On a desktop, why wouldn't your start screen look like this?

We see a lot of nice colorful start menus, but I can't get around why you would have "metro" applications on a computer without a touchscreen. All the "metro" apps take forever to load and have pretty bare UI's on large screens. For me the start menu is a glorified launchpad, but it looks ugly as sin really.
