Alongside its newly rebranded Here mapping platform, Nokia announced at an event in San Francisco today that it has acquired 3D street level imagery firm earthmine. Known for its 3D imagery of cities, earthmine has provided 3D map solutions since 2006. Nokia is now planning to incorporate the technology into its Here maps system to provide a competitive service against Google's popular Street View service.

Nokia is holding an event today to highlight its future maps plans, but the company isn't detailing exactly how it plans to use earthmine's technology going forwards. It's safe to assume that Windows Phone and Bing Maps will benefit from earthmine at some point in the near future.
