Help me understand the Nexus brand

Let me start by clarifying I understand Google is trying to create a brand for their Android devices, but the new Nexus devices are really confusing. They have two different branding philosophies for their Nexus phones and tablets. The Nexus 4 by LG represents the 4th generation of their Nexus phone, while the Nexus 7 and 10 is branded by their screen size. It's confusing, and it'll be more confusing once Google gets up to the 7th generation Nexus phone.

So anyone have any idea what Google is doing? Or how you would do things differently. Personally I'd call their tablets the Nexus Tab 7 and Nexus Tab 10 while the phones go in numerical order as Nexus [insert generation number]. Or something along those lines so consumers could better understand the difference between the two lines.
