Why I no longer want an iPad Mini. Silly, silly Apple.
So, as you all know the iPad Mini was just announced the other day. It was looking nice, I wanted one in the Slate colour and was so looking forward to getting it (to compliment my iPhone). After a few things I've seen tonight, I no longer want it.
1) Tim Cook's incredibly ridiculous quote of the week.
"Let me be clear. We would not make one of the seven-inch tablets. We don't think they're good products, and we would never make one. Not just because it's seven inches but for many reasons. One of the reasons, however, is size."
This is absolutely absurd, I'm sorry. The fact he implies that 7.9 inches is now perfect, sounds just as dumb as them once saying "3.5 inches is perfect" and now "Oh, actually, we realised 4" is perfect!"
2) Steve Jobs on 7" tablets
A 7" screen is only 45% as large as the iPad's 10" screens... The screens of the 7" tablets are a bit smaller than the bottom half the iPads display. This size isn't sufficient to create great tablet apps in our opinion... The 10" screen size is the minimum to create a great tablet app"
Every tablet user is also a smartphone user. No tablet can compete with the mobility of a smartphone, it's ease of fitting into your pocket or purse. Too big to compete with the smartphone, and too small to compete with an iPhone."
The full video is here. I'm sticking with Steve on this one. I wanted the smaller one, but even posthumously ,Steve Jobs is making me realise how idiotic it is.
3) The crappy screen
Here is a size comparison of the resolutions.
Considering iPad Mini is by far the most expensive, the biggest and is coming from Apple, you'd expect it to atleast beat the competition. It's simply not good enough. I would have paid more for a Retina screen, but screw Apple. I'm seeing this iPad as a cheap entry into the iOS ecosystem. The gateway drug. It's not the mini tablet we deserved.
What do you think? Do you want an iPad Mini still, or are you sticking with Steve?
Also - why didn't the iPad 4 come in slate :'(.
