Would things be different if Surface Pro came out before Surface RT?

In Microsoft's craze to finally come up with the "answer to the iPad", they made Windows 8 run on ARM, designed their own hardware, and came out with Surface RT just in time for the holidays...

Then the reviews came out with the impression that this thing that was like Windows but limited, and like an iPad but with hardly any apps...

Don't get me wrong Surface RT is a really nice product.... It's got a great build and some cool features. If someone gave me one I'd certainly get some use out of it. However I'd never buy one. Why? because I want something high res. I want something with a stylus. I want something to run all my existing windows applications. I want something to replace the laptop I'm using right now. I'm a power user and WANT IT ALL. In other words I want a Surface Pro...

I'm sure many feel exactly like me. However in their effort to compete against the iPad Microsoft missed a chance to appeal to their existing user base. They could have focused on Intel/IvyBridge early and given developers a chance to build up Windows 8 app store before introducing a thinner lighter ARM based Surface RT next year.

To be fair, the entire industry was pressuring Microsoft to come up with the "answer to the iPad", but to ignore their huge base while going after iPad customers is kind of bass ackwards....
