Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson announced on Friday that a "completely new" game in the series has begun development, but details beyond that were extremely thin. Now, Yanick Roy, studio director for BioWare Montreal, has revealed that the lead duties for the series have been passed from BioWare Edmonton to the team in Montreal, and that Hudson will remain on board as the executive producer. Additionally, Roy stated that the new Mass Effect game will utilize the Frostbite game engine — the same one found in Battlefield 3 — while also borrowing some technology that is currently being used by the Dragon Age III development team.
In regards to how the new entry will compare to the rest of the series, Roy explained that "it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling." Roy warns that it will probably be quite some time before the company makes any more announcements about the game, so details about a possible launch window, story specifics, or even what platforms it will be released on will unfortunately be left unanswered for the time being.
