Safari problems

My laptop dies few days ago and now a borrowed ipad2 is my main computer. Not really ideal, but I'll manage. There is one area that I'd like to resolve though: safari.
For example I can not make a permanent login to theverge using openid. Every time i come to visit I'm logged out.
Also, when I open new tabs (in the background, which is an awesome feature), most of the time safari will not start loading them until i switch over to those tabs.
I can't find a solution in the settings. Help?
