Nexus 10 vs iPad 4 for reading academic papers and PDF books

I am looking into getting the Nexus 10 (or iPad 4) for the primary purpose of reading, as the title says, academic papers and PDF tech/math books (like this one: http://www.math.cornell.edu/~hatcher/AT/ATpage.html).

A lot of my friends use the iPad for a similar reason, but I've noticed that academic papers/PDF books generally tend to not fit the iPad's screen since they are skinny, leaving empty space on either side of the page, when viewing a whole page on the screen (thus greatly reducing the area of text on the tablet).

I was wondering: Do any of you have experience reading PDFs on a 16:10 tablet (in particular, is there empty space next to the papers margins, between the paper and the edge of the screen)? How does it compare to the iPad? Do the Android PDF-reading apps compare to iOS's?

Thanks!
