Sony has announced that 70 million PlayStation 3 consoles have been sold worldwide. That more or less exactly matches the figure set by Microsoft's Xbox 360, which the company revealed to have hit the 70 million milestone in its Q1 2013 financial report last month. It's quite the achievement for Sony to be in the race at this point; after Microsoft's one-year head start, the PS3 launch in 2006 was widely considered a disappointment thanks to a high sticker price, lack of quality games, and mediocre online service. Sony has certainly turned things around since, but it'll be hoping for lightning to strike twice with its PlayStation Vita — sales figures out of Japan this week were the worst yet for the handheld, with the Nintendo 3DS outselling it 47-to-1.
