Indiscreet - Mac Mini
I have been waiting for the Mac Mini update and I was hoping for a discrete graphics option, but no! So, now I have to weight my options because my black Macbook3,1, after many upgrades, has become unbearable. In fact, I have never been very happy with the performance of the GMA X3100 integrated graphics, it slows down the whole machine and now, I don't want to make the same mistake again.
Actually, I don't run graphic intensive applications everyday, but when I do I want them to work reasonably. I want to be able to transcode and edit video occasionally, but I don't need to be able to run the most intensive games at the best possible frame rates. I do, however, want to be able to power large displays.
So, here is my question. How is the HD Graphics 4000? I hear it is much improved, Is it good enough to keep me happy for four or five years?
It seems Apple has indiscreetly dropped the discrete graphics option in order to up sell customers to the iMac. This is my problem, I want to be able to upgrade my display indepenantly of my computer, but I don't want to sacrifice performance at the same time.
What do you all think, will the 2.3GHz Mac Mini with 16GB of RAM and an SSD feel too slow too soon? Do I really need to go up to an iMac?
Also, What's the deal with user upgradable RAM on the 21 inch iMac? The 27 inch specs specifically mention user upgradeable RAM, but not the 21 inch.
