Chronology of the Greatest RPGs
Mission Statement
The purpose of this post is to create a chronology of the greatest and most influential Role Playing (video) Games. My vision is that eventually this piece will showcase branching paths, tracing the evolution of the RPG over the past twenty or so years. The inception for this was my desire to play through the greatest RPGs of all time. By creating a chronology, it is my hope that we can trace the evolution of the genre and discern the greatest games and discover their influences.
Format
I've created a preliminary chronology that is by no means exhaustive or final. It's purpose is to spark discussion. I welcome disagreements and fully embrace the notion of editing it as the discussion ensues. There is no limit of one game per year. There does not have to be a game every year. Games should be considered on the following criteria: their influence, critical reception, their heritage, and their enduring playability. These criteria are open for discussion and revision, as well.
