Ballmer just said it live on stage at CES. Yelling it, no less. Short and sweet. Kinect for Windows will be official on February 1st. It's not so much a surprise — the SDK beta hit version 2.0 back in November with Windows 8 support. A pre-order page just went live on Amazon for $249.99 (thanks, Jake Smith!), and here's the gist: it includes the Commercial SDK, it has a "near mode" for use up close — a new firmware where the depth camera can see objects as close as 50cm away "without losing accuracy or precision."
Likely related, but somewhat peculiar, it specifically says on the box "PC Optimized — not for use with Xbox 360." We'll let that one sink in for a moment. No indication if you can just go ahead and use it, anyway, and we're very interested in finding out for ourselves. Of course, the original Kinect works just fine on PCs, including the SDK beta.
The MSDN blog elaborates further: "non-commercial deployments using Kinect for Xbox 360 that were allowed using the beta SDK are not permitted with the newly released software." In other words, to use the new and official SDK, you have to test it with the new Kinect for Windows hardware. There is a silver lining, though: the beta license has been extended three more years to June 16, 2016 — and those non-commercial deployments will still be compatible with Kinect for Xbox 360.
At any rate, the message is clear: you, too, will be waving your hands wildly and screaming at your Microsoft PC. Yes, yes, just like Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

Almost certainly NOT the same HW. Different lenses on the sensor and illuminator, and no motorized base.

MSDN confirmed it is the same hardware, and the only difference is firmware…
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:11 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Well, if they did that, well, that was really dumb. They could have removed the motor (you don’t need for the desktop) and then they could have powered it parasitically from USB (since the motor is what put it over the limit for USB (so I am told), and not had to have a separate power cord.
Saving them a bunch of $$$ on the cost of the unit.

It is said in the MSDN blogpost that the current Kinect for 360 price is subsidized. The Kinect for Windows will include commercial licences, so you don’t need to pay for the SDK and you can sell your solution using this Kinect for Windows without breaking the MS’ license. CMIIW

Why is it $100 more? I suspect the Xbox Kinect is a loss leader that makes up for it with game sales?
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:06 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
Nope, Microsoft actually turns a profit with the Kinect… Manufacturing costs are estimated at $56, and is made by PrimeSense (They developed the technology, while Microsoft just licenses and bought out the rights to use it as a game controller) (source: http://www.geek.com/articles/games/kinect-components-only-cost-56-20101112/)
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:12 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
At $56 they break even or loose a little, but don’t make any money @ $119 (w/ bundled game). On top of that $56 you need to add packaging, shipping, licensing fees and the distributor/retailer markup.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:19 PM EST reply Recommend (2) Flag actions
Not to mention they need to make money above the marginal cost to pay back the R&D, and let’s not forget support costs. There may be additional costs for the exclusive license to Prime Sense as well.
The “commercial” version for Windows will likely be lower volume (at least at first, and perhaps always), came with additional R&D, probably comes with additional (more expensive) support for Windows developers, etc.
If this really takes off with the introduction of Windows 8 and volumes go up, then costs will come down, as they always do. If it becomes popular enough, I would expect to see a “non-commercial” version for PC for $99 or less by sometime next year.

Kinect could be the “killer app” that Microsoft needs to make the transition to Windows 8 Metro a success. No one else has anything like it. If they could figure out a way to incorporate this into Windows Phone, that could be the launching point to start gobbling up marketshare again.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 10:51 PM EST reply Recommend (1) Flag actions
No one else has anything like it because no one knows quite what to do with it (other than games, obviously). Including Microsoft. Which is why it’s been great that they’ve let people tinker around with it and try to figure stuff out, because it would be languishing otherwise. I think if Microsoft had a plan of how the Kinect fit in with Windows 8, we’d have some hint about that.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:04 PM EST reply Recommend (4) Flag actions
This.
Nobody has really figured out a usage scenario, outside of the gaming market. Not saying that they won’t find one, but as of yet, I doubt everybody will be running out to get this for their laptop or desktop.
Maybe MS needs to think a bit broader, maybe for medical purposes, hospitals and physical therapy facilities.

So… It’s $250.
Unless it has a new HD camera system, I don’t see why it should cost that much. It can see objects closer to it, but that’s new firmware…
Buys Xbox 360 version instead for $99 on sale, knows the hacking community will try to give it the new firmware if Microsoft refuses

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 10:57 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
It’s pretty stupid really. What they needed to do was have a single model that works with both the XBox and PC (and even be connected to both at the same time without issue).
I mean, I’ve got a PC in the living room right next to the Xbox. Do they expect me to have two different sensors, one optimized for PC and then the original?

It’s written, on the box, FOR COMMERCIAL USE. Just use your regular XBOX360 Kinect sensor and hook it to your PC. Nobody expect you to build your own Kinect apps for PC. :P

Very weak and unimpressive press conferences from the big dogs this year…
It seems as if there’s no innovation left in the tank. I think the industry is just waiting for Apple to come up with the next best thing and then capitalize on it.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:19 PM EST via mobile reply Recommend Flag actions
You mean like connected TV’s? Microsoft has been in the space for years and the competition is just now putting their muscle behind it. Microsoft has a lot going on this year, who cares if the CES keynote wasm’t that great. They rarely ever are.
Posted on Jan 09, 2012 | 11:24 PM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
i agree wixostrix’s CES are pretty dry, if this was the only one you saw then you would think MS did a bad job but watch the Samsung or Sony they are just painful. This in comparison was not horrible, bad but not totally horrible.
Now to that other comment about Apple. Do you know they just submitted for Kinect like patents and they will not pass cause MS is so far ahead in 3D gesture technology it’s not even funny (meaning MS has dozens of patents for 3D gestures already approved).
Innovation in TV? if using the XBox Kinect and seeing the first truly immerse TV show is not innovation then i don’t know what is. Even if Siri came out for the TV so what you can talk to your TV. I can do that TODAY i can also use 3D gestures that are so easy that my 3 year old daughter already knows how to use Kinect. Based on the patent request we know Apple has nothing close to Kinect level technology in the pipeline.
Also PC Gaming has just gone to a whole new level with Kinect for the PC, i would call that innovation.
Microsoft has some of the coolest innovations in the computing world, they just don’t always get credit for it cause they can suck at communicating the message to the masses Corporations they have that nailed down.

My thoughts on how the kinect became successful.
1-the commercials tell you everything it does plain and simple something microsoft cant do with most of their products.
2-it was completely different and original.
3-the thing markets itself just go to a bestbuy and watch people play it.
4-you feel like your in the minority report movie and have the ability to see the matrix

Shouldn’t this have been made “smaller” or at least a little more unique? It looks like you could easily confuse this with the Xbox Kinect and where the hell am I going to mount this? The base is larger than my LED monitor, so can’t sit it on top. There’s no clip, so can’t clippy. Could set it on the desk but shouldn’t it be leveled to your head?

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 | 12:57 AM EST reply Recommend Flag actions
If the standard Kinect works on PC then the only thing this has going for it is the near mode, which can be done with a £20 add on which just refocuses the current lenses, sure it may not focos it as close as 50cm but how long do you think it will take before someone makes a newer version of the add on designed for desktops??
