What is this "android" you speak of?

So to make a long story short I have been and iPhone user for years now and am currently using an iPhone 5 on Verizon. I love it and have no major complaints with iOS after my years of heavy day to day use. But recently (with the release of the nexus 4 and jelly bean 4.2) I have started to become more and more intrigued by Android as I have never owned a Google device before. As someone who is on Verizon and looking to mess around with the STOCK Android experience, would the purchase of a Galaxy Nexus be something you android junkies would recommend? Like I mentioned above I want the stock android experience (none of that touch wiz or Motoblur nonsense) and want the phone to be on Verizon (so I can just swap the sim out of my existing iPhone) which is why I'm not considering the obvious choice of the Nexus 4. I'm not looking for the phone to replace my iPhone 5 but rather be something I could use for a month or two just to experience android first hand. So I guess really what I'm asking is, is it to late to pick up a Gnex? Will i be disappointed in the device's performance? and/or should I scrap that idea all together and just get a Nexus 4 when there back in stock and use it as a glorified iPod touch?
