Late 2008 15" 2.4GHz MacBook Pro vs. 2012 11" 1.7GHz MacBook Air - Performance? (Actually thinking about the Samsung Smart PC Pro 700T)
I'm actually thinking about switching from my late 2008 15" MBP (base model: C2D 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, upped with an SSD in OptiBay) to a Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T (11.6", detachable keyboard, Windows 8 touchscreen device). Since the SmartPC Pro isn't out yet, I can't ask for performance reviews on that one. But the 11" MBA has the exact same 1,7GHz Core i5 processor as the top-level Smart PC Pro has, so I was wondering if anyone here can tell me about the performance differences.
I'd like to use the device for multitrack audio recording, and maybe some casual video cutting, so it might as well be faster than my current MBP. But should I be worried about performance with those ultra-mobile processors?
Now, I know I would be trading in the MBP's overall build quality, its Firewire port, its SATA drive bays, its illuminated keyboard and its ethernet jack for a higher-res touchscreen and more portability (and better battery life), and it still comes at a price, so it might as well feel like a newer machine.
I also know that it's not only the processor that makes the difference - but I guess the SSDs will be pretty much on par with one another, and the rest... well, for now, the comparison is as scientific as it can be.
Any thoughts on gaming performance would also be nice - how well will the HD 4000 compare to the nVidia 9600M-GT? But I still have my desktop machine (i5 2500K, nVidia GTX560Ti) for those things...
Thanks in advance for your replies, and happy Windows 8 launch :P
