Anyone else think the Acer W700 tablet is a terrific deal? (Intel Core i3, 1080p display for $799)
While all the attention and hype is around Surface, I think there are some other interesting Windows 8 devices that are being overlooked. Case in point: the Acer W700 – for $799, you get a gorgeous aluminum unibody tablet running full Windows 8 with Intel Core i3 CPU, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB SSD, and most importantly a Full HD 1920x1080 screen at 11.6". Also there's keyboard and (admittedly clumsy) dock bundled with it. For $999 you get a faster Core i5 and 128 GB of storage.
Now, you might associate all sorts of (bad) things with Acer, but most people who tried the W700 say it's very well built, apart from the plastic dock – see AnandTech, again AnandTech, PocketNow, Laptop Magazine for somewhat useful hands-ons. I do have some doubts because I think the price is just too low – since it's basically ultrabook-specs in tablet form – but if I can't stand the Surface RT screen, I'll definitely get the W700 for only 120 € more (Surface with Touch Cover is 579 € in Germany, W700 699 €).
The biggest disadvantage I see is that you can't actually use it laptop-style, i.e. on your lap, but if you're okay with only using it as a tablet while on the go (you can still take the dock and keyboard with you for trips etc.) I think it's a ridiculously great deal.
