It's real, people! LG's mythical 55-inch OLED TV was just unveiled here at CES 2012, and honestly, it's even more amazing than the words "55-inch OLED" would lead you to believe. It was making love to our eyes for half the press conference after the sheet was whipped off, and now that we've had a chance to get up close for a better look, we're even more impressed. Honestly, we can't wait to see what Samsung will counter with later on at CES.
LG has been tight-lipped around specs, only telling us that this TV weighs 7.5kg and measures 4mm thick on the side (at its thinnest point, naturally). The front bezel isn't all that much bigger, but besides knowing it can handle 3D (and is compatible with current LG 3D glasses), we've got little else to go on. Resolution can be reasonably presumed to be 1080p, though again, the colors, contrast, and viewing angles were too awesome for us to try and count pixels. The release date and price will be the critical aspects that determine the fate of this television. Its desirability is beyond question.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here. First, think back to 2001 when the first 50 inch plasma panels were introduced… interesting picture quality (not nearly what we have now) and a price tag in the $25k range.. now, a 50 inch plasma goes for anywhere from $549 to $1499 depending on features… LCD panels, even those with full-array back-lighting and local dimming are available for under $3k (Sharp ElitE being the exception to the rule here)… NPD has place the price of this gem (the LG 55 inch OLED) at around $8k.. so unless you drive a Hyundai entry level car, … well, you know the rest.
In short (I know… it’s WAAAYYYY too late for that), let’s not spoil the party with conjecture and pessimism… let’s just welcome the first step in the latest evolution of television with open arms and let the early adopters make us all green with envy…

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 12:16 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Yeah seriously, I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a certain TV anywhere near this bad. This thing sounds awesome.

And no, that is not what she said.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 12:19 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I dunno.
They keep telling us about how this thing is SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER than your dad’s OLED.
And yet no price tag.
Do they have any plans to mass produce it at all?

PenTile or RGB color matrix?
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 12:20 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I believe it is full color per pixel, acutally RGBW, per pixel.
So neither?
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 1:56 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
RGBW is still technically Pentile, if I understand things correctly.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:33 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
No.
There is an RGBW pentile. Just there is a RGB pentile.
Pentile patterns have less than full R,G,B sup-pixels per pixel. Less than 3 subpixels/pixel.
The LG RGBW set has 4 sub pixels (AFAIK) per subpixel.
Pentile RGBW has 2 sub pixels/pixel.

Wouldn’t be funny if they announced that they only had plans to sell this as road-side bill boards?

As soon as commercially realistically price OLED TV’s come out I’m getting one. I saw a demo o one a couple of years back and it was jaw-dropping even when compared to Kuro

Yes. Exactly. But it’s amazing how many people say things like that when they haven’t seen the product in the flesh.

Anything upto £3,300 (around $5,000) and I’ll buy this!
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 1:04 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
yes, BUT is the ENTIRE TV 4mm or just the screen? the second to last picture tells me otherwise.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 1:34 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
They said at the thinnest point, which probably just means the edges. The actually mounting area is probably thicker to make sure that it doesn’t break on the wall if a force is applied to it.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:34 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
That contrast is making me hard.

Big questions are:
When?
How much?
Panel Life?
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 1:56 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
That is just unreal, the color reproduction on that thing is just that, unreal. The last time I saw picture in a TV/monitor of any kind this good was probably in that 11" OLED TV from Sony a few years ago but its something else to see it in this size.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 2:03 PM EST via mobile reply Recommend Flag actions
Unless you are actually there you know you are looking at these pictures on your monitor right? ;P
But yeah, I know what you mean, I can’t wait for OLED to become affordable and replace LCDs and their poor black levels and viewing angles.

Price please.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 3:13 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Maybe they’re holding off on the price for a reason, guys! My guess is somewhere around $10,000.
I think I’ll buy it for my first house…. Considering I’m still in grad school, that could be a while.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 3:38 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
My guess is neither Samsung nor LG wants to list a price first and then be undercut by the other.

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 3:56 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
Yes, this is EXACTLY what I want. I don’t really care about 3D, 4K, 240hz, I want deep blacks, bright whites and wide viewing angles!
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 4:29 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
I don’t care about 3D, but 4k and 240Hz would be sexy.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 5:36 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
OLED would own the crap out of 240Hz LCDs anyway.

What is wrong with all the videos here. I just keep seeing the Ford Ad and then nothing happens. I have clicked on 3 different CES videos and thanks to this, I have seen the same Ford Ad 3 times, with no actual video following that. I have tried this on a Chrome and Firefox browser with no difference. Am I missing something or are the servers just so overwhelmed right now that no videos are playable.
