The Sony Xperia U is really the best budget smartphone on the market. With a decent dual core processor and (now) Ice Cream Sandwich, this phone can be used for a quite heavy daily usage, thanks also to the long lasting battery.
I never had many problems of lag, and I could use it as if it was and android flagship: taking photos with a quite good camera, receiving calls and using gMaps or the google navigator.
My only complaint is with RAM: with only 512mb the multitasking experience is frustrating.
Now that there is a decent port of CyanogenMod 9, I'd recommend it to everyone (from my sister to a geek friend) who is looking for a budget phone -out of contract, of course.
