VLC Player for Windows 8 Kickstarter Project

Look, I normally hate funding Kickstarter projects.

My view is that most of the compelling ones could get otherwise funded, but they don't want to give up any equity in the project. So what they do is ride a wave of naivete and get tech enthusiasts to take all the risks of funding product development, but without getting to participate in any of the success. So basically you assume all of the potential downside, without getting to realize any of the upside. Best case, you get what you pay for.

VLC is different. Anyone who does even a moderate amount of media watching on their computer has had to turn to the VLC player at some point to decode video in some wonky codec. And they've always been able to do so without paying a penny. Basically, we're all in their debt to some small degree.

So now they've launched a Kickstarter project to fund design and development of a Windows 8 app. Some of that cost will go towards enabling the developers to work on the project full time, but it will also fund the hiring of a professional designer to make the app beautiful and "Metro-fied."

If you're using Windows 8 and/or are planning to do so in the future, especially on some sort of tablet device, it would be great if you could throw these guys a couple of bucks to move this project along. I feel like the team has built up a lot of "good guy" equity, and if you can afford it then it would be nice to help them along.
