year is the first time I’m really going to follow CES news very closely and try to ‘attend’ all live keynotes on The Verge. Who’s covering the Acer keynote? Joanna?

Acer seems to be doing business like HTC. You know – the if-you-can’t-succeed-with-one-model-realease-a-better-one-every-month way.

I sincerely hope they improved the hinge design from the S3.
.. at least aesthetically.

S3 is the second from bottom… fyi.

Wouldn’t the second from the bottom also be the second from the top? :o

Point at the bottom laptop, and proudly declare, “Bottom!”
Now move your finger up one, yelling with gay abandon, “First from bottom!”
Now move your pointing finger up another laptop- squeal, “Second from bottom, yaaaay!”
You are now pointing at the middle ultrabook. :D
I think that’s the system that Kymeira is using.

No one uses ‘first from bottom". It’s bottom, 2nd from bottom, middle, second from top, top.

Other thoughts:
If a device is thin, I need to know that the manufacturer knows what the hell they are doing design-wise.
The thinner a device is, the more important structural integrity becomes. But the thinner a device is, the harder it is to integrify. Don’t judge me… sometimes you just have to innovent words…
Anyways, I would like to see Lenovo and Sony style drop test videos before I would even consider recommending this device. Acer: make me want to like you.

15mm seems impossibly thin, that’s under 2mm thicker than a TouchPad.

The picture captures it all. Random Acer person’s expression seems like he doesn’t really care about what he’s holding.

I’m glad that Thunderbolt is catching on. It can’t hurt that Intel (who created Thunderbolt) is putting so much cash behind the entire Windows Ultrabook endeavour.
I was worried that the port would turn out to be, practically speaking, a zany Apple indulgence limited to a few, way overpriced peripherals, like Firewire.

Would it be cheaper than the Macbook Air? Because if so then it’d be worth getting and Hackintoshing on.
Posted on Jan 08, 2012 | 5:26 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Looks like a solid machine but it’s ugly and and it’s Acer which means I most likely will never ever consider buying it. More competition the better.

This Acer used a Intel Ivy Bridge Proccessor with 8GB of DDR3 RAM and SSDs.

Macbook air is thin enough for me. Is there a point where something is too thin? That it could compromise usability? I don’t know, what do you think?
