Why would they put displayport on the Surface Pro?

I know Displayport can achieve higher maximum resolutions than HDMI can, but I believe it's limited by the HD 4000 to 2560x1600, which HDMI can achieve. I've read that Diaplayport is better to use with external monitors as opposed to HDMI which is typically geared more for T.V.
