Netflix has just launched its subscription streaming service in the UK and Ireland. Anyone can pick up a month's free trial now, which can be extended for £5.99 or €6.99 per month after that. Complete series of TV shows are available to stream immediately, including US content like Prison Break and local UK produce like The Only Way is Essex. That is, of course, in addition to a wide library of movies you can stream. Content variety is still not as broad as Netflix would like it, but the company promises that new material will be continuously added to the available catalog. You'll be able to stream to your smart TV, Blu-ray player, console, Mac, PC, tablet, or smartphone. Netflix has compatible apps for the vast majority of screen-equipped devices.
Thanks, Liam!

Any idea how to get the PS3 app to appear? Or do you just have to wait until your region gets it. Thanks.

just reset your PS3 to ‘default settings’ and it will appear.

Competition can only be a good thing, hopefully this will encourage LOVEFiLM to increase their streaming selection.

Having just signed up for a trial the UK Netflix selection isn’t that great right now either. The website is WAY better than LoveFilm, but neither has 720p yet.
The Xbox app just showed up too.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 3:31 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Its not showing up for me. Hopefully will appear later today! Eager to see what the quality is like on my TV screen rather than PC
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 3:52 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Go into the app tore section and use the Y button to search for it, it didn’t show for me first time either.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 4:03 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Have you tried it on Xbox or PS3? Is it HD there? I hope so, I’m sick of LoveFilm’s dreadful picture quality. I have a 50mbit cable line, I want to use it!
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 4:19 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Nope, just watched Louis CK on the Xbox. Standard def, but the picture is very good. LoveFilm on Xbox has the same quality though, but it’s better than the web stream.

That’s made my decision. I’m going to put it on the Wii instead of the Xbox, the Wii is far, far quieter.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 4:48 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
See other comments… there does seem to be HD stuff.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 7:51 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Unless the catalog is vastly different than the US version, a lot of content is HD and you’ll want to use the xBox. Wii Netflix streaming sucks. I have both…
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 8:52 AM EST via mobile reply Recommend Flag actions
There is an HD section on the Lovefilm UK website, so they definitely have some HD on offer.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:13 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
And by Lovefilm, I of course mean Netflix.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:16 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Really? The reason I was so looking forward to netflix is because I assumed they’d be doing HD from the start. That is a shame.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 4:35 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
wait, I just found the HD section. I’m presuming that’s at least 720p.

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 7:00 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Just tested a HD video on the Xbox. First impressions, not the best. The difference between the SD and HD isn’t marked enough.

Full HD on the PS3!

Been browsing the selection, and I know it’s only launch day, but early impressions are a little tepid. I spent several minutes searching for a variety of stuff, – classics, childhood favourites, foreign, indie, horror, and some recent mainstream stuff. Netflix didn’t have a single title I searched for.
I guess for now it’s going to be more a case of looking at what they have and seeing if anything will suffice, rather than looking for something specific.
I’m sure it will improve, and at least they have HD. Lovefilm, take note.

Selection is pathetic.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:40 AM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Ehh, you are never going to be satisfied with the selection. It’s not Netflixs fault, its the big industry.
£6 a month is cheaper than a film a week.
You are forgetting this is the START of a whole new industry, It’s only going to get better.

Catalog, Vlad? Really? This is a post for the British audience, you could drop some of the Americanism’s sometimes.

also € sign is written after value, not before
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 6:13 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Not always, it depends on the country. In Ireland we would use € before the price.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 6:44 AM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
First impressions are excellent. The streaming selection knocks Lovefilm for 6.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:51 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
You like the selection, every other comment I’ve seen says it sucks or is just too little right now. In the end I think it’s a very subjective thing.
I’m torn because I really like the Blu Ray delivery service I have with LoveFilm, and they seem to have more new titles, but in comparing the older titles I’m leaning more towards Netflix and I’ve just discovered with the help of others above there is HD content on Netflix.
It may come down to money for me in the end, Netflix is cheaper.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 7:10 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I’m not sure that it does. Lovefilm’s streaming selection is awful, but Netflix’s is… even worse. There are a few things in there worth watching, but Lovefilm, dreadful though it is, has the edge.
On PQ Lovefilm is obviously inferior, being modelled as it is on a pirate VHS tape.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 8:03 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Great news -except the selection of content is very poor. Seriously this is the best they can do for a UK launch?
Disappointing.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:57 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
The movie selection is probably not on par with that of Lovefilm but it will improve day by day. The TV show selection however, is excellent, with my shows having their entire catalogue. And just to correct peoples misinformation – the Xbox app streams stuff in 720p if it has a HD icon and your connection can handle it.
There are little signal bars at the top while the stream is playing which fill up depending on your connection speed. Once they’re full, the HD icon lights up and its playing in 720p. It looks glorious and there is a MASSIVE difference to the SD streams. It looks miles better than Lovefilm

They have Top Gear, and a few golden oldies from the BBC… but there’s nothing vaguely recent on there. No Sherlock, for example. No Attenborough.
There’s also little US stuff, for those that care. No Mad Men for example, which I’d personally put at the top of any colonial import list.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 8:10 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Yeah but you’ve gotta remember – this is its UK launch. Its day one. Licensing issues I’m sure are reasons why certain shows are not on there, but this isn’t to say they won’t be added in the future – especially if deals are already worked to show them on the US side.
In terms of recent stuff, I’ve got the respective apps of 4oD and iPlayer for that, which granted don’t always have full seasons but like I mentioned above – theres no reason these things won’t soon make it to Netflix.

For Top Gear you can just watch Dave. ;-)

I see Lovefilm have a new unlimited streaming option for £4.99. I can’t see myself paying for the quality of streams they provide again though (forgot to cancel my free trial).

I’d love to be a fly on the wall at LoveFilm HQ now. They must be in a state of deep panic. For years they treated streaming as a total waste of space and now all of a sudden they’ve had to scramble and pretend that they’ve always valued it.
I hope Netflix will at least force them to go HD soon.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 8:09 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
HD would be great. I say HD, but the HD we’re talking about is pretty much DVD quality, possibly slightly better. Currently the streams are pretty bad; blocks of pixels and all. That’s fine when it’s free, but not when you have to pay.
Lovefilm seems to have an pretty bad selection of streamed films. The recommended ones were B movies at best. While ‘Romeo Must Die’ was a good laugh, it was still pretty dire.

WIll give Netflix a try but I do love my Blu-ray disks from Lovefilm. It is the only proper work out my Sony TV and speakers actually get.
Streams are good for convenience, perfect for TV series, but for major films I’d still want a physical disk that is going to give me 1080.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 8:58 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I may go with both, Lovefilm for discs and Netflix for streaming.

Once you’ve signed up, if you go to the Netflix site using a browser, then to settings, there are 3 x options as to what quality streams you wish to receive. From ‘good’ quality up to ‘HD’. I’m sure it will depend on individual films / shows as to whether or not HD is available, but I’ve been watching Dexter and Prison Break in HD on my Apple TV. Great quality!

I signed up to “Netflix” and so far I am impressed . I new it was an american company but really did not know what to expect from Netflix . The selection of movies could be better but for 6 Quid a month it’s a hell of a lot cheaper then sky movies and I think the Library on Netflix will get bigger in time as there competing with Sky .There is everything from Documentary ,History,Comedy and the picture quality is great I am watching on my mac but it’s time to get Netflix on the TV me thinks .Justed started watching “Heroes” for the first time I am hafe way into Season 1 excellent .
